Chapter 4 - 4: UNEXPECTED TURN

Amara sat outside the house, along with her mother. The cold setting in, her brother all curled up in his mother's embrace shivering from time to time.

" Mama, it's late let's go in father would come back don't worry. " Amara tried convincing her mother for the upteenth time, who only gave a soft hum in reply. She hated this one thing about her mother despite the way he hits her, she still cared greatly for him.

She was very sure, he was somewhere drinking and wasting away his life, while her mother sat outside here worrying for him. It was all her father ever did , waste his Life.

If there was one thing she was sure about, it was that the creditors never killed those who owed them money.

How else would they collect the debt owed?

These was another reason she wasn't worried, unlike her mother.

Yet the image of that noble man kept replaying in her head , he was anything but good and she wondered what exactly his motive was.

From the corner of her eyes, Amara caught the neighbors peeking to see if they were still sat outside.

" Yes, they are still outside, don't go out. Just stay in doors, you don't want to pick bad luck on your way out" she overheard the woman whispering to the others.

Amara had good hearing than an average human should have, she has heard all sorts of bad things being said about her family and she had grown numb to it.

The moon sat high up in the dark sky, with no stars in sight. Cold breeze blew past the now quiet and shabby town, by now everyone has and was already returning home. Nobody wanted to fall prey to theives and other bad lurking about.

Amara's mother sat in the cold staring off in to space, her brother jay was soundly sleeping still despite the cold.

Oblivious of the pair of eyes, watching them from the top of a roof somewhere closeby. Amara's eyes still however drifted towards that very direction.

She saw a small fraction of a shadow before it completely disappeared. Her brows squinted in worry, what she didn't know however was how that small reaction she gave had just changed her whole fate.

" Mama, we need to go in. Father won't come back tonight " Amara this time around stopped at nothing till she finally got her mother to go inside.

The stubborn woman finally got in, and Amara bolted the door without thinking twice. Her hands shaking, not from worry for her father but worry of whatever it was she had seen earlier.

She secretly prayed in her mind for nothing bad to happen, They had it tough already.

That night, she couldn't sleep well. Nightmares like she'd never had before had kept hunting her.

And somehow it always ended with her brother puking all over her feet. It was something strange and disturbing.

Waking up from time to time, to see if her brother was actually okay Amara found her mother still awake, face weary from lack of sleep and excessive worrying.

"Mama, you need to sleep too. Your health is bad. Father is fine don't worry about him " she caressed the older woman's face, and her mother just watched her with teary eyes.

She honestly wondered how she had given birth to a child that could comprehend and fully grasp complicated moments like this.

She gently placed her hands on her daughters head, patting it lightly.

" I'm alright, Amara. You go sleep you need it the most " She lovingly smiled despite all the thoughts weighing her down....

At the crack of dawn, the loud crowing of the cocks woke the whole village , everyone began going about their work.

Amara , jumped up from the spot where she had fallen asleep last night. Looking around for her mother, she opened the door to see the poor woman seated outside again waiting for her husband.

But Kasa didn't show up until dusk. For the first time, walking upright and with a smirk on his face. Everyone who saw him wondered what could have happened, just yesterday he was dragged away like a prisoner but today he was walking like someone who won the lottery.

Kasa was known to be someone who was never in a good mood, especially since he lost his job.

Coming home drunk to pour his frustration on his small family, that was the usual routine everyone knew .

His smirk made everyone wonder, and as he got home to his small family he barged in without warning.

Everyone had been expecting him, but not in the state they saw him today. Sitting majestically, whistling and humming a song he finally faced his wife.

She flinched, but still opened up to speak obviously worried for him.

" Kasa, where have you been? What happened? Why did...." Before she could finish talking, he dipped his hands into his pocket and brought out a heavy pouch.

It jinggled, as he opened it up without saying a word.

Amara and her mother shared a look before she gently peeked to see what was in the pouch.

A small gasp left the woman's mouth, her worry increased as she glanced up to meet her husband's eyes.

" Kasa where..." Again he raised his hands, stopping her from saying more before he brought out another pouch.

Again his wife gasp fearfully, her shaky self running to bolt the door before coming to face him again.

" Kasa! " She dared to raise her voice this time, the fire in it slowly reigniting.

" Tell me, did you steal from the nobleman ? " She threw the question immediately...
