Chapter 3 - Ch 3: A Groomsman’s Prank

The garden was alive with music and laughter as guests mingled under the soft glow of string lights. John stood near the gazebo where the ceremony was about to take place, adjusting the cuffs of his tuxedo. He looked every bit the part of a groomsman, exuding calm confidence despite the whirlwind of activity around him.

Aaron, the groom, was pacing nervously a few feet away, glancing periodically at the entrance where the bride would soon appear. His other groomsmen—a lively group of their high school buddies—stood nearby, sharing laughs and cracking jokes to lighten the mood.

"John," Aaron called, walking over to him. "Glad you're here, man. It wouldn't feel right without you."

"Wouldn't miss it," John replied, his deep voice steady and reassuring. He clapped a hand on Aaron's shoulder. "You've got this. Deep breaths."

Aaron managed a weak smile. "Yeah, easy for you to say. You're not the one about to commit your entire life in front of everyone you know."

"That's true," John teased. "But if it helps, you've got a solid team backing you up today. Right, guys?"

The other groomsmen cheered in agreement, their camaraderie evident. There was Kevin, the self-proclaimed comedian of the group; Nathan, the quiet but sharp observer; Marcus, the energetic hype man; Blake, the smooth talker who could charm anyone; and Peter, the reliable planner. Together, they were a force of mischief and banter.

As the ceremony time approached, the group huddled together, their matching tuxedos making them look like a squad ready for a covert operation.

"So," Kevin said, lowering his voice conspiratorially. "I was thinking... what if we added a little excitement to the ceremony?"

Aaron raised an eyebrow. "Define 'excitement.'"

Kevin grinned wickedly. "When the officiant asks for the rings, we pretend we lost them. Just for a second—long enough to get everyone's heart racing."

John smirked, his deep gray eyes glinting with amusement. "You're playing with fire, Kev. But I like it."

Aaron groaned. "You guys are unbelievable. This is my wedding! What if Amy—"

"She'll laugh," Marcus cut in confidently. "Amy loves a good joke. Besides, we'll make it quick. Nothing crazy."

Aaron sighed but couldn't hide the faint smile tugging at his lips. "Fine. But if this backfires, I'm blaming all of you."

The group exchanged excited glances, the plan cemented.

The Ceremony

As the music shifted to the familiar chords of Canon in D, the guests fell silent, turning their attention to the bride making her entrance. Amy, radiant in her flowing white gown, glided down the aisle, her smile lighting up the garden. Aaron's face softened, all his nerves melting away as he watched her approach.

The ceremony unfolded beautifully, the vows heartfelt and touching. The officiant, a jovial older man, guided them through the proceedings with warmth and humor.

Finally, the moment arrived.

"And now," the officiant said with a smile, "may I have the rings, please?"

All eyes turned to the groomsmen. John, standing second in line, reached into his pocket and froze, a look of mock panic crossing his face. Kevin followed suit, patting his jacket frantically.

"Uh, I thought you had them!" Kevin whispered loudly to Blake.

"No, I gave them to Nathan!" Blake shot back, clearly playing along.

Nathan shook his head solemnly. "Don't look at me. I handed them to Marcus."

Marcus shrugged dramatically, his expression pure innocence. "I thought Peter was supposed to bring them!"

The murmurs from the guests grew louder as Aaron's jaw dropped, his eyes darting between his friends. Amy, standing beside him, raised an eyebrow, a mix of curiosity and amusement on her face.

Peter, playing his part to perfection, threw up his hands. "Okay, everyone stay calm. We can fix this."

Aaron turned to John, his voice low but audible. "Seriously, guys? Now?"

John bit his lip to suppress a grin. "Relax. We'll find them. Probably."

Just as the tension reached its peak, Kevin broke into laughter, pulling the ring box from his pocket with a flourish.

"Gotcha!" he announced, holding it up triumphantly.

The garden erupted in laughter, the guests clearly relieved. Aaron groaned, shaking his head, while Amy laughed along with everyone else, her hand gently squeezing Aaron's in reassurance.

"You're lucky she has a sense of humor," Aaron muttered, but his smile betrayed his amusement.

As the ceremony continued, the prank became an instant highlight, a story that would undoubtedly be retold for years. And as John handed the rings to Aaron and Amy, he couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. High school bonds might evolve over time, but some things—like the joy of a perfectly executed prank—never changed.
