Chapter 16 - Gambit billionaire

The room was illuminated by soft, golden light streaming from the towering windows, offering a breathtaking view of the celestial city below. Lucan Kane's private office on Titanis Prime, the crown jewel of his corporate empire, was nothing short of a palace. The walls were lined with shimmering alloys, holographic art, and priceless relics from across the galaxy—each a testament to his power and influence.

Kael stood in the middle of it all, her gaze shifting between the opulence surrounding her and the enigmatic man seated behind an obsidian desk. Lucan's sharp features were framed by the glow of the holographic schematics projected in front of him—a detailed map of the Abyss Rift, the uncharted zone where the Key's final secrets lay buried.

"I assume you've reconsidered my offer," Lucan said, his voice smooth and controlled, but carrying an edge that hinted at his impatience.

Kael crossed her arms. "Your offer? You mean handing over the Key so you can play god? Not happening."

Lucan chuckled softly, leaning back in his chair. "You think I'm the villain here, Kael. But you don't understand the stakes. This galaxy is falling apart—wars, corruption, decay. The Key can change all of that. With its power, I can create order. Unity."

"You mean control," Kael shot back. "You're not looking to save anyone. You're looking to rule."

For a moment, silence hung between them. Lucan's eyes narrowed, and he rose from his chair, stepping around the desk to face her directly. He towered over her, his presence both commanding and unnerving.

"Do you really think you're capable of keeping it safe?" he asked, his voice dropping to a near-whisper. "The Eclipse is closing in. The Syndicate wants it for themselves. And you—just a scavenger from the Outer Rim—believe you can protect the most powerful artifact in existence?

Kael's jaw tightened. "I don't just believe it. I know it. Because I'm not in this for myself.

Lucan smirked. "That's what makes you weak, Kael. You're too sentimental. But you'll learn soon enough that sentiment doesn't win wars."

Before Kael could respond, the doors to the office hissed open, and a figure stepped in—a woman dressed in sleek, combat-ready attire with piercing green eyes that glimmered like gemstones.

Kael stiffened. "Vera?"

Her former ally smiled coldly. "Surprised to see me, Kael?

Lucan interjected smoothly. "You see, I understand loyalty. I offered Vera a better deal—freedom from the constant running, endless resources, and a place at my side. She's quite... persuasive."

Kael's heart sank as she realized the weight of the betrayal. Vera had been with her through countless scrapes, always reliable, always there. And now, she was standing beside the man who represented everything Kael despised.

"You sold us out," Kael said, her voice laced with disbelief and anger.

Vera's expression hardened. "I made a choice, Kael. The Key is bigger than you or me. If Lucan can unlock its true potential, maybe this galaxy has a chance."

Kael clenched her fists. "And you trust him? After everything we've seen? He's just another power-hungry tyrant."

Vera didn't answer, but the flicker of doubt in her eyes didn't go unnoticed.

Lucan clapped his hands together, breaking the tension. "Now that we've established the new dynamic, let's discuss terms."

Kael raised an eyebrow. "Terms?"

"You'll join me," Lucan said. "Willingly. Together, we can finish what your father started. I'll even let you keep your crew alive. Or…" He gestured toward a holographic feed showing Kael's ship surrounded by Lucan's fleet. "...I can end this charade now."

Kael's mind raced. She knew Lucan wasn't bluffing. But she also knew he didn't fully understand the Key's power—or the dangers of using it.

Taking a step forward, she forced a smirk. "You talk a big game, Lucan. But if you really had everything under control, you wouldn't need me. What's wrong? Afraid the Key won't cooperate without me?"

Lucan's eyes darkened. "Careful, Kael. You're playing a dangerous game.

Kael shrugged. "So are you."

In that moment, the Key—secured in a containment field behind Lucan—began to glow faintly. Its pulsing energy filled the room with an eerie hum, and Kael felt a familiar pull deep in her chest.

"What's happening?" Lucan demanded, turning toward the artifact.

Kael seized the opportunity. With a subtle flick of her wrist, she activated a concealed device on her belt—a small EMP generator she'd swiped from Lucan's own security team. The pulse disrupted the containment field, and the Key shot toward her like a magnet, embedding itself in her palm.

Lucan's face twisted with rage. "Stop her!"

Vera hesitated for a fraction of a second, and it was all Kael needed. Using the Key's power, she unleashed a blinding burst of energy that sent Lucan and his guards sprawling.

"You're making a mistake, Kael!" Lucan roared as she bolted for the door.

"Wouldn't be the first time," she called back, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins.

As she ran through the labyrinthine corridors of Lucan's palace, alarms blared, and armed guards closed in from every direction. But the Key seemed to guide her, its energy showing her hidden pathways and shortcuts she couldn't have known existed.

By the time she reached the hangar, her crew—led by Marcus—had fought their way in, commandeering one of Lucan's state-of-the-art ships.

"Cutting it close, aren't you?" Marcus shouted as Kael leaped aboard.

"Always," she replied with a grin, clutching the Key tightly as the ship roared to life.

As they escaped into hyperspace, Kael allowed herself a moment to breathe. But her relief was short-lived. The Key began to pulse more intensely, and a chilling voice echoed in her mind—a voice she didn't recognize but instinctively feared.

"You cannot outrun destiny, Kael Darrow. The Abyss awaits.

Her eyes widened as a vision flashed before her: Lucan standing at the edge of the Abyss, wielding a power far greater than anything she'd imagined.

For the first time, Kael wondered if she was truly prepared for the battle ahead—or if she was merely a pawn a game far beyond her control.
