Chapter 17 - Chapter 16: Shadows in the Storm

The city's neon lights flickered against the rain-drenched streets as the group moved through the crowded district. The hum of engines, chatter of pedestrians, and rhythmic patter of rain filled the air. Ryo adjusted the hood of his jacket, glancing over his shoulder.

"Do you think they'll follow us?" Kenji asked, clutching his trusty frying pan like a sacred weapon.

"They'll try," Rei said, scanning the crowd. "But after that beating, it'll take them some time to recover."

Sora tugged at their oversized coat, their bag clinking with tools and gadgets. "Let's just hope we're faster. My workshop may be trashed, but I've still got a few tricks up my sleeve."

Akira, walking at the front of the group, paused to check a map on their phone. "We're heading to an old contact of mine. Someone who might know more about Kurogami's plans."

Ryo grinned. "Great. Another shady person in a sketchy part of town. This is becoming a theme."

---

The Contact

The group arrived at a dingy bar tucked between two towering apartment buildings. The sign above the door read "The Broken Blade" in faded letters.

"Wow," Kenji said, wrinkling his nose. "This place looks like it's never passed a health inspection."

Akira ignored him and pushed open the door. Inside, the bar was dimly lit, with a handful of patrons nursing drinks. A wiry man with a crooked nose stood behind the counter, wiping a glass.

"Akira," the bartender said, raising an eyebrow. "Didn't expect to see you here."

"Desperate times," Akira replied. "We need information, Jin."

The bartender, Jin, leaned forward. "Information costs. And I don't take IOUs."

Before Akira could reply, Kenji piped up. "Do you take frying pans? They're high-quality and very effective in combat."

Jin stared at him, unimpressed. "No."

Ryo chuckled. "Ignore him. He's… special."

---

The Lead

After a tense negotiation involving some gold coins Sora had "borrowed" from an artifact trade, Jin finally leaned in, lowering his voice.

"There's been talk," he said. "Kurogami's been gathering shards, sure, but he's also been recruiting. Building an army of shard users."

"Recruiting?" Rei asked, frowning. "How does he even find them?"

Jin shrugged. "Some say he's got a network of spies. Others say he uses the shards themselves to locate potential wielders."

Kenji leaned closer. "Wait, does that mean he might be looking for us?"

Jin gave him a flat look. "Kid, if he doesn't know about you already, he will soon."

Ryo clenched his fists. "Let him come. We'll take him down, shard or no shard."

Akira shot him a warning glance. "Don't be reckless, Ryo. Kurogami isn't just another bounty hunter. He's leagues ahead of anything we've faced so far."

Jin nodded. "She's right. If you want to stop him, you'll need to be smarter—and faster."

---

An Ambush

As they left the bar, the rain had turned into a full-fledged storm. Lightning illuminated the streets as the group hurried toward the nearest subway station.

But before they could reach it, shadows peeled away from the walls, taking humanoid forms.

"Looks like Kurogami's spies found us," Rei muttered, activating her shard.

"Why do these things always show up when it's raining?" Kenji complained, raising his frying pan.

The shadowy figures lunged, their movements unnaturally fast. Ryo barely had time to dodge as one swiped at him with razor-sharp claws.

"Alright," Ryo said, cracking his knuckles. "Let's make this quick."

He charged forward, delivering a powerful punch that dispersed one of the shadows into wisps of smoke. Rei spun gracefully, her shard forming a glowing blade that sliced through another attacker.

Kenji, despite his grumbling, managed to clobber a shadow with his frying pan. "Ha! Who needs fancy powers when you've got good old-fashioned cookware?"

Sora, crouched behind a parked car, pulled out a gadget and fired a pulse of light that stunned several shadows. "You're welcome!" they called out.

Akira, as calm as ever, focused their shard energy into precise strikes, dismantling the attackers with calculated efficiency.

---

A New Threat

Just as the last shadow fell, a figure stepped out from the alley. Clad in black armor and radiating an aura of dark energy, they carried a massive, jagged sword.

"Well, this is bad," Sora muttered.

The armored figure raised their weapon, pointing it at Ryo. "Kurogami sends his regards. Hand over the shard, or face annihilation."

Ryo stepped forward, smirking. "Annihilation? That's dramatic. You got anything more original?"

The figure charged, swinging their sword in a wide arc. Ryo barely managed to block with his shard's energy shield, the impact sending him skidding back.

"Okay, they're strong," he admitted, shaking his hands. "Anyone got a plan?"

Rei and Akira moved in tandem, attacking from opposite sides. The figure deflected their strikes effortlessly, countering with a burst of dark energy that sent them sprawling.

Kenji, gripping his frying pan like a knight's sword, shouted, "For snacks and glory!" and charged.

The figure swatted him aside like a fly.

"Ow," Kenji groaned from a puddle. "I think I pulled something."

---

A Desperate Move

As the battle raged, Ryo realized they were outmatched. The figure's attacks were relentless, and their defense was impenetrable.

"Sora!" Ryo shouted. "Got any gadgets that can turn the tide?"

Sora fumbled through their bag, pulling out a glowing sphere. "This might work! Or it might explode! Either way, it'll be exciting!"

"Just do it!" Ryo yelled.

Sora hurled the sphere at the figure, and it detonated in a burst of light and sound. The figure staggered, their armor cracking.

Taking the chance, Ryo channeled all his shard's energy into a single, devastating punch. His fist connected with the figure's chest, shattering their armor and sending them flying into a wall.

The figure slumped to the ground, their form dissolving into shadows.

---

Victory and Warnings

The group stood in the rain, breathing heavily.

"That was… intense," Rei said, wiping her blade clean.

Akira nodded. "We won, but barely. Kurogami's forces are stronger than ever."

Kenji limped over, clutching his frying pan. "I think my frying pan needs a vacation."

Sora chuckled, despite the tension. "Well, at least we know one thing for sure: Kurogami is serious about hunting us."

Ryo clenched his fists, rain dripping from his hair. "Let him come. We're not backing down."

As the storm raged on, the group disappeared into the shadows of the city, preparing for the next battle.

The group retreated to a nearby abandoned warehouse to regroup after the battle. The sound of rain hammering the tin roof drowned out their hurried breaths as they secured the entrances.

"Okay," Sora began, setting down their bag. "Let's take a headcount. Everyone in one piece?"

Kenji raised his hand, still clutching the frying pan. "I might be emotionally scarred, but physically, I'm fine."

Rei rolled her eyes. "Good to know you're still joking."

Ryo paced near a broken window, his fists clenched. "That armored guy… He wasn't just another thug. Kurogami's really stepping up his game."

Akira nodded. "And that shadow energy… It's not from a normal shard. He's tapping into something much darker."

Sora was already working, connecting their decoding device to the shard. "If we want to stand a chance, we need to figure out what's inside this thing. Fast."

---

The Shard's Revelation

As Sora's device hummed to life, the shard began to glow faintly, casting intricate patterns on the walls. The light pulsed in time with the storm outside, as if alive.

"Whoa," Kenji whispered, leaning closer. "Is it supposed to do that? Or is this the part where it explodes and we all die dramatically?"

"Shut up, Kenji," Rei snapped, though her voice betrayed her nervousness.

Sora adjusted the controls, their goggles reflecting the shard's light. "It's… decrypting something. Give me a minute."

The patterns shifted, forming symbols and text in an ancient language. Akira frowned. "That's not a normal shard. It's a key."

"A key to what?" Ryo asked, stepping closer.

"To the Forgotten Realms," Akira replied.

Kenji blinked. "Wait, the Forgotten Realms? Like, the ancient place of legend where all the shards originally came from?"

"Exactly," Akira said, their voice heavy with seriousness. "If Kurogami gathers all the shards, he could open the gateway and harness the power of the Forgotten Realms. And trust me, that would make him unstoppable."

---

A New Threat Arrives

Before they could process the revelation, a loud crash echoed through the warehouse. The main door was torn off its hinges, and a group of shadowy figures flooded in, their glowing red eyes cutting through the darkness.

"Why can't we ever catch a break?" Kenji groaned, raising his frying pan.

The shadows moved with inhuman speed, darting between the group. Ryo lunged at one, his fist colliding with its chest and dissipating it into smoke.

"Keep them away from the shard!" Rei shouted, her blade slicing through another shadow.

Sora scrambled to protect their equipment, throwing a handful of small flash grenades that lit up the room in bursts of light. "These guys just don't quit!"

Akira, calm as ever, moved through the chaos with precision, dismantling the attackers one by one. "They're after the shard. We can't stay here."

Kenji yelped as a shadow lunged at him, swinging his frying pan wildly. "Why do they always come for me? Do I have some kind of 'attack first' sign on my back?"

"Because you're loud," Rei shot back, skewering another shadow.

---

The Chase

Realizing they were outnumbered, the group grabbed the shard and Sora's equipment and made a break for it. They darted through the storm-soaked streets, the shadows close behind.

Ryo turned to throw a punch at one of their pursuers, but it dissolved and reappeared ahead of him. "These things are cheating!"

"Keep moving!" Akira called out, leading them down a narrow alley.

Sora tossed a small device over their shoulder, and it exploded into a net of electricity, slowing the shadows down. "That'll buy us a few seconds!"

Kenji huffed as he ran, his frying pan clanging against his side. "Next time, we pick hiding spots that aren't obvious ambush locations!"

---

The Final Stand

The group reached an open plaza, the shadows closing in. With nowhere left to run, they turned to face their attackers.

"Alright," Ryo said, cracking his knuckles. "Let's finish this."

The shadows formed a circle around them, their red eyes glowing brighter. From the center of the circle, a new figure emerged—a tall man cloaked in darkness, his face obscured.

"Well, well," the man said, his voice cold and echoing. "You've made quite the mess, haven't you?"

"Who are you?" Rei demanded, her blade at the ready.

The man smirked. "Call me Kaito. I'm here to retrieve what's rightfully Kurogami's."

Ryo stepped forward, his shard glowing. "Over my dead body."

Kaito's smirk widened. "If you insist."

He raised his hand, and the shadows lunged.

---

The Battle

The plaza erupted into chaos as the group fought to hold their ground. Ryo met Kaito head-on, their shards clashing in a burst of energy.

"You're strong," Kaito admitted, deflecting Ryo's punches with ease. "But strength alone won't save you."

"We'll see about that," Ryo growled, pouring more energy into his strikes.

Rei and Akira worked in perfect sync, taking down the shadow minions with precise teamwork.

Kenji, meanwhile, swung his frying pan wildly, managing to knock out a few shadows. "Not bad for a guy with no powers, huh?"

Sora fired off more gadgets, creating barriers and blinding flashes to keep the group from being overwhelmed.

Despite their efforts, Kaito's power was overwhelming. He unleashed a wave of dark energy, knocking everyone to the ground.

"You're outmatched," Kaito said, stepping closer to the shard. "And now, the shard is mine."

---

A Last-Minute Save

Just as Kaito reached for the shard, a brilliant light erupted from it, forcing him back. The shard floated into the air, its patterns glowing brighter than ever.

"What is this?" Kaito snarled, shielding his eyes.

The shard's energy surged, forming a protective barrier around the group. Ryo felt a surge of power flow through him, and his shard glowed in response.

"We're not done yet," Ryo said, standing tall.

The group, reinvigorated by the shard's energy, launched a counterattack. Together, they overwhelmed Kaito, forcing him to retreat with the remaining shadows.

"This isn't over," Kaito warned, disappearing into the storm.

---

Regrouping

As the rain began to let up, the group stood in the empty plaza, catching their breath.

"What just happened?" Rei asked, staring at the shard.

"It protected us," Sora said, their voice filled with awe. "But why?"

Akira's expression was grim. "Because it knows we're its best chance at stopping Kurogami."

Ryo looked at the shard, determination in his eyes. "Then we'd better not let it down."

The storm passed, but the danger was far from over. The group's journey was only just beginning, and the battles ahead would test them like never before.
