Chapter 6 - 6 The Drums of War

By midday, the entire village had been mobilized. Shinobi armed themselves with weapons and supplies, while civilians were ushered into underground shelters reinforced with protective seals. The air buzzed with tension, and the faint hum of the newly deployed barrier seemed to echo the collective heartbeat of Uzushiogakure.

Akane and I stood on the village's outer wall, staring into the horizon. A faint dust cloud had begun to form in the distance—evidence of the approaching enemy forces.

"They're moving faster than we expected," Akane muttered, gripping the hilt of her kunai.

I nodded, my mind racing. The enemy's sheer numbers were a terrifying thought. Even with Uzushiogakure's formidable shinobi and our barrier, the odds were stacked against us.

"Remember," I said, "the barrier is our first line of defense. It's designed to absorb and redirect most of their attacks. But if they find a way to disrupt the network…"

"We'll handle it," Akane said, cutting me off. "We didn't work this hard just to let them tear it down. Besides, we're Uzumaki—we don't break that easily."

Her confidence was infectious, and I couldn't help but smile despite the fear gnawing at my stomach.

The first attack came at sunset.

The enemy forces, a coalition of shinobi from multiple villages, surged toward Uzushiogakure like a tidal wave. They moved with precision, their ranks filled with experienced warriors and skilled jutsu users. From atop the wall, I could see their headbands—many bore no insignia, but some displayed symbols I recognized.

Kumo. Iwa. Kiri.

These weren't just random mercenaries. These were elite forces sent by villages that viewed the Uzumaki Clan as a threat.

"They're testing the barrier," Akane said as the first wave of projectiles struck the shimmering dome. Explosive tags detonated on impact, sending ripples through the barrier but leaving it intact.

"They'll keep probing until they find a weakness," I said, watching as a group of enemy shinobi began weaving hand signs.

A moment later, a barrage of elemental jutsu slammed into the barrier—fireballs, lightning bolts, and torrents of water. The barrier held strong, redirecting the energy back toward the attackers in a dazzling display of light.

Cheers erupted from the Uzumaki shinobi stationed along the walls, but I couldn't allow myself to relax. This was only the beginning.

As night fell, the enemy shifted tactics. Instead of attacking the barrier head-on, they began targeting the chakra siphoning points we had integrated into the village's defenses.

"They're trying to disrupt the network!" I shouted, running along the wall to where a team of Uzumaki shinobi was struggling to repair one of the damaged seals.

"Riku!" Akane called, catching up to me. "We need to split up. You handle the east side—I'll take the west."

"Be careful," I said, gripping her shoulder.

She smirked. "You too."

We parted ways, each of us racing to protect the barrier.

The next few hours were a blur of chaos. I moved from one chakra siphoning point to the next, repairing seals and fending off enemy shinobi who had managed to breach the village's outer defenses
