Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Test Run

The dawn of the test run brought a nervous energy to the workshop. The larger prototype, now dubbed "Aether-1," sat at the center of the room, its new crystal housing gleaming under the soft overhead lights. The team had spent the past week meticulously assembling and calibrating every component, but uncertainty still lingered in the air.

"We've triple-checked everything," Mina said, tightening the final screw on the cooling system. "If this doesn't work, it's not because we missed something."

Aiko glanced at her watch. "The investors' representative will be here in two hours. Let's make sure it does work."

Haruto stood back, taking in the sight of Aether-1. It was larger than the original prototype but still compact enough to fit on a wheeled platform. The crystal at its core pulsed faintly, its golden hue promising untapped potential.

"This is it," Haruto said, his voice tinged with both hope and anxiety. "This is our chance to prove it works."

Setting the Stage

The test site was a modest warehouse on the outskirts of Kyoto, rented for the day to simulate a controlled environment. The space buzzed with the hum of generators and the chatter of technicians who had been hired to oversee safety protocols.

Daisuke Kuroda arrived first, his usual confident grin in place. "You've outdone yourselves," he said, clapping Haruto on the back. "The setup looks professional."

"Let's hope the performance matches," Haruto replied, trying to sound more confident than he felt.

Shortly after, the investors' representative arrived. Akira Fujimoto was a tall man in his fifties, with a stern expression and a no-nonsense demeanor. He surveyed the setup with sharp eyes, his hands clasped behind his back.

"This is your full-scale prototype?" Fujimoto asked, nodding toward Aether-1.

"Yes," Haruto said, stepping forward. "We've designed it to demonstrate sustained energy output under realistic conditions."

"Let's see what it can do," Fujimoto said, his tone neutral.

The Demonstration

The team gathered around the control panel, Haruto's hands hovering over the switches. He took a deep breath and glanced at Aiko and Mina. They both nodded, their expressions resolute.

"Powering up," Haruto said, flipping the first switch.

Aether-1 came to life with a low hum, the crystal at its core glowing brighter. Mina monitored the readouts on her tablet, calling out metrics as they stabilized.

"Energy flow is steady. No overheating," she said.

Haruto activated the next phase, connecting Aether-1 to a series of industrial lights and a small motorized system designed to simulate real-world applications. The lights flickered on, casting the warehouse in a warm glow, and the motor hummed smoothly as it began to turn.

"Output is at 85% efficiency," Mina reported, a note of excitement in her voice.

Fujimoto watched silently, his expression unreadable.

A Sudden Challenge

Just as Haruto was about to move to the final phase, a warning light flashed on the control panel.

"Power fluctuation," Aiko said, her voice tight.

Haruto's heart sank. "What's causing it?"

Mina's fingers flew over her tablet. "The cooling system is struggling. The increased load is pushing the crystal harder than expected."

Fujimoto raised an eyebrow. "You're losing stability."

"Not for long," Mina snapped, rushing to the prototype. She quickly adjusted a valve on the cooling system, reducing the strain on the crystal. The warning light dimmed, and the system stabilized.

Haruto let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "Crisis averted. Moving to the final phase."

---

The Climax

The final phase was a sustained energy output test, designed to show that Aether-1 could handle continuous operation. Haruto activated the sequence, and the crystal's glow intensified, filling the room with its golden light.

"Output is holding steady," Mina said, her voice steady despite the tension.

The motor sped up, and the lights grew brighter, their warmth palpable. The hum of the crystal filled the air, a sound both soothing and powerful.

Five minutes passed. Then ten. Aether-1 remained stable, its energy output unwavering.

Fujimoto finally spoke. "Impressive. It seems you've solved the stability issue."

Haruto nodded, relief washing over him. "We've worked hard to ensure it can perform under these conditions."

Fujimoto approached the prototype, studying it closely. "If this performance can be replicated on a larger scale, you may be onto something revolutionary."

Haruto exchanged a triumphant look with Aiko and Mina. They had done it.

The Aftermath

As the team packed up the equipment, the weight of the day began to lift. Fujimoto had left with a promise to report his findings to the investors, and Daisuke had already begun talking about securing additional funding.

"You were amazing today," Haruto said to Mina as they loaded Aether-1 into the van.

Mina smirked. "Don't get used to it. I'm not usually this cooperative."

Aiko approached, her phone in hand. "I just got an email from Fujimoto. He's already scheduled a follow-up meeting with the full board."

Haruto felt a surge of hope. For the first time, their dream felt within reach.
