Chereads / Charlotte Vantille / Chapter 2 - An Intruder

Chapter 2 - An Intruder

Sitting in her garde under the umbrella shade,Charlotte was focused on her book. She wold often flip bah and forth, as if confirming something.

Thunder roared in the sky,the clouds became darker as they hoovered around the mansion

She looked up at the sky,her blue eyes staring at the darkening clouds in the sky.

Soon, little patter of rain water could be heard, but not even a single drop landed on a grassblade. Instead of fallng to the ground, they seemed to land on a semi-circle-like barrier.

One would be astonished at such a thing, but Charlotte seemed unbothered by it,almost as if it was normal.

There was no reaction shown on her face. She instead went back to her book, flipping it's pages.

She sat there, enjoying her book and the sound of rain. Even the smell of rain could barely be smelled because of the barrier.

Footsteps sounded behind her, stopping only a few feet away from where she sat.

"Reading in the dark? Aren't you putting too much stress on your eyes?"a familiar voice to her sounded.

"That's for you, not me. I have night vision, and what's it's importance if I don't use it to my advantage?"she responded.

The person reach out for a chair on her right side, pulling it out of the rounded table sitting on it.

"What is shame. Only if I had one"the person remarked, of course it was none other than Alan.

"Oh please, don't be dramatic."she said as she closed her book. "You could just navigate your way through any kind of environment."

He just gave a small smile,"that's also true"his eyes spotted a dessert on the table. He reached out to have some but she just put it away.

"Excuse you but, you have no right to take what doesn't belong to you" she told him, holding the dessert close to herself.

"Not even just a bite?"he asked, hinting to have a taste of it.

She looked at it, back a him and decided to put it all in her mouth eating it. "Sorry, it wasn't enough"she told him with a sinister smile.

"You obviously did that on purpose. How greedy."he commented. "I guess I'll take that as a compliment then"she answered him,not bothered by what he called her.

The thunder sounded again."I shall take my leave then" she got up, ready to go back inside. "Farewell,Alan"

"Just don't lock yourself in that office of yours"

She took off, completely ignoring a word he just said.

Alan waited a while before following Charlotte into the mansion. The entrance was dim, probably because of the dark clouds. He found her, standing still.

"Anything wrong Charlie?" He asked her, noticing something was wrong. "Someone was definitely here." he heard her say.

Alan scanned the area, noticing the flower vase on the right side of the table.

Charlotte was a person who arranged everything in order, not even a single inch different. He had known her for many years to notice this detail about her. She usually, in fact always put the vase on the right side.

He also picked up the faint smell of an unfamiliar perfume.

He turned back to her, "hey Charlie, when exactly was the last time you had perfume on?"

She turned to look at him. "I don't know... And where did you even get that name from?"

"Your brother"he said proudly

"I'm not actually surprised. You asked when I last put on perfume. Why? Did you catch anything?"

"A faint smell of perfume. It's rather. . . Feminine. "

"So what you're saying is that. . . A woman. . . Or a girl, or whatever came in here?" She went into thought "but what for? "

"Judging by its smell, the person really likes to put on a strong perfume. The perfume, it smells like one of those from the early 60s "

She stared at him,"what do you even get all those information from? "

"That's because my dear. . . I like to go out a lot, and you like to lock yourself in that office of yours, going through that book you love."

"Sometimes, I don't even know what to say of you."he smiled in Triumph after hearing her say that.

"So. . . Is anything missing? "He asked, trying to sound serious again. "No... just..." Looks at the things disarranged (in her opinion). "Everything has been disarranged" She said in disgust.

He looked at the tidied up place,"sure,it is" he said with irony. He went to sit on a nearby couch,"what do you think 'she' must have come here for ? "He asked, his blood red eyes staring at her.
