Rose said she wasn't expecting someone; maybe the person behind the door had come to see Arthur; I know no one who would be looking for me in the place.
Either way, I went to get the door.
"Could you help me with your dad's lunch while I go get the door?" I asked Rose as I exited the kitchen.
"Sure."
Pulling the doorknob of the main open, I was greeted by the blonde guy who brought Rose home last night from prom.
He was a cute white kid, I would award him that.
He was dressed in a blue flannel shirt tucked into his black pants.
His appearance oozed a nerdy kind.
I made a mental note to ask her of the kind of guys she found attractive later on, not like that's my business but c'mon.
Rose was a nerdy girl too. By the law of things or whatever, two nerdy people can't form a couple.
Here I am already trying to match Rose. I brushed my thoughts off
"Oh dear." I flashed the warmest grin I left reserved for children at him.
"Good afternoon ma'am." He adjusted his glasses, wearing a heavy grin.
"I came to see Rose, is she in?" He asked as he looked over my shoulders like Rose would be standing right behind me.
"Yeah, she is. One sec, I'll go get her for you."
I motioned for him to come in.
"Have a seat, I'll call her up. Do you need anything?"
"No, I'm good."
He had to be treated nicely as he was such a sweet soul; what would Rose have done if he hadn't been there at the prom to bring her? Home?
I made a beeline to the kitchen, Rose was at the table Island.
"You've got a visitor."
"What? Who?" Her surprise was more so than usual.
I mean, if I were her I'd be surprised too.
I've never heard of her speaking of any significant friend.
"The Gibson guy that brought you home last night."
"What?"
"Did you let him in?"
"Yeah, why?"
"You shouldn't have. Fuck that guy." She mumbled the last part as she strolled past me.
"You better be nice. If you want him out, walk him out quietly. You do not want to steer up any chaos else your Dad would find out about last night."
"Urghh." she groaned quietly once she'd reached the passage leading to the living room where her guest was.
Trust me, I left the kitchen to go pry.
I angled perfectly at the passage in such a way that hid my presence.
Putting off the gas cooker on my way out, every fucking thing is my business as long as it happens in my sight.
Arthur was probably asleep after he'd taken his shower, so I had my time.
I'm being presented with Rose's back; she stood arms folded in front of Gibson, who seemed like he wanted to shit in his pants while he sat. I'm sure she had a displeasing scowl on her face.
That girl was a pretty baby tiger.
"To what do I owe this unannounced visit?"
"I just wanted to check up on you. You were being pathological last night, and it was very concerning." He said standing up as he spoke.
"Pathological…you know what? I'm going to say this quietly and I'm hoping you're gonna get it right."
"Get the fuck out."
She swung her hand to the door, motioning at him to leave.
"Rose please hear me out…I've always admired you right from tenth grade. I had to switch positions with the girl who was supposed to sit right beside you at the lab, Just…just because I had to revel in the proximity cause it was going to probably be our last day at school. I want to wrap up the last days of senior high with the memories of you."
Hmm, this was a drama. In full fucking HD, telenovela 3 fucking D.
"Gibson, please don't make it more tiring than it already is."
Her hands fell to the sides like she had lost all words for this Gibson guy.
"I don't get that part of proximity you just said and trust me when I said I do not want to get it at all."
"Please just leave. You ruined my prom yesterday, you wouldn't come to my father's house to spoil my phone as well."
"I despise you for all that is what. You're the reason everyone in school knows I'm sick. If had just shut the fuck up, I would have snuck out of that lab without anyone knowing, but no, for once, you had to prove the damn hero."
Gibson's shoulders fell in defeat; he'd come to reunite with his crush, but he'd failed. I was beginning to feel pity for him.
He was wretched.
He was slowly making his way to the exit as Rose had ordered him to when stopped abruptly and turned, meeting Rose sulky gaze.
"If you could just grant one request, I assure you I wouldn't ask for another hence."
"Go on, and it better has to be what I could grant."
Look at me peering my ears to hear what the poor guy had to say.
I watched as his throat worked while making a quick adjustment to his glasses before he spoke.
"Let's go on a nice date. I wanna spend one last time with you."
"One last time? That's I'm sick to the point where I wouldn't make it to the end of summer or what?"
"That's not.."
"I don't know why every word that comes out of that mouth of yours tends to piss me off."
"I didn't mean it that way, Rose. You're getting it all wrong. I.."
He drew out a breath, pinching the bridge of his nose with his eyes closed.
"I like you so much; if you don't want me, I do understand that well enough, but having a date with the girl I've always admired in school would go a long way. You can decide never to speak with me after the date, I will be fine. I just want to have a good memory of you I could hold on to."
"Alright."
I knew that girl rolled her eyes once she said that.
She should probably give him a chance; who knows; love could come in any form. Including the form of a flannel tucked-up shirt and a huge glasses boy.
"So… that's a yes?"
"No."
