Chapter 9 - Pretty face

Kain Locke

The car has been in motion for over an hour, and all this time all I had in mind was the bothering why?

Why does he say that? And what exactly he meant by coming with him doesn't guarantee Brian's safety.

I was perplexed as to why he said something like that, what he meant by it, and of course how it's not going to impact my son.

However, the question was short lived in my mind when the car dipped downward, and before I knew it, the digital barrier coverage for the mansion dissolved right in our faces as the car entered and landed with a soft hum.

Brian was hugged to my chest tightly,

Two of the men that came with Kael stepped down from the backseat, and crossed the space to the side of the car where I sat.

The door automatically opened and they straightened, as one of them said, "The boy. We're getting him out of the car here."

I glanced over at Kael, but he was silent where he was, like he wasn't interested in interfering.

How could it be this soon?

Previously, when this deal was being made, I hadn't felt this way, but right now that Brian is about to be taken away, I was hesitant, the boy also clung onto me as though he could tell we're going to be separated here.

"I thought we're going to the same place.." I fumbled with my words as I held him tightly, his little fingers clutching my shirt as if letting go meant losing me forever. His body trembling against mine, his soft cries muffled against my chest.

One of the men took a step closer, "Hand him over."

"No," I shook my head with disapproval.

"Sorry, but we have to get him off here." The other one said, but his tone made it clear he wasn't being polite at all, as he leaned inside the car to get the boy from my arms.

"Let go of him!" I sneered at his face, turning to Kael with cold eyes, but he wouldn't even look at my face as I gritted my teeths, turning back to look at the guard.

"Stop making a fuss and give them the boy," Kael let out a slow breath beside me.

"What are you on about? You said he'll be provided a caretaker, not that we're going to be separated." I shot back at him, but he exhaled slowly as though he's tired of this already.

"If you think a place like the base is the best for him, then suit yourself." His voice came lowly from my side afterwards.

My reluctantly gave way into something else at the hearing of his words. Although he was brutal with his words, the truth in it couldn't be missed.

A place like the base where the enemy can swarm in at any moment was definitely not a good idea for Brian.

I glanced down at his tear-filled eyes looking up at me with silent pleading. And my heart clenched painfully.

"Mama…" he sniffled, shaking his head frantically. "Don't let them take me…I don't want to go."

I shut my eyes tightly, my jaw clenching as I forced my arms to loosen around him.

"It's okay," I whispered, my voice barely holding on. "You'll be safe here. I'll come back for you. I promise."

However, he shook his head violently. "No! No! I wanna stay with you!"

Of course, the guard wasn't having it as they reached in, prying Brian from my arms.

And the moment my grip broke, he screamed, kicking and struggling.

"Mama!"

His small hands reached out for me, but his fingers grasped at nothing. The moment they took him a few steps away, it felt like something inside me shattered.

I squeezed my eyes shut as his screams ring in my ears.

The sound grew smaller and fainter.

Then, silence.

It was only then that I forced myself to open my eyes again, my gaze shifting back to Kael. "He'll be safe, right?" I questioned hoarsely.

He met my eyes, "Relax," he muttered. "I'm not such a monster that I'd lead my own son into danger."

I let out a low, bitter chuckle. "Could've fooled me."

The man didn't respond afterwards, he simply watched as the guards returned to the car.

The door clicked shut behind them, and then the car hummed back to life, lifting off the ground.

I turned my head, staring at the mansion as we ascended and flew out of the compound. The digital barrier flickered for a brief moment before sealing itself again, then it grew transparent and blended into the landscape like it was just another house.

I swallowed hard, my hands balling into fists on my lap. My heart still ached,

Brian would be safe. He should,

I just had to survive long enough to see him again.

We fly for over thirty minutes, to an island in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by woods.

The car began to drift low, and lower until the engine hummed and landed in front of what looked like a run down building, looking ordinarily plain, with a normal metal window and huge iron rusted doors that look like the type you can find in an abandoned warehouse.

The engine went off and the car door automatically opened. I stepped out and watched as Kael also stepped out, he didn't wait another moment as he walked away.

"Is this really the base?" The question slipped out of my mouth before I could stop it.

Compared to the old base, this looks more like a kidnappers den, than a base of a multi billionaire drug dealer.

"What do you expect? A grand hotel?" One of the men in black behind me mocked and the rest burst out laughing.

I rolled my eyes at them and went to grab my luggage at the car booth.

It wasn't until the guide came out to welcome me that I realized this is happening for real.

"Kain, right?" he asked.

I gave a simple nod. "Mn."

"I'll take you to your room and go over everything you need to know."

I grabbed my bag and followed him as he spoke, but I wasn't really paying attention.

He talked about the base, the rules, and other things I had no interest in. I only responded with short hums now and then, just to let him know I was still listening.

And when we eventually got inside of the building, it looked just like the outside cold, plain, and lifeless. It wasn't much, but at least it wasn't worse than I expected, the walls were still tiled and there were bright white lights installed in every ceiling.

We walked down several long corridors, passing by rooms filled with people. Some glanced in our direction, but most didn't seem to care.

Eventually, we reached a room with four beds, two at the bottom, two at the top.

There were already two people inside. They were both sitting on their beds, one in a low afro cut and the other simply had his hair covered with a face cap. They were busy talking, but when we entered, they turned to look at us.

"Where's Alec?" The man asked them glancing around, and the low cut haired guy merely shrugged,

"Probably in the dining hall."

The guide nodded and gestured toward the room. "This is where you'll be staying. Unpack your things and get settled. These two will be your roommates from now on. The third one's out for now, you'll be knowing each other as time moves on."

I nodded and pushed in the bag, "Got it."

I turned to the others and gave a small nod in greeting, "Hey." I said wheeling the box to sit beside the empty bed downward.

They didn't even bother to hide their disapproval. As the one with a low cut scoffed, while the other barely spared me a glance before turning away. "Tch. Another one"

"A pretty face? Are they kidding really? Does he come here to die?"

I clenched my jaw but didn't say anything.

However, as I set my bag down, I noticed something different from before. In the past, only omegas stayed at the base, but now… there were betas here too. At least the one with an afro cut is obviously a beta.

I wasn't sure yet if that was a good thing or a bad thing.

But either way, I had a feeling my time here wasn't going to be easy.
