Chapter 10 - Chapter 11: A Glimmer of Truth

The morning was crisp, the sky painted in soft shades of blue and gold. Li Wei and Feng Rui resumed their journey, their steps in sync as they followed the winding path through the dense forest. Though the air was calm, an unspoken tension lingered between them, each man lost in his own thoughts.

"Where are we heading?" Li Wei asked after a while, breaking the silence.

"There's a town a few miles from here," Feng Rui replied, scanning their surroundings. "We can rest there, maybe gather some information about this book."

Li Wei nodded, clutching the ancient tome closer to his chest. The symbols within its pages had begun to haunt his dreams, their meaning as elusive as the masked figures who pursued them.

"Do you think the answers are worth all this trouble?" Li Wei asked, his voice laced with doubt.

Feng Rui glanced at him, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. "Anything worth having is worth fighting for, scholar. Besides…" He hesitated, his gaze softening. "You're worth it."

Li Wei's cheeks flushed, and he looked away, his heart thudding in his chest. "You're impossible," he muttered, though his voice lacked the usual sharpness.

---

The town came into view by midday, its stone walls standing stark against the rolling hills. As they approached, Feng Rui pulled his hood up, his demeanor shifting into one of cautious alertness.

"Stay close," he murmured, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword.

Li Wei obeyed, his steps quickening to match Feng Rui's. The streets were crowded with merchants and townsfolk, their chatter blending into a low hum. Despite the bustling atmosphere, Li Wei couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.

Feng Rui led them to a small, inconspicuous inn tucked away on a quiet side street. The innkeeper, a stout man with a weathered face, greeted them with a wary glance before showing them to a modest room.

"We'll rest here for a bit," Feng Rui said, locking the door behind them. "But keep your guard up. This place might not be as safe as it seems."

Li Wei sat on the edge of the bed, his fingers tracing the book's leather cover. "Do you think we'll find anything useful here?"

Feng Rui leaned against the wall, his arms crossed. "If we're lucky. If not…" He shrugged. "We'll figure it out as we go."

Li Wei sighed, his gaze dropping to the floor. "I don't know how you do it—always so confident, so sure of yourself."

Feng Rui chuckled softly. "Trust me, it's all an act. The truth is, I'm just as lost as you are. But sometimes, pretending to be strong is the only way to get through."

Li Wei looked up at him, surprised by the admission. For a moment, he saw a vulnerability in Feng Rui that he hadn't noticed before, and it made him feel closer to the enigmatic swordsman than ever.

---

That evening, they ventured into the town's marketplace, hoping to learn more about the book. The stalls were filled with colorful wares and fragrant spices, but Feng Rui's focus remained sharp, his eyes scanning the crowd for potential threats.

"Over there," he said, nodding toward an old woman sitting beneath a canopy, surrounded by scrolls and ancient artifacts.

Li Wei followed him, clutching the book tightly. The woman looked up as they approached, her sharp eyes narrowing.

"Travelers," she said, her voice raspy. "What brings you to my stall?"

Li Wei hesitated, but Feng Rui stepped forward, pulling the book from his bag. "We're looking for someone who can decipher this," he said, placing it on the table.

The woman's expression darkened as she opened the book, her fingers tracing the symbols. "Where did you find this?" she demanded, her tone laced with urgency.

"I… I stumbled upon it in an old library," Li Wei stammered, taken aback by her reaction.

The woman's gaze shifted between them, her eyes sharp and calculating. "This is no ordinary book," she said, her voice low. "These symbols are part of an ancient code—a key to something hidden, something powerful."

Li Wei's heart raced. "What kind of power?"

The woman leaned closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "The kind that people kill for. You're in grave danger, both of you."

Feng Rui's hand moved instinctively to his sword, his posture tense. "What do you mean?"

The woman hesitated, then said, "There's a group—shadows in the night—who've been searching for this book for decades. If they know you have it, they won't stop until they've taken it… and your lives."

Li Wei's grip on the table tightened. "Then what should we do?"

The woman's gaze softened, and she placed a hand over his. "Protect it, no matter the cost. The answers it holds could change everything."

---

As they left the stall, the weight of the woman's words pressed heavily on Li Wei. He glanced at Feng Rui, who walked beside him, his expression unreadable.

"Do you think she's right?" Li Wei asked quietly.

Feng Rui nodded, his hand resting on the book tucked under his arm. "I do. And that means we need to be more careful than ever."

Li Wei swallowed hard, fear and determination swirling within him. "I don't want anyone else to get hurt because of this."

Feng Rui stopped, turning to face him. "No one will. I'll make sure of it."

Li Wei looked at him, his chest tightening. "Why do you care so much about me? You could've walked away from all of this, but you didn't."

Feng Rui hesitated, his gaze softening. "Because… you remind me of someone I couldn't save. And because, whether you realize it or not, you've given me something to fight for again."

Li Wei's breath caught, the sincerity in Feng Rui's voice cutting through his fear. In that moment, he realized that their bond had grown into something far deeper than mere companionship.

As the sun set over the town, casting it in hues of gold and crimson, the two men stood together, their shared resolve shining brighter than ever.
