Chapter 16 - Chapter 016: The Zeroth Step VIII

The play ended in a simple manner but it left the audience deeply moved by the characters' transformations and the powerful message of finding strength and purpose in life.

Jake was the first to clap, followed by Dylan and then the rest of the audience.

"What do you think?" Jake asked.

"The story has potential for improvement in so many ways. I'm sure they had to cut a lot because it couldn't be too long," Dylan replied, narrowing his eyes as he thought about how everything played out.

As the play progressed, the audience was completely swept up in the story. They watched as Luca's character gently tried to coax life back into the girl. Each of her lifeless responses seemed to tighten the tension in the room, making everyone lean in closer, eager to see what would happen next.

When the girl started interacting with the villagers, there was a noticeable shift in the crowd's mood. The small changes in her behaviour, the way she began to observe the villagers and eventually join in their work, sparked a sense of hope among the audience.

The crowd could feel the girl's transformation, and they responded with soft murmurs of encouragement as if they were willing her to find her way back to life.

The pivotal moment came during the scene where Luca's character confronted the girl about her plans on the day they first met. Her haunting reply left a deep impact, and the audience collectively shuddered at the rawness of her words. When Luca's character vowed to help her live again, the tension broke slightly, and the audience silently cheered for his determination.

As the girl slowly rediscovered her will to live, the audience's reactions mirrored her journey. They smiled at her small victories, sighed with relief as she opened up to Luca's character, and nodded in agreement when she started to see the beauty in the simple life around her.

By the time she smiled for the first time, the entire room was captivated. Her smile, though small, felt monumental, and the audience reacted with soft gasps and murmurs of approval.

The final scenes brought a wave of emotions through the crowd. The rain, which had symbolized the girl's despair, now seemed to cleanse and renew. When the girl returned home and began to reconcile with her family, there were audible sniffles from the audience, who had become emotionally invested in her journey.

The climax of the play, where Luca's character and the girl reunited, brought the audience to the edge of their seats. The subtle smiles exchanged between them felt like a well-earned reward, not just for the characters but for the audience who had journeyed with them.

As the curtains closed, the silence was quickly replaced by thunderous applause. People stood up, cheering and clapping, some wiping away tears. The powerful performances resonated deeply, leaving everyone in the room touched by the story of loss, rediscovery, and hope.

Conversations buzzed as people shared their thoughts, praising the actors for their convincing portrayals and discussing the profound themes the play had explored.

Dylan then continued, "Still, it had a different impact compared to comedy or horror. It was a play worth praising, especially since it was written just for a high school production. There was barely any romance, but the way they portrayed the characters' lives was impressive—"

Dylan stopped when he noticed the look Jake was giving him.

"What?"

"I just thought your bloodline is really strong. Even though you're studying to be a doctor, you can still critique a play like that," Jake said with a grin.

Dylan rolled his eyes, "Let's go."

"Wait, since you complimented the play so much, aren't you going to ask that brat about who wrote it?" Jake rushed after him.

"Some other time," Dylan replied, glancing at his phone.

"Oh, was the tutoring rescheduled because I dragged you here?" Jake asked.

Dylan didn't answer and simply walked out of the auditorium. Jake could only follow.

Meanwhile, everyone couldn't stop talking about the play their class had performed. With the effort they put into their props and backdrop, it was no surprise that their class ended up in first place.

Everyone was cheering; they had prepared themselves to be in last place, but who would have thought they would pull through? And what was with their acting?

Those who were part of the play were thrilled with how well they portrayed their characters, while their other classmates couldn't stop complimenting them.

Even Beatrice was cheering for them and was already talking about them joining the drama club.

Luca had just finished changing when his friends rushed over to him.

"Man, are you really a teenager? How could you play that character so well?" Kenneth asked, playfully punching Luca's stomach.

"I hate to admit it, but this showed how talented you are. You're really a jack of all trades," Eugene said, putting his arm around Luca's neck and playfully choking him.

Luca laughed as the rest of their classmates cheered for a job well done.

"Ahem."

They stopped when someone cleared their throat through the mic.

"Class 2, if you please," the principal said, gesturing to the wet stage.

They scratched the back of their heads before one by one picking up their cleaning supplies to wipe down the stage.

As they were cleaning, Luca noticed Harmony looking around.

"Is something wrong?" Luca asked.

Harmony looked at him before shaking her head, "It's nothing."

She rubbed her arms, clearly feeling cold.

"Don't you have a spare change of clothes?" Luca asked.

Harmony looked at him for a moment before he understood the situation, realizing that she had been pulled into the play at the last minute and might not have had time to bring extra clothes.

"Give me a moment," Luca said.

He went over to where his things were before returning with his jacket.

"Wear this for now," he said, draping the jacket over her shoulders before she could protest.

"You should take off your blouse at least," he added, noticing how soaked she was.

Harmony raised an eyebrow.

"I didn't mean anything by it!" Luca quickly waved his hands, trying to explain.

"Now, for the announcement of the results," the principal's voice came through the speakers again, cutting their conversation short.
