Chapter 1 - SHAKTIGARH

Around 400 B.C , there existed a small kingdom, named Shaktigarh in the present day Dooars region of West Bengal in India .

The name Shaktigarh was derived from the founder of the dynasty and the Kingdom, Shaktipada Roy .

The Kingdom was surrounded by the forests and mountains of Dooars , making it a picturesque place to behold.

The lush green forests of Gorumara and Jaldapara were towards the southern border of the Kingdom, while the white mountains of the Himalayas were towards the north of the Kingdom.

The boundaries of the Kingdom extended upto Bindu , after which there was a mountainous river , on the other side of which was Bhutan , though it was not called by that name at that period.

The Kingdom housed about 5000 people, most of whom were engaged in agriculture, while a few were engaged in other professions like cattle rearing , pottery and trade.

The People of the Kingdom were honest and generous.

The fields used to be full of crops , the weather pleasant, the people happy and the King generous and nice .

There were several Temples of different Dieties of which the most magnificent was the Rajeshwari Durga Temple , situated at Chamba , one of the border villages of the Kingdom. It is said that , Maharaja Dev Narayan Roy , the second king of the dynasty had a dream of Goddess Durga during his visit to Chamba. In honour of The Goddess, he built the magnificent Temple in Chamba , just on the foothills of the Himalayas.

Every year during Spring season , there takes place a grand Puja accompanied by a grand Mela that is a fair in Chamba in the Rajeshwari Temple.

The King along with the Royal family visits Chamba during this festival.

The Kingdom was roughly triangular in shape. Roads from the villages met at the four main towns , from where four roads went on to meet at the junction point called the Murti Stambha , where there was a statue of Maharaja Shaktipada Roy, the founder of the Kingdom. From here a big road went on to the capital city and the fort.

The name of the capital city was Kamalpur . There was a lake in the middle of the city full of lotus ..People believe the name Kamalpur, has been derived from it.

The Capital city housed all the important, rich as well as worker class people of the Kingdom. There were big houses of the wealthy people , worker's quarters, big markets , important offices , merchant's clubs , military cantonment in the capital and the fort , where there was the Royal palace and the houses of the ministers.

Shaktigarh was one of the most prosperous Kingdom of Eastern India at that time. It exported Agricultural as well as pottery products to other Kingdoms. It had friendly relations with the neighboring kingdoms except Dhulagarh. Dhulagarh was an arch enemy of Shaktigarh. Dhulagarh had attacked Shaktigarh twice in the past but lost to Shaktigarh both times.

Apart from this Dhulagarh phenomenon, there was peace and prosperity in Shaktigarh and the people lived here happily.
