Chapter 6 - A glimpse into darkness

It was three days later when Ava received the call.

"Ms. Harris," a voice on the other end said, smooth and measured. "I trust you enjoyed the book."

She stiffened, recognizing the voice immediately.

"Alexander," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "I don't know what game you're playing, but this… this is too much."

His laugh was low, a sound that sent a ripple of unease through her. "Game? I don't play games, Ava. I simply… observe."

She clenched her fists, her temper flaring. "And what, exactly, have you been observing?"

"Everything."

The word was soft, yet it held a weight that made her blood run cold.

"I know when you wake up, when you go to sleep. I know what books you're reading, what songs you listen to, what makes you laugh. I know what haunts you, Ava."

Her breath caught in her throat. "That's… that's insane."

"It's not insanity," he said, his voice almost tender now. "It's love. And love doesn't have rules. It doesn't follow boundaries. It just… is."

Ava was silent for a moment, the gravity of his words sinking in. She should have been terrified. She should have hung up, blocked his number, done anything to escape this spiraling madness.

But there was a part of her—one she couldn't ignore—that was drawn to him.

"You don't know anything about me," she said, her voice trembling.

"I know you better than you think," he replied softly.

"And I'll prove it to you."
