Chapter 38 - “Mei!!”

How sharp can human teeth be? At this moment, Shu felt clearly how terrifying the biting force of a human was.

Or rather, a zombie.

"Argh!!" Pain shot through his arm, Shu opened his eyes in terror, and all he could see were the blood-soaked teeth of a zombie, and the blood gushing out of his arm.

Maybe it was his imagination, but he could see a strange green tint in the blood.

I've been bitten… I'm going to die, I'm going to die, I'm going to die!!

Shu had lost his ability to think. He could only struggle desperately and chaotically.

Seeing the other zombie coming at him, Shu's mind suddenly went blank for a split second.

Shu's Brain: [My whole life… has been like walking on thin ice…]

Shu's Body: I'm seeing my life flash before my eyes, arghhhhhh!!!

Shu's Brain: [Ah, it seems like I haven't seen the ending of many shows in my previous life…]

Shu's Body: I told you not to think about those things! Use your invincible brain power to think of a solution!

Shu's Brain: [Shows like JJK, One Piece, Naruto… I only saw Gojo get beaten by Toji in JJK…]

Shu's Body: I told you not to think about it! Wait… What?

In that instant, the fear in Shu's eyes suddenly faded. It was replaced by an immense strength flowing through his body.

Adrenaline: Brothers, I'm here!!!

Shu tightened his hand. He had never felt the presence of the steel pipe in his hand so strongly. It was so strong… that he wanted to use it to ram into the neck of the zombie in front of him!!

"Aaaargh!!!" Shu roared loudly. He tightly gripped the steel pipe and used all his might to swing the broken end, and with all of Shu's might, it pierced straight through the zombie's neck.

In an instant, the zombie seemed to lose all of its strength. It was thrown aside from the force of the attack. Shu kicked the other zombie, which was trying to bite his leg, and then turned, scrambling downstairs. He locked himself in a room.

The moment the door was closed, Shu felt like all of his strength had been drained. He leaned against the wall, collapsing to the ground and desperately gasping for air.

The wound suddenly started to scream its presence. Shu gritted his teeth and shakily raised his arm to check the wound.

It was a large wound. Blood was still gushing out of it. Shu instinctively looked around for anything that he could use to treat the wound.

At this moment, his mind recovered from the fear. But his first thought was, "I got bit. I'm going to become a zombie."

"Damn it... why did this happen?" Shu clenched his teeth, looking at the wound.

In that moment, he thought of many things. Like cutting off his arm right now, or carving out that area of his flesh, or hoping that he was one in a million that had the antibodies…

And then, he remembered that he had managed to pull two zombies from the gamble he just did. Shu's heart sank.

He even felt his eyes well up.

The fear of death was right in front of him, and Shu couldn't handle the weight of it.

Forget the trust, forget the responsibility, I'm done with all of it!

Why did I open the door to that room? Why did I gamble on that small chance of hope?

I'm going to die!!

I'm going to die…

Shu curled up in a ball, hugging his legs. His injured arm was resting limply at his side, hot blood flowing onto the floor.

I'm really going to die… I don't want to die…

I haven't lived for long this time...

Shu buried his face. He felt that he was crying…

"BOOM!!"

The sudden loud sound made Shu jump as if he were a startled bird. He desperately looked for a place to hide.

But there was nothing there. This was an empty room.

And… and…

Shu slowly walked to the window, supporting himself on the window frame, looking blankly outside.

From a distance, he saw the giant Honkai Beast destroying everything in a frenzy. He also saw a white figure jump out of the destroyed building and land on the roof.

The Honkai Beast was still chasing her. She was running ahead. He saw her arm hanging limply at her side.

He saw… Kiana's surprised gaze, and then her actions. She turned around without any hesitation.

"Hey! I'm over here!" Kiana jumped on the roof next door, raised her voice, and shouted at the Honkai Beast. She even kicked a tile and hit the Honkai beast on the head.

Looking back, she could no longer see Shu at the window.

I have to buy more time!

Inside the building, beneath the windowsill, Shu was sitting against the wall, his hands covering his head, curled up in a ball.

The Honkai Beast… its figure, which was somewhat cute in the game, was now terrifying.

As death came closer, Shu finally understood the meaning of [Honkai].

"Haha, it was me who told everyone about the concept, but why am I… the last to start to care about it…" Shu laughed hysterically, and his tears finally started to fall.

The wound on his hand was starting to hurt even more, and the explosions behind him were getting more frequent.

Oh… I'm going to die…

Shu closed his eyes, trying to stop thinking.

But… but!

Was he really okay with that? Shu? Was he really fine with dying?

...[She lay there, the stain of blood marring the pristine white. He reached out, the only way he could, tearing at himself to touch her cold hand…]

[She lay there, the stain of blood marring the pristine white. He reached out, the only way he could, tearing at himself to touch her cold hand…]

[She lay there…]

[Hey, do you… really like watching that scene?]

"Ugh!!" Shu suddenly opened his eyes and slammed his fist against the wall.

"Damn it, who would like something like that!!"

No one responded. It was like no one had asked.

But Shu's heart... calmed down.

"It doesn't matter if I die. I've already died before! What needs to come will come, and whatever is chasing me will come. But right now, I can still do something..."

Shu took a deep breath and stepped out of the room. Then, he mustered all his strength and shouted at the top of his lungs.

"Mei!!!! Where are you!!!"
