The day I had been dreading finally arrived: my first day at Advanced Nurturing High School, the renowned institution known for cultivating the nation's brightest minds. Despite its prestige, I found myself indifferent to it all.
From a young age, I had a natural flair for academics. By the time I was four, I had already mastered what most children wouldn't learn until elementary school. At nearly six, I officially started school, quickly excelling in every subject and outpacing my classmates. That's when I first earned the "born prodigy" label.
While teachers and even parents of other students praised me, this attention had its drawbacks. My classmates began to see me as a barrier to their own achievements, the standard they were unfairly measured against. This led to a lack of friendships in my early years.
Initially, I felt lonely and sad, but things did change. I managed to form a couple of friendships during elementary school with peers who shared my love for reading and matched my academic enthusiasm. These friendships were rare, but they were based on shared interests and mutual respect.
Over time, I adapted to the broader social dynamics. Instead of being sidelined, I started to distance myself, finding solace in solitude. I came to enjoy my own company more than being around others. My parents called this behavior "anti-social."
I was also naturally gifted in sports, having fun with football and basketball. But eventually, these activities lost their charm due to the social interactions they required, interactions I wasn't particularly fond of.
My family, wealthy and influential, always ensured I had the best opportunities. They provided me with tutors for everything I wanted to learn, from music to karate, or any sport I fancied. With my talent, it never took me long to master these skills. This constant learning and growth were what I valued, choosing to do what I wanted, when I wanted. This mindset was my guiding principle, and it would continue to shape my future.
My isolation and limited friendships were among the reasons I was sent to this specialized high school. A relative suggested to my mother that it would be the ideal place for someone like me, promising to nurture my academic and athletic talents while encouraging social growth.
Despite my family's hopes, I wasn't completely against socializing. I would welcome connections with those who shared my interests and passions. If I met someone who enjoyed reading or excelled academically like I did, I'd be open to friendship.
Even now, if asked, I'd say I'm content with who I am, willing to connect with like-minded individuals but not eager to change just for the sake of it.
I will do what I want, no matter what, that's my promise to myself.
