Chapter 10: Into the Abyss
The power that surged within Xia Yu was both intoxicating and terrifying. Her body burned with an intensity she had never experienced, her veins alight with the searing heat of the crystal vial's contents. Her Qi was no longer her own; it had merged with something darker, something far beyond her control.
Epoch's voice came through her thoughts, strained and anxious. "Host, your Qi is unstable. You've bound yourself to forces that are ancient and dangerous. You must regain control, or you risk losing yourself."
But Xia Yu could barely hear the warning. The world around her was a blur of colors and shapes, her senses overwhelmed by the power flooding her. The figures before her—her enemies—paused, their eyes wide in astonishment at the ferocity of the energy radiating from her.
The leader of the group, a man with cold eyes and a cruel smile, took a step forward, his voice low but laced with menace. "You've made your choice, Xia Yu. But know this—you've just made yourself a target of those who dwell in the shadows. You will regret this."
Xia Yu's breath was ragged, but her gaze remained unyielding. She could feel the raw energy within her, and though it was wild, there was a certain exhilaration in it. She wasn't the one being hunted anymore—she was the hunter.
With a swift motion, she raised her hand, her Qi crackling like lightning. The ground beneath her feet trembled as a burst of energy erupted from her, slamming into the advancing figures. The leader was thrown backward, his cloak swirling like a shadow, but the others were quicker, their movements precise, as they dodged the blast with uncanny ease.
Epoch's voice cut through the chaos. "Host, they are too skilled. You cannot defeat them all at once. You must focus."
Xia Yu's chest heaved as she tried to steady her breathing, her mind racing. Her body was still overwhelmed by the dark power, but she could feel her control slipping. She needed to act quickly before the energy consumed her entirely.
The figures regrouped, their faces now showing wariness, but the hunger for battle in their eyes was unmistakable. They knew she was dangerous, but they had no intention of retreating. The leader raised his hand again, and this time, a powerful wave of energy surged toward Xia Yu, faster and more lethal than the last.
Without thinking, Xia Yu summoned the full force of the energy inside her, her own Qi intertwining with the dark force that had taken root within her. She thrust her hand forward, and the two opposing forces collided in a thunderous explosion. The shockwave ripped through the landscape, sending debris flying and leaving the air thick with dust.
When the dust settled, Xia Yu's knees buckled, and she collapsed onto the ground. The power had drained her, and the dark force within her twisted and writhed, pulling at her very essence. She gasped for air, her body trembling, but she forced herself to stand. She couldn't afford to collapse now—not when so much was at stake.
The figures watched her, and the leader's voice was filled with dark amusement. "You've learned the price of power, Xia Yu. The forces you've bound yourself to do not forgive. They will exact their toll."
Xia Yu's eyes narrowed. Her vision blurred with exhaustion, but her will remained as sharp as ever. She could feel the dark power gnawing at her mind, but she would not let it break her. She would not become a puppet to whatever malevolent force she had unleashed.
"Then I'll pay the price," she said through gritted teeth. "But I will not bow to you."
With a roar, she surged forward, her sword drawn in a blur of motion. The figures scattered, but the leader stood his ground, raising his hand once more to unleash another wave of energy.
But this time, Xia Yu was ready. With a swift motion, she sliced through the air, her sword cutting through the energy like a blade through silk. The attack dissipated, and with a final, powerful swing, she struck at the leader.
He barely managed to raise his own sword in time to parry the blow, the impact sending a shockwave through the air. His eyes widened, his expression now a mixture of surprise and respect.
"Impressive," he muttered. "But it's not enough."
Xia Yu's heart raced, her body on the edge of collapse. She could feel the dark energy within her, clawing at her, urging her to unleash more, to give in to the power. But she fought it back with every ounce of strength she had.
Epoch's voice rang out in her mind, filled with urgency. "Host, you cannot continue like this. The energy within you is unstable. You must find a way to regain control or it will consume you."
But Xia Yu had no intention of stopping. She had made her choice, and now she would face the consequences, regardless of the toll it took on her.
With a final, desperate cry, she unleashed all her remaining power in a single, devastating strike. The energy around her flared, a massive burst of raw force that sent the figures flying backward, crashing into the rocks.
For a moment, there was silence. The figures lay scattered, their forms motionless. Xia Yu stood alone in the aftermath, her body trembling, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She had won—this time.
But the victory felt hollow. The dark energy still pulsed within her, a constant, gnawing presence. She had survived the battle, but she knew the price she had paid. She had embraced the shadows, and now they were a part of her.
Epoch's voice came through once more, softer now, almost sympathetic. "Host, you have made a dangerous choice. The path you walk is fraught with peril, and the consequences of your actions will not be easy to bear."
Xia Yu stood tall, despite the exhaustion weighing heavily on her. "I've faced worse," she said, her voice firm. "And I'll face whatever comes next."
The storm was not over. The path ahead would be darker, more treacherous, but Xia Yu was no longer afraid. She had taken the first step into the abyss—and she would carve her own way out.
