Chapter 65 - Ichor of eternal sin

"How come? There are countless calibres with self-regeneration. What makes him different?" Yurina questioned, adjusting her glasses. Roland let go of Satoya's face, then gripped his neck tightly, almost strangling him. "Of the billions of calibres that manifested into people, only two have the ability to manipulate the absolute form of energy itself. Takeru killed the other." Roland's voice was chaotic as Satoya struggled to breathe. The pace at which his sliced-off arm regenerated became alarmingly faster.

Satoya's arm fully regenerated, and he conjured his katana, slashing Roland in the chest. Despite the lethal amount of blood dripping onto the floor from Roland's wound, his grip on Satoya's neck remained firm, and he stayed indifferent. Roland finally let go of Satoya's neck. "No one can kill me, not even the highest combat authority of the VHC, the elite ranks," he laughed cryptically.

"Out of the ten past—" Roland was interrupted by a phone call. Satoya caught a brief glimpse of the screen, but the blood stains obscured the message. Roland then instructed Yurina to chain Satoya's freed arm against the wall and walked calmly to the corner of the test chamber.

After a couple of minutes of deep silence, Roland sighed. Though Satoya couldn't hear Roland's conversation, his mind raced with questions: "Why can't a VHC elite rank kill him?" and "What was he trying to say before he got interrupted?"

As Roland walked out of the experiment chamber, Satoya saw what looked like a person, disfigured by numerous experiments. The person's screams were loud enough for Satoya to hear, making out the words, "Free! Want free!" Roland threw a scalpel at the morbid lump on top of the torso, presumably the head, silencing the cries.

Satoya tried to see more, but the steel door closed shut. "What was that?" he demanded, removing his earplugs. "That was someone captured by Roland last year. He has undergone 492 experiments," Yurina answered, sitting next to the chained Satoya.

"What experiments has Roland done?" Satoya asked. Silence filled the chamber before Yurina revealed, "There's a family of four in another chamber across the laboratory." She sighed, her tone becoming more depressing. "According to Roland, this family has been in an eternal cycle for 985 years."

"The experiment is called the endless familial massacre," she revealed, recalling the morbid scene of flesh, blood, and other bodily matter scattered everywhere, accompanied by grotesque screams.

"I read it in a log in his office. Roland injected the family—a mother, father, daughter, and son, aged 17 and 18—with a substance that induces bloodlust, targeting only the nervous system while leaving the brain untouched. He then injected a serum of immortality, which he calls the ichor of eternal sin," she explained, staring through a one-sided mirror. "This forces the family's wounds to heal instantly, yet they can still feel the pain. They are locked in a nightmare where every attempt to break free from the bloodlust or prevent the 'death' of their family members is futile."

"The worst part is, it's his own family, with other relatives in separate chambers." Yurina shook her head. "I had no choice but to get used to it after I started working for him. Despite my attempts to free those who were still sane, Roland would push me aside and perform the experiments himself, with a childish smile."
