Chapter 16 - Moral ambiguity

Minute after minute, hour after hour continued to pass, and Dawn continued to wander around aimlessly like a lost chicken.

During this time, his face hidden behind the sturdy but comfortable mask turned ugly at the sight he saw.

Bones after bones, piled into small mountains, filled the space of these dark caves—a grim reminder of the situation those hopeful and aspiring humans must have faced.

Although these people had nothing to do with Dawn, even then his eyes turned a little moist and his heart grew heavy. Unconsciously, the thought that he might turn into one of these empty carcasses lying on the side frightened him a little.

"Why are you even here? What is the need to explore this cold and dark place?"

"Why not comfortably live another eighteen years like everyone else?"

The more brutality Dawn witnessed, the more thoughts like this popped up in his head, making him question his decision.

Unlike others, he could come and leave this place at his own will, so why not just wait until he was eighteen? Why risk his life?

"No, no, no... this thinking is wrong!" Dawn hurriedly shook his head to get rid of these mediocre thoughts.

The situation in the real world was complicated. The fact that he was the bearer of Abyss marks and he couldn't even rely on his family now that he had seen their true colors meant he couldn't count on them.

A man had to take some amount of risk for his own survival and become independent.

Thinking up to this point, Dawn's eyes became slightly cold and he suddenly raised his hand and slapped himself.

"Fuck you, bitch! Don't you know what is good for yourself?"

"How can you even think about hiding behind four walls of a family room that can disappear at any moment like a coward?"

Once his thoughts were clear, Dawn realized how close he was to following a path of mediocrity.

Just as he was reviewing his decisions, "Huh!" Dawn ears suddenly twitched, he heard faint shout of someone in the distance.

"Someone save me!!"

Just then, a blood-curdling scream came from ahead, followed by the sound of panicked footsteps.

Someone was rushing in his direction at fast speed.

Dawn's eyes immediately turned vigilant and without hesitating, his body started to gain altitude, but how high he could go depended on the cave's ceiling.

So he stopped when he was just a few meters above the ground.

Dawn's eyes narrowed as he peered into the distance. Immediately, he noticed a man running in his direction completely naked; the man's entire figure was soaked in crimson blood.

Their eyes met. Noticing Dawn, the man's steps became even more frantic and a strange look seemed to have appeared in his eyes.

Dawn, however, after giving him one look, immediately turned his gaze away and looked at the monsters chasing the blood-covered guy from behind.

Behind the guy were two Nether Wraiths, chasing the man, with strange spear-like objects in their hands. On one spear, a figure of a naked woman hung down lifelessly.

Their smoky form writhed and twisted like evil spirits.

The two Nether Wraiths conversed among themselves, while letting out maniacal laughter.

"How dare this stupid human destroy our corps?"

The Nether Wraiths' eyes filled with untamed savagery as they trailed behind at a leisurely pace.

Listening to the Nether Wraiths' words, the man's eyes shook. He gritted his teeth and let out a call for help filled with desperation.

"Please save me, I beg you."

Listening to the pleading for help, Dawn's heart was moved for a moment; however, soon he shook his head.

The blood covering the man's body definitely wasn't his. Dawn had long realized this man was no saint that needed saving.

Thinking up to this point, he ignored the guy and focused on the two Nether Wraiths behind him while narrowing his eyes.

His Superhero Danger sense skill didn't react, meaning the threat posed by these monsters to him wasn't much.

He was immediately relieved in his heart but didn't let down his vigilance. After all, in a place as dangerous as the Eternal Battlefield, one moment of negligence could lead to death in no time.

"Argh!"

While Dawn was pondering, one of the Nether Wraiths threw his bony spear towards the man. It flew through the air like an arrow and pierced the man's body, pinning him to the ground.

The man's lungs immediately collapsed; he barely let out a scream before dying.

"Hehe... These humans are no fun; they die so quickly."

"Tch! What do you expect from a race which is meant to be raised as livestock."

The two Nether Wraiths conversed among themselves and mocked the dead man, while completely ignoring Dawn who was silently floating in the distance as if he posed no threat at all.

Dawn also didn't move but looked intently at the man's lifeless body, blood dripping out of his mouth, falling onto the ground slowly painting the cold and damp floor crimson red.

However, in the next moment, the man's body started to scatter like the Nether Wraith he had previously killed.

Soon the man's body turned into hundreds of thousands of glowing mana particles, leaving behind a glowing crystal that fell to the ground.

Clink!

Dawn felt almost unsettlingly calm watching this scene, as if he hadn't just witnessed the death of a fellow human being but an ant whose life had no meaning.

He felt like one of those children who would calmly walk away after destroying a colony of ants.

The Nether Wraiths, after mocking, moved closer while snickering together.

"Come here, boy, and accept your death," the Nether Wraith on the left spoke in a cheerful tone.

"Brother, why is this human so tiny..." The Nether Wraith on the right, who looked slightly more intelligent, asked in puzzlement.

The left-side Nether Wraith was annoyed by his fellow's inquiry and spat in an angry tone, "What do you even expect from a bunch of weaklings..."

The monster was about to continue when he noticed his companion had suddenly gone silent. Feeling something was amiss, he turned his smoky head to focus on the floating glowing human above.

Immediately, his smoky form shivered and started to scatter in fear as if he had seen something ghastly.

In mid-air, Dawn's eyes had turned into two red rubies, glowing ominously with scorching crimson light.

"Nine Abyss Laser eyes!!"
