Chapter 28 - Chapter 28 - Bloody Forest

The forest's darkness pulsed with an ominous energy, the trees seeming to hum with latent power. Captain Alvar and his soldiers moved cautiously through the dense underbrush, their senses heightened and their weapons at the ready. Each man's aura shimmered faintly, a testament to their training and their bond as a unit.

"Stay close," Alvar ordered, his voice low but commanding. His piercing blue eyes glowed faintly, an aura of determination radiating from him. The squad tightened their formation, their steps synchronized as the faint hum of a protective ward encircled them.

....

Max crouched high in the canopy, his crimson eyes glinting as he watched the patrol pass beneath him. His enhanced senses picked up the faint thrumming of their defensive formation, a shimmering barrier that shielded them from immediate threats.

'They're trained,' Max noted, his gaze narrowing. 'But something's coming.'

The air grew heavier as a guttural growl echoed through the forest. The soldiers halted, their weapons raised as the energy in their formation intensified. Alvar's aura flared brighter, a deep cobalt hue that signified his role as the anchor of their defense.

"Eyes up," Alvar commanded. The growl deepened, and a ripple of unnatural energy surged through the air. From the shadows emerged a hulking beast, its fur bristling with dark, pulsating veins of corrupted energy. Its yellow eyes glowed with malevolence as its claws scraped the ground, leaving scorched marks in the soil.

"It's tainted," one soldier murmured, his voice trembling. "A beast touched by the Abyss."

Alvar stepped forward, his sword blazing with a brilliant blue flame. The runes etched into its blade glowed as they absorbed and amplified his aura. "Formation Aegis!" he barked.

The soldiers moved as one, their combined auras merging into a barrier of shimmering light. The beast roared, the sound reverberating through the clearing. It lunged, its claws striking the barrier with a force that sent shockwaves rippling outward.

"Hold!" Alvar shouted. The soldiers gritted their teeth, their auras straining as they held the line. One soldier stepped forward, his hands weaving a sigil in the air. A bolt of golden energy shot from the sigil, striking the beast in the shoulder and forcing it back.

Max watched from above, his crimson eyes glinting. 'This isn't just brute force,' he thought, impressed. 'They're using tactics and aura manipulation. But can they handle what's coming?'

The beast recovered quickly, its body radiating a dark mist that corroded the ground beneath it. Alvar's eyes narrowed as he activated his personal aura, a blazing shield that absorbed the corrosive energy.

"Offense formation! Mages, target the limbs!" Alvar commanded. Two soldiers stepped forward, their hands glowing with arcane energy as they unleashed a barrage of attacks. Fire and lightning danced across the clearing, striking the beast and searing its flesh. The remaining soldiers moved in unison, their weapons glowing with imbued power as they aimed for the creature's vitals.

The beast roared, its movements frantic as it countered. One soldier's shield shattered under a devastating swipe, and he was thrown back, his aura flickering dangerously. Alvar surged forward, his blade cutting through the beast's corrupted flesh with a precise strike. The runes flared brighter, purging the Abyssal energy with each blow.

....

From his vantage point, Max felt a chill run down his spine. The beast's aura was chaotic, its movements fueled by desperation. But Alvar's was something else entirely. The captain's every action was deliberate, his aura burning with disciplined intensity.

'He's more than just strong,' Max realized. 'He's experienced. Dangerous.'

With a final, devastating strike, Alvar drove his sword deep into the beast's chest. The runes erupted in a cascade of light, and the creature let out a final, guttural howl before collapsing. The forest fell silent, the oppressive energy dissipating.

...

The soldiers regrouped, their breathing heavy but their auras steadying. Alvar knelt beside the fallen beast, his hand resting on its matted fur.

"This thing caused the disturbances," he said, though his tone was cautious. "But it's not the only threat here."

Before he could elaborate, the air shifted. A faint ripple of energy spread through the clearing, followed by the sound of footsteps. Alvar stood, his sword at the ready, as cloaked figures emerged from the shadows. Their auras crackled with malevolence, each one a different hue of dark energy. At their center was a tall woman with short, dark hair and piercing gray eyes. Her aura was cold and oppressive, a swirling mass of shadow and ice.

"You've done well," she said, her voice smooth but venomous. "But this ends now."

Alvar's grip tightened on his sword. "Who are you?"

The woman's smirk was chilling. "We are the architects of this forest's secrets. And you, Captain, are an inconvenience." She raised her hand, and the cloaked figures spread out, their auras flaring as weapons were drawn.

"Form up!" Alvar commanded. His soldiers moved swiftly, their combined aura forming a protective dome around them. The agents struck with deadly precision, their attacks targeting weak points in the formation. The clearing erupted into chaos, light clashing with shadow as the two sides fought for dominance.

Max crouched deeper into the shadows, his eyes wide as he watched the battle unfold. The agents moved with supernatural speed, their strikes enhanced by spells and runes. Alvar and his men countered with practiced formations, their synergy keeping them alive.

The woman watched impassively, her aura intensifying as she prepared to enter the fray. When she finally moved, it was with terrifying grace. Her blade, wreathed in ice, clashed against Alvar's flaming sword in a burst of energy that shook the ground.

Their duel was a spectacle of power. Alvar's strikes were heavy and deliberate, each one designed to break through her defenses. She countered with fluid precision, her blade leaving trails of frost that sapped the heat from his aura.

Max's heart raced as he watched. The sheer scale of their power left him in awe. 'This is what real strength looks like,' he thought, his fists clenching. 'I'm nothing compared to them. Not yet.'

The battle raged on, blood staining the ground as both sides suffered losses. The soldiers fought valiantly, their auras flickering as exhaustion set in. Alvar and the woman were locked in a deadly dance, neither willing to yield.

In a final, desperate move, Alvar feinted, drawing the woman into a trap. His blade flared brilliantly as he struck, but she twisted at the last moment, her blade slicing across his chest. Both combatants staggered, their auras dimming as blood dripped onto the forest ground.

The clearing fell silent, the remaining agents retreating as their leader held up a hand. Her cold eyes met Alvar's, a faint smirk on her bloodied lips. "This isn't over," she said, before vanishing into the shadows with her surviving agents.

Max remained hidden, his thoughts racing. The battle had shaken him, but it also ignited a fire within. He would grow stronger—strong enough to one day stand on equal footing with the likes of Alvar and the woman. 'No, I will crush them all and be above everyone in the world, although no, I will rule over the universe!' Max thought with determination in his eyes.

"Baby steps, baby steps Max. This is only the beginning," Max murmured, retreating deeper into the forest as dawn began to break.
