Chapter 15 - Beginning of the web

It was a beautiful morning, and Chris woke up with a plan. He had been thinking about Lucinda nonstop since their last encounter, and he was determined to make things right. He arranged a bouquet of flowers, cooked her favorite breakfast, and headed to her house.

When Chris arrived at Lucinda's house, she was shocked to see him. She hadn't expected him to show up, especially not after everything that had happened. But as she looked into his eyes, she saw something there that gave her pause. She welcomed him in, still wary but willing to listen.

As they sat down at the table, Chris began to speak. But before he could get far, Lucinda cut him off. "Chris, I don't want to hear it," she said, her voice firm. "There's no explanation for what you and Des did. Keeping it a secret from me was bad enough, but what you did... I don't even want to think about it."

Chris took a deep breath and launched into his explanation. "Lucinda, please listen to me. I know what Des and I did was wrong, but I want you to understand the circumstances. Des was the one who influenced me to engage in those activities. He was the one with the money and the power, and I was just a poor kid who didn't know any better."

Lucinda's expression softened slightly as she listened to Chris's words. She could see the sincerity in his eyes, and she began to understand that he wasn't the only one at fault.

"Des was the one who quoted me, not the other way around," Chris continued. "He was the one who wanted bigger things, and I was just along for the ride. I know it's no excuse, but I hope you can see that I'm not the monster you think I am."

As Chris finished speaking, Lucinda looked at him with newfound understanding. She could see the regret in his eyes, and she believed him. But as she thought about Des's role in everything, her expression hardened.

"I believe you, Chris," she said. "But Des... he's a different story altogether. I don't know if I can ever forgive him for what he did."

Lucinda's expression softened as she accepted the gift from Chris - a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a delicious breakfast spread. She smiled warmly at him and invited him to sit down while she went to prepare a meal for them to enjoy together.

As they sat down to eat, Chris couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over him. At least he hadn't lost Lucinda completely. He reached out and took her hand, his eyes filled with regret.

"Lucinda, I'm so sorry for everything," he said, his voice filled with emotion. "I know I can never make up for what happened, but I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive Des. He's not a bad person, he was just... lost."

Lucinda's expression hardened, and she pulled her hand away from Chris. "I'm sorry, Chris," she said, her voice firm. "But my mind is made up. Des will never be welcome in my life again. From now on, the only people I'll be interacting with are you, Ody, and Stella. That's my final decision."

Chris felt a pang of disappointment, but he knew he couldn't blame Lucinda for feeling the way she did. He nodded, accepting her decision.

"I understand, Lucinda," he said. "And I'll respect your boundaries. But please know that I'll always be here for you, no matter what."

Lucinda smiled softly, and Chris could see a glimmer of the old Lucinda in her eyes. "Thank you, Chris," she said. "That means a lot to me."
