The air within the crevice was damp and heavy, the scent of sulfur lingering as Eryon and Tia leaned against the cool stone walls. The faint glow of the Shard of Flame illuminated the narrow passage, casting long, flickering shadows. They were safe, at least for the moment, but Eryon couldn't shake the sensation that they were being watched.
"That thing," Tia said, her voice still shaking, "was it one of the guardians Kael talked about?"
Eryon nodded, wiping sweat from his brow. "I think so. If it's here, then the Shard of Earth must be close."
"Close?" Tia echoed, glancing at the dark path ahead. "I hope it's worth it. That… thing nearly crushed us."
Eryon gave her a reassuring look, though doubt gnawed at the edges of his resolve. "It has to be. Without the shards, we have no chance against the Void."
Tia nodded reluctantly, gripping her dagger tighter. "Then let's find it before something else finds us."
The crevice twisted and turned, leading them deeper into the heart of the mountain. The oppressive heat grew with every step, and the walls seemed to pulse faintly, as though the mountain itself were alive. The Shard of Flame in Eryon's hand glowed brighter with each step, guiding them forward like a beacon.
Finally, the narrow passage opened into a vast cavern. Eryon and Tia stopped in their tracks, their eyes widening at the sight before them.
The cavern's walls were studded with crystals of every size and hue, glowing faintly with an otherworldly light. At the center of the cavern was a massive stone platform, carved with intricate patterns that seemed to shift and writhe like living things. Floating above the platform was the Shard of Earth, a jagged, emerald-green crystal that radiated a powerful, ancient energy.
But they weren't alone.
Standing between them and the platform was the guardian from before, its molten veins pulsing angrily as it turned to face them. This time, it wasn't alone. Smaller creatures made of stone and magma crawled along the cavern floor, their glowing eyes fixed on the intruders.
Tia's breath caught in her throat. "We can't fight all of them!"
Eryon gritted his teeth, the Shard of Flame pulsing in his hand as if responding to his rising fear. "We don't have a choice. Stay close to me."
The first of the smaller creatures lunged at them, its jagged claws tearing through the air. Eryon raised the shard, unleashing a stream of fire that engulfed the creature. It screeched, collapsing into a heap of smoldering rubble.
Another creature charged at Tia. She ducked under its swing and plunged her dagger into a glowing fissure in its chest. The creature shuddered before crumbling to pieces.
"Good hit!" Eryon called out, but his relief was short-lived. The guardian roared, its molten veins glowing brighter as it pounded the ground with its massive fists. The cavern shook, sending cracks spidering through the stone floor.
Eryon stumbled, narrowly avoiding a falling stalactite. "We need to get to the shard!"
"I'm open to ideas!" Tia shouted, dodging another creature's attack.
The guardian raised both arms, summoning a wave of molten rock that surged across the cavern floor. Eryon grabbed Tia's arm and pulled her aside, the molten wave missing them by inches.
"Keep moving!" he shouted, his eyes fixed on the platform.
The shard pulsed brighter, its energy calling to him. Eryon could feel the bond between the shards growing stronger, urging him forward.
As they ran, the guardian turned its focus on Eryon. It roared, a column of molten rock erupting in his path. He raised the Shard of Flame, using its energy to create a protective barrier of fire. The molten rock collided with the barrier, splashing harmlessly to the sides.
Tia took the opportunity to slip past the smaller creatures, her small frame allowing her to weave through the chaos. She reached the base of the platform and began to climb, her dagger tucked into her belt.
"Eryon, I'll get the shard!" she called out.
"No!" he shouted, but it was too late.
The guardian's eyes locked onto Tia as she climbed, its molten veins flaring with anger. It raised one massive fist, preparing to strike.
Eryon's heart raced. He didn't think—he acted. With a surge of power, he unleashed a torrent of flames at the guardian's arm. The attack struck true, forcing the creature to stagger back.
"Tia, hurry!" he shouted, his voice strained.
Tia reached the top of the platform, her breath coming in gasps. The Shard of Earth floated just within reach, its energy almost overwhelming. She extended her hand, her fingers brushing against the shard's surface.
The moment her hand closed around the shard, a shockwave rippled through the cavern. The guardian froze, its molten veins dimming. The smaller creatures crumbled to dust, their forms unable to withstand the shard's power.
Tia climbed down from the platform, the Shard of Earth clutched tightly in her hand. Its green glow seemed to resonate with the Shard of Flame, the two shards pulsing in harmony.
Eryon ran to her, his relief evident. "Are you okay?"
She nodded, though her hands trembled. "I think so. This thing… it feels alive."
He placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You did great."
The guardian, weakened but still standing, let out a final, mournful roar before retreating into the shadows of the cavern. The mountain seemed to sigh, its oppressive energy fading.
Eryon and Tia stood in the silence, the two shards glowing faintly in their hands.
"We did it," Tia said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Eryon nodded, though he knew their journey was far from over. The shards were only the beginning. The Void's forces would stop at nothing to claim them, and the trials ahead would only grow more difficult.
"Let's get out of here," he said, guiding her back toward the crevice.
As they stepped out into the cool night air, Eryon couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. Somewhere in the distance, a pair of glowing eyes flickered before vanishing into the darkness.
The battle for the shards had only just begun.
