Chapter 10 - Move like a phantom

The dim light of flickering candles illuminated the hidden room, tucked away in the far corners of the castle.

This was a place few would ever think to look, a quiet sanctuary for Princess Seraphina Lumastra or rather, the soul of Minseok Lee, who had started to adjust to his new body.

Here, far from prying eyes, he could focus on his true mission: providing affordable, life-saving medicine to the common folk.

His mind was sharp, his hands swift as he wrote, the knowledge of healing he had gained from his previous life now being put to use for the benefit of others.

Lady Elira Lysandra stood nearby, her presence more supportive than ever, her brow furrowed with concern as she reviewed the herbs and notes scattered across the table.

Though she had once been a distant and somewhat adversarial noblewoman, she had quickly become an invaluable ally in Minseok's mission.

Their conversation the night before had secured him a powerful ally.

"Your Highness," Elira said, breaking the silence.

"The next shipment of herbs will arrive soon. But we have to be careful. Word is spreading, and some of the nobles are beginning to talk"

Minseok's eyes flicked up to meet hers, his expression unreadable.

"I know," he said, his voice steady.

"That's exactly why we need to stay hidden. No one can know the truth at least not yet"

Elira nodded, her gaze moving from the jars of dried herbs to the carefully written notes Minseok had compiled.

"It's not just the nobles who are talking. I've heard whispers about Lady Verena. She's already making inquiries into the medicine, trying to trace where it's coming from"

"..."

Minseok's jaw tightened at the mention of Lady Verena, the noblewoman who had always been a thorn in Seraphina's side.

And his as well, the conversation they had the day before left a salty taste in his mouth.

It seems that Verena now had her eyes set on exposing the underground medicine network Minseok had begun to build.

"We cannot allow her to find us," Minseok said, his voice cold with resolve.

"If she connects these shipments to me, it'll all be over"

Elira looked at him with a mixture of admiration and concern.

"What do you suggest, then? We can't keep hiding in the shadows forever"

Minseok took a deep breath, thinking through the possibilities.

"We keep moving forward. We must make sure the shipments stay hidden so that no one knows how these medicines are reaching the people"

"And if Lady Verena pushes too hard... then we'll need to take more drastic measures"

Elira's eyes darkened, understanding the weight of what Minseok was saying.

"And the king? What will he do when he finds out?"

The thought of King Feran Aldric Lumastra made Minseok's stomach churn.

'That bastard only thinks of me as a pawn…'

"I'll play my part," Minseok said with quiet determination, "and let him believe whatever he wants"

"If he thinks I'm still obsessed with the throne, it will keep him distracted. He'll never suspect what I'm really doing"

Elira raised an eyebrow, skepticism flickering in her gaze.

"You're playing a dangerous game, Seraphina. The king's eyes are sharp"

Minseok nodded, a small chuckle escaping her lips.

"I know. But as long as I keep him thinking I'm focused on my position here, I can move under the radar. The people need me, and they need the medicine. I won't stop now"

Elira crossed her arms, her expression turning thoughtful.

"You believe you can change things?"

"I have no choice," Minseok said quietly, his voice unwavering.

"If we succeed in this, we can shift the balance of power. The people will see that they don't need to rely on the whims of the nobility for survival"

"And once they realize that, they'll rise"

The weight of his words hung in the air.

Minseok knew that his actions would eventually provoke a response from the nobility.

When that day came, there would be no turning back.

But if he could change the way the kingdom viewed power, if he could make the people realize their own strength, it would be worth the risk.

Or at least something to push them to not accept such bullshit rules.

"Then we move forward," Elira said, her voice resolute.

"I'll help you with the shipments. But you need to be careful. Lady Verena won't back down easily"

"I know," Minseok replied.

"But we have to keep our focus. The nobles can't control everything. Not anymore"

As Elira gathered the supplies for the next shipment, Minseok turned his attention to the window, his gaze lingering on the distant horizon.

The future was uncertain, but he could feel the momentum building.

The kingdom, for all its pomp and circumstance, was standing on the edge of a quiet revolution.

And Minseok… Seraphina would be at the heart of it.

- A couple of hours later -

The silence in the room was broken only by the soft rustling of papers and the occasional clink of glass vials.

Outside, the sun began to dip behind the distant mountains, casting long shadows over the palace grounds.

Minseok watched the light fade, a reminder of how little time they had before the nobles' suspicions grew too strong.

Elira finished organizing the final batch of medicine, her hands steady despite the danger that loomed over them.

She handed Minseok a small vial filled with a vibrant green liquid, one of the more potent potions that could help treat various illnesses.

"This is ready"

"The next delivery will be more crucial than ever. The people are starting to rely on it to help them"

Minseok took the vial, his fingers brushing against hers for just a moment.

It was a fleeting touch, but it felt like a quiet reminder of how far they'd come.

They were no longer just two individuals caught in the web of palace intrigue, they were partners in a cause that could change the fate of the kingdom.

"I'll make sure the distribution network is set up for tonight," Minseok replied, tucking the vial into a small leather pouch.

"Make sure to keep the routes secure. We can't risk being traced back to the palace"

Elira nodded, her expression softening with understanding.

"And if anyone asks…?"

Minseok's gaze hardened.

"Tell them you're doing it for the good of the kingdom"

"Tell them that we're helping the people. If anyone questions the legitimacy of our actions, remind them that the king himself has failed to ensure their well-being"

The words came easily now, a reflection of the conviction he'd gained through the course of his actions.

In this new life, the Princess, Seraphina had become more than just a symbol of royal duty, she was the vessel for something greater.

But Elira's face remained pensive.

"And what about Lady Verena? You know she won't stop digging. She'll come after you the moment she's certain there's something behind all this"

Minseok sighed, taking a deep breath as he ran a hand through his hair.

"Let her. If she exposes me, I'll confront her head-on. We can't keep hiding forever"

"But until then, we need to keep the focus on what matters: the medicine, and the people we're helping"

Elira's eyes sharpened.

"Always with the dangerous games, Seraphina"

"Need I remind you that if Verena unravels this, not only will your royal identity be at risk, but everything we've worked for will come crashing down"

Minseok looked at her, his eyes reflecting the same fire that had ignited within her.

"That's why we have to move fast. And when the time comes to confront Verena, we do so on our terms. I won't let her tear this down"

There was a long silence between them, but it wasn't uncomfortable.

It was a silence filled with the weight of understanding, the stakes they were both playing for.

"Then we continue," Elira said finally, her voice resolute.

"But Seraphina... if the king starts noticing the shift, we'll need to prepare for more than just Lady Verena"

"You know he'll take drastic measures to preserve his control"

Minseok's eyes darkened at the mention of his father.

'Yeah, I have already seen it first hand, how cold and cruel that old bastard can be'

But there was no turning back now.

Not when the lives of so many depended on what he was doing.

"Once again, I'll deal with it, no need to worry anymore"

With one last look at the medicine and plans they had laid out, Minseok turned to Elira.

"Tonight, we move forward. The kingdom might not be ready for the change, but it's coming whether they like it or not"

Elira gave him a slight smile, her confidence matching his own.

"And when it comes, we'll be ready"

As Minseok stepped into the shadows of the corridor, his heart pounded with anticipation.

Every move he made in this hidden rebellion was a risk, and yet, it felt more necessary than ever.

He wasn't just fighting for redemption; he was fighting for a better future, for a kingdom that could no longer ignore the suffering of its people.

The clock was ticking, and the storm that loomed on the horizon was inevitable.

But Seraphina, no, Minseok would not back down.

And when the time came for the nobles to react, they would find that they were facing something far more dangerous than they could have imagined.

A revolution born from the shadows.

The air in the palace had grown heavier as the days passed.

Every conversation, every glance, felt like it held the weight of secrets and impending consequences.

Minseok, still pretending to be the aloof and distant Princess Seraphina, walked the fine line between maintaining his royal image and orchestrating the quiet revolution that was gaining momentum beneath the surface.

His eyes scanned the palace corridors as he moved through them with practiced grace.

The weight of the crown that had once been a symbol of power now felt like a constant reminder of the kingdom's coldness, its indifference to the suffering of its people.

The war had helped show him how little they thought about support, that the lives of those who fought only mattered on the battlefield.

And with every step he took, the fire inside him grew stronger.

He wasn't just a princess or Minseok anymore, he was the spark that could ignite a change.

As he approached the royal chambers, he was intercepted by Captain Reiner, who he had not seen since the end of the war.

The captain's expression was unreadable, but there was a flicker of something else in his eyes.

"Your Highness," Reiner greeted, bowing with the respect expected of him, but there was a tension in his voice that Minseok couldn't ignore.

'Is he still mad at how I treated the others?'

'I'll apologise later'

"Captain," Minseok replied, keeping his tone detached.

"What news do you bring?"

Reiner's jaw tightened slightly.

"There's been a disturbance in the city. A crowd has gathered near the gates, demanding medicine"

"Word of your... actions has reached the streets faster than expected. They're calling for more of the healing potions, more of the remedies"

Minseok's heart skipped a beat.

The time had come.

The people were finally waking up to the fact that they no longer needed to beg at the feet of the nobility for help.

But this was also dangerous, riots could erupt, and if the wrong people caught wind of it, everything could unravel.

"How large is the crowd?"

Minseok asked, his voice steady despite the surge of anxiety within him.

"Large enough that the city guards are concerned," Reiner replied.

"They've sent word to the palace, asking for your presence. They believe it's only a matter of time before unrest spills over"

Minseok's gaze hardened.

"I will go to them," he said, his voice filled with determination.

"We cannot allow this to become a riot"

Reiner's expression softened just slightly, but there was an unmistakable glint of concern in his eyes.

"Are you sure, Your Highness? The crowds could become unpredictable. If this escalates, it could put you in danger"

Minseok met his gaze with unwavering resolve.

"I will handle it, Captain. Trust me. This is the moment we've been waiting for"

With that, he turned away, his steps quickening as he made his way toward the royal carriage that would take him to the gates of the city.

Reiner followed silently, ever watchful, though Minseok knew he couldn't protect him from everything.

This was something Seraphina had to do alone.

As they reached the gates, Minseok's heart raced.

The noise of the crowd grew louder, and he could see the throngs of people, their faces desperate, their eyes filled with hope.

They had come for the medicine that could save them.

They had come to demand something more than just empty promises from the royals.

The carriage halted at the edge of the crowd, and Minseok stepped out, keeping his head high, his posture regal, but his heart heavy with the weight of what this moment meant.

The people had gathered for him, for Seraphina but it wasn't her they needed.

It was the medicine.

It was the promise of a better life.

And he was the one who had to deliver.

"Your Highness!"

A woman's voice rose from the front of the crowd, her voice rough but determined.

"We need the medicine! We need help! Please, don't leave us to suffer!"

Minseok's gaze softened for a moment before he stepped forward, raising his hand to silence the crowd.

The murmurs quieted, the people watching him with wide, expectant eyes.

"I know your pain," Minseok said, his voice ringing out with an unexpected authority.

"I know the suffering that you endure every day. I see you, and I hear you"

The crowd hung on his every word, and for a moment, the tension in the air shifted.

Minseok knew this was the key.

He had to make them believe, not just that he was their ally, but that he was their leader in this fight for a better life.

"But we cannot do this alone," he continued, his voice strong.

"We must stand together. The medicine will be delivered. The healing will continue, but we must be patient"

"We will fight for your right to live without fear of disease, without fear of hunger"

A murmur of approval rippled through the crowd, but Minseok could see the unease in their eyes.

They wanted more than words, they wanted action.

They had waited too long, suffered too much, to settle for anything less than change.

"I promise you," Minseok said, his eyes sweeping over the crowd, "we will make this kingdom one where all are treated with dignity, where no one is left to die for lack of a cure"

The crowd erupted into cheers, but Minseok's heart pounded with the realization of just how much was at stake.

This was more than just medicine, it was a call to arms.

The people were no longer content to live in the shadows of the nobles.

They wanted more, and if the nobility didn't act, it was only a matter of time before they took the kingdom into their own hands.

Minseok turned back to Reiner, his expression grim.

"This is only the beginning"

Reiner, ever the protector, nodded with a somber look in his eyes.

"I'll have the guards secure the area, Your Highness. We cannot let this turn violent"

As Minseok was escorted back to the carriage, his mind raced with thoughts of the future.

The nobles would notice.

Lady Verena would be watching.

And once they realized what he was truly doing, they would make their move.

But for now, the people had spoken.

And he would keep his promise.

His revolution had begun.

The following days were a constant tension between hope and fear.

Minseok felt the growing pressure as the whispers of the people, fueled by their newfound hope, spread like wildfire.

His underground efforts to provide medicine had taken root, and now the people were beginning to demand more.

The crowds at the gates had been only the beginning.

Minseok sat in his chambers late into the night, the dim light of a single candle flickering as he studied the logistics of his secret operation.

The city was stirring.

It had been weeks since the first medicine deliveries began, and with each passing day, more people were becoming dependent on it.

The sense of urgency was overwhelming, his every move needed to be precise, and calculated.

One slip, one mistake, and it would all come crashing down.

There was a knock at the door, breaking the heavy silence.

Minseok looked up, recognizing Rhea's quiet knock.

His loyal maid entered, her usually calm demeanor replaced with an air of urgency.

"Your Highness," Rhea said softly, her gaze flickering nervously toward the door before she stepped inside.

"There is something you need to know"

Minseok motioned for her to speak, his voice steady but betraying the unease he felt.

"What is it, Rhea?"

Rhea lowered her voice.

"Lady Verena has been asking questions. She's been speaking with Lord Gavriel, asking about the source of the medicine being distributed"

"They believe it's coming from the palace"

"From you"

Minseok's heart skipped a beat.

Verena was a threat, but Lord Gavriel's involvement made this all the more dangerous.

The two of them had the means to uncover his hidden network and if they did, the consequences would be disastrous.

'Is he trying to get back at me for being a beacon of hope during the war?'

"Have they learned anything?"

Minseok asked, his eyes narrowing with concern.

"Not yet," Rhea replied quickly.

"But they're suspicious, and they're getting closer. It won't be long before they connect the dots"

Minseok stood, his mind racing.

He couldn't afford to let them uncover his plans, not now.

"We need to act quickly," he said, his tone firm.

"I'll meet with Lady Elira tomorrow. We'll increase the medicine's distribution. We'll flood the streets with it"

"The more we get out there, the harder it will be for them to trace it back to us"

Rhea hesitated, a worried look crossing her face.

"Are you sure about this, Your Highness? Accelerating the shipments could draw more attention. If the wrong people notice—"

Minseok's expression softened for a moment, but there was no hesitation in his voice.

"We've already taken too long to act. The people are relying on this. We can't back down now"

"If they're going to discover us, it's better to let them try before we've done all we can"

Rhea looked at him with concern, but she nodded, clearly understanding the gravity of his decision.

"Then I will do everything I can to help. But please, be careful"

"The king is starting to notice your absence from the palace, and Lady Verena won't rest until she has answers"

He understood what her words meant, he had kept up the illusion that he was still playing the part of the dutiful princess.

Even as he worked against everything his father stood for.

"I'll handle my father," Minseok replied quietly.

"I'll make sure he believes I'm still focused on fulfilling my duties as the heir. He doesn't need to know about this"

"After all, I did promise him that I would stop, to a certain extent of course"

Rhea gave a small, anxious nod and made her way toward the door.

"I trust you, Your Highness. Just… please, be careful"

After Rhea left, Minseok stood alone in the room, the weight of the situation pressing down on him.

The kingdom was on the verge of change, but the price of that change was steep.

The nobles were watching, and they would never allow him to succeed without a fight.

The next day, Minseok met with Lady Elira in a hidden, secluded room within the palace.

The air was thick with the knowledge of how high the stakes were.

Elira had become a trusted ally, but even she couldn't ignore the danger that loomed over them.

"Seraphina," Elira said, her voice laced with concern, "if we increase the distribution now, we're risking everything"

"Verena and Gavriel are already suspicious. If they dig deeper—"

"We don't have a choice," Minseok interrupted, his voice cold with determination.

"The people are depending on us. They've waited too long for change"

"If we don't act, we risk losing their trust and we'll never get another chance"

Elira met his gaze, her eyes sharp with understanding.

"I understand. But we have to be careful"

"We'll need to cover our tracks, and move the shipments through the right channels"

"I have some allies in the merchant guilds. They can help keep the deliveries discreet"

Minseok nodded.

"Good. Let's move faster. Let's get the medicine out there before they can stop us"

Elira's expression hardened as she nodded.

"I'll make the arrangements. But remember Seraphina, the more we do, the more attention we'll draw. Lady Verena won't rest until she finds the source"

'Yeah yeah, I'm already tired of hearing her name'

"Then let her try. We'll be ready"

As the plan to distribute more medicine was set in motion, Minseok felt the walls of the palace closing in around him.

Every day, every action was a gamble.

He was leading a movement, one that could change the fate of the kingdom forever.

But the higher the stakes, the greater the danger.

Lady Verena and Lord Gavriel were closing in, and the king's attention was now focused squarely on him.

Minseok knew that time was running out.

The revolution was underway, but there were no guarantees that it would succeed.

As the day drew to a close, Minseok knew that the time had come.

He had been avoiding his father's summons for days now, but there was no escaping it any longer.

The king's gaze was sharp, and his cold demeanor never faltered.

This meeting would be a test.

One that Minseok had to pass if the plans for the medicine and the people's movement were to continue without interference.

The royal chamber was as cold and imposing as always.

King Feran sat on his throne, his expression unreadable, his fingers steepling in front of him.

Minseok entered, maintaining the composed and graceful air of the princess she had been raised to be, though the weight of the upcoming conversation bore heavily on her shoulders.

"You are late, Seraphina," the king's voice rang out, sharp and commanding.

"I apologize, Father," Minseok replied, bowing low.

"I've been preoccupied with my duties"

The king's piercing gaze never left her, his eyes calculating.

"Your duties? I'm curious, child, what duties keep you from appearing at the royal functions?"

"Your absence has not gone unnoticed. And your silence on matters of the court has been... troubling"

Minseok kept his face neutral, his heart pounding beneath the layers of royal decorum.

"I have been attending to matters of state, Father"

"The kingdom's health and well-being are my priority. I've been coordinating with the healers to ensure the people's needs are met"

The king's brow furrowed slightly, but he remained silent for a long moment.

Minseok knew that his father was calculating, weighing each word, but he couldn't afford to reveal anything.

Not now.

"You are aware, Seraphina," the king finally said, his voice dangerously low, "that you are the heir to the throne"

"I have already warned you that your duties are meant to serve the crown, the kingdom, and not the common folk"

Minseok's stomach twisted at the harshness in his father's tone, but he met his gaze with unwavering composure.

"I understand, Father. But as an heir, I also understand the importance of keeping the kingdom strong, and that includes ensuring the welfare of its citizens"

"The common folk... they look to us for guidance. I can't ignore that"

The king's eyes narrowed.

"Guidance? Do not forget, Seraphina, that your role is not to coddle the peasants"

"You are a princess of Lumastra. You have greater responsibilities than to indulge in their petty concerns"

"They are not your equal!"

Minseok's fingers clenched at his sides, but he kept his voice steady.

"I do not see the people as lesser, Father. They are the lifeblood of the kingdom. Without them, there would be no crown, no throne. I will not turn my back on them"

A tense silence fell between them.

The king's gaze darkened, his fingers drumming slowly against the armrest of his throne.

Minseok could feel the heat of his disapproval like a tangible force, but he refused to back down.

This was a battle he had to win, even if it meant standing against everything his father believed in.

"You will cease these... activities, Seraphina," the king said finally, his voice cold as ice.

"You will return to your proper duties, attend court, entertain suitors, fulfill the role of a princess"

"If you continue down this path, you will regret it"

"Do I make myself clear?"

Minseok's heart raced, the words stinging, but the fire inside him burned even brighter.

He knew that he couldn't let this go.

He couldn't stop now.

He needed to make a difference, he was fighting for the people, for a future that could no longer be ignored.

But to do that, he would have to outmaneuver his father.

"I hear you, Father," Minseok replied, bowing once more, his voice calm but filled with resolve.

"But I cannot turn my back on the suffering of our people"

"My duty to them is just as important as my duty to the throne"

King Feran's lips twisted into a cold smile, one that sent a chill down Minseok's spine.

"So be it Seraphina"

"We shall see how far this little game of yours goes"

With that, the king's dismissive gesture told her the conversation was over.

Minseok bowed once more, his mind swirling with the weight of his words.

As he left the royal chamber, a cold sweat lingered on his skin.

The meeting had been as expected, a confrontation that tested his resolve.

But the king was not a fool.

He knew something was amiss, and now Minseok had made himself a target.

But he wasn't going to stop.

Not now.

Not when the people were so close to finally having a chance at something better.

As he walked down the palace halls, the noise of the court fading behind him, Minseok's determination hardened into something unshakable.

He would do whatever it took to see his vision through.

Even if it meant opposing the king himself.

The revolution was taking shape, and Minseok knew the hardest battles were yet to come.
