Chapter 1 - Attack on the City of Man

Flames consumed the night, their light casting wild shadows across the dark forest surrounding the small town of Vardhall. What was once one of the last remaining human cities now lay in ruin, torn apart by a marauding pack of werewolves. Their guttural howls filled the air, blending with the desperate screams of the townspeople. The sound was a symphony of chaos, death, and despair.

Among the panicked crowd, a man sprinted, his broad shoulders heaving with every breath. In his calloused hands, he gripped a crossbow—worn but reliable. Harald, a town guard and farmer, wasn't a soldier by trade, but tonight, he was prepared to lay down his life to protect his family.

"Run!" Harald shouted, his voice rising above the cacophony. "Astrid, take Sigrid and RUN!"

His wife, Astrid, clung to their eight-year-old daughter, Sigrid, who was frozen in terror. The little girl's clear blue eyes reflected the inferno around her, wide with a mix of confusion and fear. Her small hands trembled as she clutched her mother's dress.

Astrid turned, her face pale. "Harald, you can't do this alone! We have to stay together!"

Harald's jaw tightened, his desperation hidden behind a mask of determination. "If I don't stop them, we all die! Go now—don't look back!"

Astrid hesitated, tears brimming in her eyes, but she knew there was no time to argue. She bent down, gripping Sigrid's shoulders. "Sigrid, listen to Mommy. Stay close to me. Don't let go of my hand, no matter what."

Sigrid nodded weakly, her small voice barely audible. "Okay, Mommy…"

**The Alpha Arrives**

At the town's main gate, chaos reigned. The once-sturdy wooden barrier now lay in splinters, crushed beneath the claws of the invading pack. The werewolves surged through like a tidal wave, their dark gray fur matted with blood, their snarls promising death to anyone in their path.

Leading them was Fenrir Bloodfang, the alpha. Towering above the others, his presence alone exuded raw power. His fur was blacker than the deepest shadows, and his glowing red eyes cut through the smoky haze like embers. Each step he took was deliberate, his sharp claws digging into the blood-soaked earth.

Fenrir stopped in the center of the burning town, surveying his handiwork. Flames reflected in his eyes as a cruel smile spread across his face. "Weak humans," he rumbled, his voice low and menacing. "Today, your existence ends. Your stories will be forgotten, your blood will stain this earth, and your screams will echo into nothingness."

Around him, guards fell like wheat before a scythe. None could withstand the alpha's might. With a single swipe of his claws, Fenrir brought down the last defensive wall, paving the way for his pack to continue their massacre.

**A Father's Defiance**

Through the chaos, Harald led his family through the burning streets. His hands gripped his crossbow tightly, his knuckles white as he fought to suppress his fear. Behind him, Astrid dragged Sigrid along, her steps faltering as smoke filled her lungs.

But their escape was cut short when a massive figure emerged from the flames, blocking their path. Fenrir.

The alpha stood tall, his blood-red gaze locking onto them. Two other werewolves flanked him, their growls deep and guttural, saliva dripping from their sharp fangs.

"SURRENDER OR DIE," Fenrir commanded, his voice resonating like an explosion. He raised a clawed hand, pointing at Sigrid. "Give me the girl, and I might let you live."

Astrid gasped, pulling Sigrid close. Her arms wrapped protectively around her daughter as if sheer will could shield her from the monster before them. "W-Why do you want her?" she stammered, her voice trembling but filled with defiance.

Fenrir tilted his head, his grin widening to reveal rows of razor-sharp teeth. "That girl smells... different," he said, inhaling deeply. "She has a scent that only the chosen possess. And I will take her—whether you hand her over or not."

"OVER MY DEAD BODY!" Harald roared, raising his crossbow. He released an arrow, which flew true but only grazed Fenrir's shoulder. The alpha flinched, more out of irritation than pain.

Fenrir chuckled darkly, stepping closer. "Human courage is always entertaining. It's a shame it's never enough."

**The Final Stand**

Harald knew he couldn't win, but he also knew what he had to do. "ASTRID! GO!" he shouted, turning to face Fenrir. He unsheathed a silver dagger from his belt, the blade catching the light of the flames.

Astrid hesitated for only a moment. "Sigrid, come on!" she urged, pulling her daughter toward a narrow alleyway.

"No! Papa!" Sigrid cried, her small hands reaching for him as tears streamed down her face.

"YOUR PAPA WILL BE FINE!" Astrid lied, her voice breaking as she dragged Sigrid away.

Meanwhile, Harald lunged at Fenrir, his dagger aimed for the alpha's neck. Fenrir moved with inhuman speed, dodging the attack and swiping at Harald with his claws. The blow sent Harald crashing into a stone wall, blood spraying from his chest.

"Pitiful," Fenrir muttered, plucking the arrow from his shoulder and tossing it aside. He stalked toward Harald, who struggled to stand despite his injuries.

Harald coughed, blood staining his lips, but he raised his dagger once more. "You... won't... take her..." he rasped.

Fenrir leapt forward, his claws striking true. Harald collapsed, his body lifeless. But even as the light faded from his eyes, a faint smile remained on his lips. He had bought them time.

**A Mother's Sacrifice**

Astrid and Sigrid reached the ruins of their home, where a hidden trapdoor led to an old basement. Astrid threw it open and ushered Sigrid inside.

"Sigrid," she said, crouching down to meet her daughter's tearful gaze. "Listen to me. You stay here, no matter what happens. Don't come out until it's safe."

Sigrid clung to her mother's hands, sobbing. "But I'm scared, Mommy! What if you don't come back?"

Astrid's heart broke, but she kept her voice steady. She leaned in and kissed Sigrid's forehead. "You're brave, my little Valkyrie. Stronger than you know. Mommy will come back for you. I promise."

Before Sigrid could protest, Astrid closed the trapdoor, her footsteps fading as she ran back toward the flames.

**Facing the Pack**

Astrid emerged onto the main road, her heart pounding. She screamed at the top of her lungs, throwing pieces of burning wood at the approaching werewolves. "HEY! I'M HERE!" she yelled, drawing their attention.

The werewolves turned, their bloodshot eyes locking onto her. They howled and charged, leaving the area where Sigrid was hidden.

Fenrir watched from a distance, his grin widening. "Brave," he mused. "I like that."

Astrid led the pack away, her steps growing heavier as exhaustion set in. At the end of a dark alley, her screams echoed one last time before silence fell.

**The Aftermath**

The city grew quiet, the fires dying down to smoldering embers. Smoke choked the air, and the once-bustling streets were now littered with the dead. In the hidden basement, Sigrid huddled in the darkness, her small hands clutching her knees.

Her mother's promise echoed in her mind, but deep down, she knew the truth. Neither of her parents would be coming back.

Tears fell silently down her cheeks as she whispered, "I'll be brave, Mommy... I promise."

Outside, the world burned, but in the silence of the basement, a spark of resilience was born in the heart of a young girl who had lost everything.
