Chapter 12 - Feast And Fresh Gear

The bar was lively, filled with players celebrating their victories or drowning their defeats.

Wooden tables were scattered across the room, illuminated by warm, flickering lanterns.

Conversations overlapped in a steady hum, and the faint clinking of cups echoed from the bar counter.

Lucas and Kael sat at a corner table, a hearty spread of food between them.

Lucas hesitated for a moment, looking at the plate of roasted chicken before him. Despite being in a virtual world, the food smelled as real as anything he'd ever encountered.

He picked up a fork, cut into the tender meat, and took a bite. The flavors hit him instantly — savory and perfectly seasoned.

Kael grinned across the table, tearing into a drumstick with enthusiasm. "Good, huh?"

Lucas nodded, his mouth full. He swallowed and wiped his lips. "It's amazing. I didn't expect it to taste like... actual food."

Kael chuckled. "Yeah, that's one of the best parts about Ethereal Nexus Online. They nailed the sensory integration. Tastes just like the real thing. Doesn't do much for your actual hunger, though."

"That's the downside," Lucas admitted, glancing at the loaf of bread on the table. He tore a piece off, savoring the buttery warmth. "Still, it's wild how immersive this game is."

Kael leaned back, his plate already half-empty. "It's what keeps people coming back. For some, it's the challenge. For others, the escape. And then there's people like us — here for the loot and a good time."

Lucas laughed. He couldn't remember the last time he had been this relaxed.

The raid had gone better than he ever expected, and the sense of accomplishment still lingered. He felt more confident, more capable, and he couldn't shake the grin that had been on his face since they finished.

Kael polished off his drumstick, tossing the bone onto his plate. "You did good today, rookie. Taking down that wolf on your own? That's impressive, especially in basic gear."

Lucas felt his cheeks flush slightly at the compliment. "Thanks. But I couldn't have done it without you and the team."

Kael waved his hand dismissively. "Team effort, sure. But skill is skill. And you've got it. That's why we're going to fix that gear situation of yours."

Lucas raised an eyebrow, setting down his fork. "Fix it? How?"

Kael grinned, leaning forward. "You'll see."

After finishing their meal — Kael paid for it without hesitation — they left the bar and headed toward the marketplace.

Nexus Haven's streets were alive with activity, players bustling from vendor to vendor, haggling over potions, weapons, and gear.

The air buzzed with energy, and Lucas couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder at the sheer scale of it all.

They stopped in front of a store with a large wooden sign that read "Steel & Stitch: Armor for All."

The display windows showcased everything from basic leather armor to elaborate plate mail gleaming with enchantments.

"This is the place," Kael said, pushing open the door.

Inside, the shop was just as impressive. Racks of armor lined the walls, and shelves were filled with helmets, gauntlets, and boots.

The shopkeeper, an NPC with a bushy beard and a keen eye, nodded as they entered.

"Looking for an upgrade?" the NPC asked, his voice gruff.

Kael gestured toward Lucas. "He is. We need something sturdy, but not too heavy. He's still getting his bearings."

Lucas frowned slightly. "Wait, Kael, I don't think I can afford — "

Kael held up a hand, cutting him off. "Don't worry about it. Consider it an investment."

"But — "

"No buts. You'll pay me back when you're rich from all the loot we're going to haul in future raids."

Lucas sighed but didn't argue further. He couldn't deny that better gear would make a huge difference.

The shopkeeper began pulling items from the racks, laying out a set of medium armor that struck a balance between protection and mobility.

The chest piece was reinforced leather with steel plating on the shoulders, the boots were sturdy but lightweight, and the gloves had reinforced knuckles for extra durability.

Kael crossed his arms, studying the set. "This'll do. Try it on."

Lucas stepped into a fitting area and equipped the gear. The difference was immediate. The armor fit snugly, and though it added weight, it didn't feel cumbersome.

He stepped out, glancing at himself in the nearby mirror.

"Not bad," Kael said, nodding in approval. "You almost look like a proper adventurer now."

Lucas turned, testing the range of motion. "It feels... good. Like I could actually take a hit now."

"That's the idea," Kael said, smirking.

The shopkeeper totaled the cost — 100 Nexus Coins. Lucas winced, but Kael paid without a second thought, waving away Lucas's protests.

"Relax," Kael said as they left the shop. "Like I said, this is an investment. Besides, I've got more coins than I know what to do with."

Lucas chuckled, adjusting the straps on his new armor. "Thanks, Kael. Seriously. I'll pay you back."

Kael shrugged. "I know you will."

The sun in Ethereal Nexus was high in the sky as they walked back through the bustling streets of Nexus Haven.

The marketplace was as lively as ever, but Lucas noticed a clock icon in the corner of his interface — afternoon already. Time moved strangely in the game, but it reminded him of his responsibilities in the real world.

"I should log off soon," Lucas said, glancing at Kael. "I've got to make lunch for my sister."

Kael nodded. "Yeah, I should probably call it a day too. Real-life obligations and all that."

They stopped near the town square, where players were gathered around various vendors and quest boards.

"Well, rookie," Kael said, holding out a hand. "It's been fun. Let's team up again soon."

Lucas shook his hand, a genuine smile on his face. "Definitely. And... thanks again. For everything."

Kael grinned. "Don't mention it. Just make sure you don't get yourself killed out there."

With that, Kael walked off, blending into the crowd.

Lucas watched him go for a moment before opening his menu and selecting the Log Out option.

Lucas blinked as he was pulled back into the real world, the dim light of his apartment a stark contrast to the vibrant colors of the game.

He stretched, feeling the stiffness in his muscles from sitting too long, and glanced at the clock. It was past noon, and Mia would be home soon.

He stood, shaking off the lingering adrenaline from the raid and the excitement of his new gear. The game was addictive, but he had other things to focus on.

As he moved to the kitchen to start preparing lunch, he couldn't help but smile.
