Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 : The Collector's Wrath

The chamber pulsed with tension as Calder Venric stepped closer, his silver eyes locked on Kael. The faint hum of arcane energy grew louder, the air heavy with an unnatural chill.

Kael tightened his grip on the satchel, the golden thread in his chest pulsing wildly. The crystals inside resonated with the dark crystal he had just taken, their combined energy creating a powerful, almost oppressive aura.

"You have no idea what you're meddling with, boy," Venric said, his voice smooth and mocking. "Those artifacts don't belong to you."

"They don't belong to you either!" Kael shot back, his voice steady despite the fear twisting in his stomach. "You're just hoarding them for your own greed."

Venric's lips curled into a cold smile. "Greed? No, boy. Ambition. Power. Something you clearly don't understand."

Ember stepped forward, her flames blazing as she positioned herself between Kael and Venric. "We're not afraid of you," she growled.

Venric raised an eyebrow, his silver eyes glinting with amusement. "Brave words. But bravery alone won't save you."

He raised a hand, and the air crackled with energy. Shadows coiled around his fingers like living things before erupting into a wave of dark energy that shot toward Kael.

"Kael, move!" Lira shouted, grabbing his arm and yanking him to the side.

The wave of energy struck the ground where Kael had been standing, shattering the stone and sending shards flying.

"Keep him off Kael!" Ember barked, darting toward Venric with her flames blazing.

Venric's smirk didn't falter as he gestured sharply, a barrier of shimmering green light erupting between him and Ember. Her flames struck the barrier, but they fizzled out harmlessly, leaving her growling in frustration.

Lira darted to Venric's flank, her daggers flashing as she struck at his side. But the shadows around Venric shifted, forming a protective wall that deflected her blades.

"You're persistent," Venric said, his tone laced with mockery. "I'll give you that. But you're out of your depth."

Kael's chest tightened as the golden thread pulsed more strongly, its warmth spreading through him like fire. He reached into his satchel, pulling out the golden crystal. Its light flared brightly, filling the room with a warm, golden glow.

Venric's eyes narrowed, his smirk fading. "Ah, so you're the one connected to the thread. I wondered who it would choose."

Kael stepped forward, the crystal's energy surging through him. "I don't care what you think you know," he said, his voice steady. "We're taking the artifact, and we're leaving."

Venric chuckled darkly, his silver eyes gleaming. "Oh, boy. You think the thread makes you strong? Let me show you what real power looks like."

He raised both hands, and the air around him erupted with dark energy. Shadows twisted and coiled, forming into massive tendrils that lashed out at the group.

"Scatter!" Ember shouted, leaping back as one of the tendrils slammed into the ground.

Kael raised the golden crystal, its light flaring as he released a wave of energy. The tendrils recoiled, their dark forms sizzling as the golden light tore through them.

"Keep him busy!" Kael shouted, his heart pounding.

Umbra darted forward, his shadowy tendrils lashing out at Venric. The collector growled, his shadows clashing with Umbra's, the two forces writhing and snapping like living creatures.

Lira moved like a blur, her daggers flashing as she struck at Venric from every angle. His barrier of shadows shifted and twisted to block her attacks, but she kept pressing forward, forcing him to focus on her.

Kael clenched his fists, the golden thread pulsing wildly in his chest. He reached for the dark crystal, pulling it from his satchel. The moment he touched it, its energy surged through him, colder and heavier than the golden crystal's warmth.

The two crystals resonated, their energies intertwining as the golden thread linked them together. Kael could feel their combined power coursing through him, a force both exhilarating and terrifying.

"Kael, now!" Ember shouted, her flames blazing as she struck at Venric's barrier.

Kael stepped forward, the crystals in his hands glowing brightly. He focused on the golden thread, letting its energy guide him.

The room seemed to still as Kael raised the crystals, their light flaring brighter and brighter until it filled the entire chamber.

"Enough!" Venric roared, his voice echoing like a thunderclap.

The shadows around him surged, forming into a massive wall of dark energy that slammed toward Kael.

Kael gritted his teeth, the golden thread's warmth surging through him. He raised the crystals, their light colliding with the wall of shadows in a blinding explosion.

The force of the clash sent Kael staggering backward, his chest heaving as the crystals' light dimmed. When the smoke cleared, Venric stood at the center of the room, his silver eyes burning with fury.

"You're more trouble than I expected," Venric said, his voice low and dangerous. "But this isn't over."

Before Kael could respond, Venric raised a hand, and the shadows around him twisted and coiled. In an instant, he vanished, his presence leaving the room cold and still.

Kael sank to his knees, the golden and dark crystals still warm in his hands. His body ached, and his mind raced with questions, but relief washed over him as he realized they had survived.

"Is he gone?" Umbra asked, his voice trembling.

"For now," Ember said, her flames flickering weakly. "But he'll come after us. You can count on that."

Kael nodded, his chest tight as the golden thread pulsed faintly in his chest. He slipped the crystals back into his satchel, their combined weight heavier than ever.

"We need to get out of here," Kael said, his voice hoarse. "Before he comes back."

Lira smirked faintly, though her expression was tense. "Agreed. Let's move before he changes his mind."

As they fled the chamber, Kael couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the air. Venric was more powerful than he had imagined, and the artifacts were more dangerous than he had realized.

But they couldn't stop now.

The journey was far from over.
