Amara found herself adapting very fast to her new position. She flawlessly performed in front of his family - smiling, laughing and talking with them just like she was acquainted with the whole group for so long. It wasn't as hard as she'd feared; Noah was there beside her, giving calm words of comfort and leading her through the crowd of strangers.
However, with every passing day at Bennett's place, she was seeing that it went beyond Noah wanting to make a point to his grandmother. His actions had a gravity, and a driving sense of obligation followed by him. He wasn't there just to show up with some beautiful lady by his side – he was keeping up with an inheritance.
In no time, Amara realized how weighty Noah's duties were. The Bennetts were influential people and Eleanor was head of the family affairs. She commanded respect from each one of them and Noah's intentions were not left in doubt either way.
As the hours passed by, Amara finally had a one-on-one meeting with Eleanor. They occupied a space at the study room; a large room stuffed with books whose covering materials were made from leather and also had an aroma that comes from old wood. Having been taken away for a chat by his cousins, Noah left Amara vulnerable under Eleanor's piercing eyes.
The older woman gave her an intense look that seemed to measure her very soul.
"You're not like those other girls that Noah parades around," said Eleanor in a controlled voice. "You're an excellent choice for him."
Fear clogged Amara's throat making it difficult to speak out rightly. She could feel the heavy scrutiny of Eleanor weighing upon her as if looking through any pretense or facade shown.
"I love Noah," Amara managed to say defiantly knowing well she must act accordingly. "I only wish him well."
On hearing this, Eleanor smiled faintly while showing that she understood more than they were telling her. "It's good. He requires a resilient companion because the environment he dwells in… is rather harsh I suppose. Are you ready for that?"
Amara nodded although deep inside, she wasn't certain if she really grasped anything from what Eleanor had just told him about Noah's life being different than hers but having complex sides too like of other human beings'.
Amara remained alone in the library after Eleanor left and she had a lot of things to think about. She had agreed to this arrangement for her own reasons, but now, she couldn't help but feel like she was stepping into something far bigger than she had anticipated.
