Chapter 3 - Fukushū no Kage CHAPTER 3

Shiroi Academy

---

The sky above Shiroi Academy had turned orange by the end of the day as students scattered across the grounds, heading home or staying to socialize. Haruto Akiyama walked along a cobblestone path toward the main building, his mind filled with thoughts and memories of the day.

Today had been particularly exhausting. Lessons moved faster than he expected, and assignments seemed to pile up like insurmountable mountains. However, alongside Renji Kudo, Mikasa Hoshino, and Yuta Fujimoto, the burden felt a little lighter.

"Haruto!"

Renji's voice pulled him out of his thoughts.

Haruto looked up to see his best friend approaching with a calm expression. Mikasa and Yuta walked behind him, each with their usual seriousness, but a sense of trust and camaraderie surrounded the group.

"How was your day?"

Renji asked with a light smile.

"Better than yesterday,"

Haruto replied, squinting slightly at the setting sun.

"But I still feel lost in some subjects."

Mikasa stopped beside them, her brown hair swaying gently in the breeze.

"I told you not to worry too much. Everyone feels that way at first. The key is to keep practicing."

Yuta, who had been silently observing, nodded slowly.

"That's true. It's not easy to adapt when expectations are so high. But at least we have a good group to rely on."

Renji, always maintaining a serene calm, added,

"And we're all learning together. No one expects you to be a prodigy from day one."

Haruto smiled faintly at the conversation. It was comforting to know he wasn't alone in his struggles, that his friends were there to support him and help him overcome every obstacle. Since arriving at Shiroi Academy, each had played a role, bringing different perspectives and skills to form a solid team.

"I think without you guys, it'd be even worse,"

Haruto said, sincerity evident in his voice.

"Of course it would!"

Renji laughed, his tone relaxed.

"But you still need to work harder. We can't carry all the weight, you know?"

"Don't get me wrong,"

Haruto quickly replied, amused by his friend's reaction.

"I'm doing everything I can. It's just that sometimes, the pressure feels like too much."

Mikasa squinted in thought.

"I get how you feel. At Shiroi Academy, everyone constantly has to prove their worth. But you're not alone, Haruto. We're here to help you."

Yuta, always with a calmer demeanor, smiled subtly.

"And we'll always remind you that you're not just another student. You're one of us, and as a group, we'll face any challenge together."

The conversation flowed as they moved toward a quieter corner of the campus. In the distance, the sound of other activities still echoed in the air, but for them, this moment was unique and personal.

"I think the most important thing is to keep practicing together,"

Renji commented, pulling out a set of math problems.

"Haruto could use a little more help here."

"Agreed,"

Mikasa responded, taking the sheets and beginning to review the problems with Yuta.

Haruto sat down with them, watching as each contributed to his learning. Renji explained steps, Mikasa corrected subtle errors, and Yuta provided additional tips. Although the process was occasionally tedious, the dynamic was effective.

As they spent the afternoon immersed in study, Haruto felt a growing admiration for his friends. They were dedicated individuals, each with unique strengths. Mikasa was logical and analytical, Renji extremely detail-oriented, and Yuta, though quiet, possessed a serene wisdom that rarely needed words.

"How are things in science?"

Yuta asked, directing his question to Haruto.

"I'm still struggling with the practical experiments,"

Haruto admitted, frowning as he reviewed some data in his notes.

"But I'm glad to have you guys to clarify things. Before coming here, all of this was completely new to me."

Renji, who always had a measured response, nodded.

"That's normal. No one is born knowing everything. With time and effort, each of us will improve."

Mikasa looked at Haruto directly, her gaze commanding respect.

"Also, you need to learn to make decisions faster. In this school, seconds matter."

"I can't help but think about what's at stake,"

Haruto commented, closing his notebook and relaxing a bit in his seat.

"I don't want to end up being just another forgotten student. I want to leave a mark, even if it's a small one."

Renji leaned back, thoughtful.

"That's something we all want, Haruto. But don't pressure yourself too much. Every step we take is part of that process."

"And as long as we work together, we'll go further,"

Mikasa added with a slight smile.

The sun slowly set, painting the skies in shades of purple and pink. It was a sign that it was time to leave. Haruto, sitting among his friends, felt that at least tonight, he could rest with a slight relief in his chest.

"Thanks for being here,"

he murmured, looking at each of their faces with gratitude.

"You don't have to thank us,"

Renji replied lightly.

"It's what we do. We're a team."

Mikasa nodded calmly.

"And we'll never be far if you need anything."

Yuta smiled softly, a gesture that symbolized understanding and support.

"Let's keep moving forward. The road will be tough, but together, we'll overcome it."

Haruto watched as the three slowly got up and gathered their things. The idea of facing upcoming challenges no longer felt as overwhelming. The shadow of doubt was still there, but with them by his side, every step felt like a victory.

The group headed toward the campus exit, once again in silence but connected in a way that went beyond words. Shiroi Academy might be an unforgiving place, but in the midst of the storm, there would always be a light to guide them: their unbreakable bond.
