Chapter 6 - Snapped

The morning light filtered weakly through the canvas of the tent, casting a muted glow over the interior.

The camp was waking up, but the atmosphere remained heavy with the tragedy of the day before.

Adrien stirred from sleep, the remnants of the restless night haunting his sleepy self.

He blinked against the light, his heart still quickening at the memory of Daniel's transformation and the chaos that ensued.

Mel, Sarah, and Alex were still asleep, their faces etched with exhaustion. Adrien quietly unzipped his sleeping bag and slipped out, mindful not to disturb them.

As he stepped outside, the chill of the morning air wrapped around him, a stark contrast to the warmth inside the tent.

The camp bustled with activity; soldiers moved with purpose, setting up more tents and organizing supplies.

The smell of fresh coffee and something cooking wafted through the air, but Adrien's stomach twisted at the thought of food.

Instead, he walked toward a cluster of soldiers gathered near a temporary command post.

He looked back behind the camp, wondering how it was the military base was still standing when the city had been shredded to rubble.

Then he recalled how their own house withstood the chaos before being brought down by Daniel. 'This must be reinforced with military grade materials'.

Looking away from the base,

His gaze swept over the scene, noting the weary faces of the military personnel, the underlying tension palpable in the air.

He overheard snippets of conversation, discussions about the previous night's chaos and the search for survivors. A tall soldier with a buzz cut addressed a group, his voice firm and commanding.

It sounded like they had stumbled across another group of people seeking refuge.

"Listen up! We're heading back out today to search for survivors and assess the situation in the areas we've secured. It's dangerous, but we need as many eyes and hands as we can get. We'll be heading into parts of the forest where certain creatures have been reported."

Adrien's heart raced, a mix of excitement and determination bubbling up inside him. He had to do something; sitting idle in the camp felt dull. He could feel something calling out to him. He stepped forward, raising his hand.

"I'll come along," he called out, his voice steady despite his thundering heart. Walking forward to get closer to the group of armed soldiers.

The soldier turned to him, eyes narrowing as he assessed the newcomer. "You sure about that? It's not a safe job, kid. Last night was just a taste of what's out there."

Adrien stood tall, suppressing the doubts clawing at him. "I know. But I can't just sit here. You need to help find other survivors, and I'm sure I'll be a useful asset."

"Wait wait wait..! another soldier suddenly shouted, "I know you! Aren't you that famous genius kid?" He said looking around the people on the camp to see if they recognised him as well, "You know, Adrien, the owner of Quantum labs, I couldn't see your face well last night in the dark, but I'm very sure about it now."

"..." A pin drop silence took hold of the exterior camp, eyes widened and murmurs began to spread as people realised the soldier was right. Anyone in the world could recognize that handsome face and head of glistening black hair.

"He's right..."

"Wow, seeing a big shot like him walking among us is evidence of the reality of the situation." another person spoke out loud

There was a moment of silence before the soldier nodded respect evident in his gaze.

"Alright, but if you're joining us, you need to stick close and follow orders. You'll be paired with one of our scouts. Honestly after knowing your identity, I'm more inclined to have you help things get up and running, everything suddenly stopped working at some point yesterday."

"About that, I think that we have the foreign energy wisping about in the air to thank. I'm sure most of you feel it, even if it's only subtle, apart from the gaping spaces in land that appeared out of nowhere, It's the only visible change I have noted. And I believe the earth was expanding in size which caused all those tremors"

"I see, yes I feel like something about the air has changed, but I can't wrap my head around what it is. And this is all the more reason to have you in administration but if you insist you can come along Mr. Cortez."

"And we will have your companions moved to inside the base if you wish for it"

Adrien nodded curtly. "I understand. That would be great"

The soldier gestured for him to follow. "Get your gear together, if you have any, if you don't you can get some of our spares. We'll be ready to move in thirty minutes."

As Adrien turned to head back toward the tent, he saw Mel stepping outside, her eyes squinting against the light. "Adrien? What's going on?"

"I'm going with the soldiers to help search for survivors," he explained.

Her face paled, and she shook her head. "No, please... it's too dangerous."

"I know," he replied gently, stepping closer. "But we can't just wait here. We need to do something. If there's a chance we can find more people, we should take it."

A flicker of fear crossed her features, but she quickly masked it with determination. "Then I'm coming with you. I can't just sit here either."

Before Adrien could protest, Alex and Sarah emerged from the tent. "What's happening?" Sarah asked, concern etching her features.

"Adrien's going with the soldiers to search for survivors," Mel replied, her voice firm.

"Great, count me in too," Alex said, crossing her arms resolutely.

Adrien felt a swell of gratitude for their support but also a tinge of worry. "You guys don't have to do this. It could get really dangerous. And you guys should rest. you look tired"

They looked weary, probably from not sleeping well and brooding over Daniel's death.

"You are one to talk, we're in this together" Sarah stated, her voice unwavering. "Fine, but come back safe."

Alex and Mel looked back at Sarah in protest, but she only shook her head. She knew they needed something to distract them. Daniel's demise still weighed heavily on their minds, but rushing to follow him was not the solution.

The duo decided to give in and rest for the day while helping out in the camp.

...

The forest loomed thick and ominous around Adrien and his thirty something companions, the sound of crunching leaves underfoot mingling with the distant calls of anxiety from the soldiers.

As they moved deeper into the trees, the sun rose higher, casting shorter shadows that danced unsettlingly across the ground.

Suddenly, a guttural growl broke the silence. The group halted, instincts kicking in as they scanned their surroundings. Out of the underbrush emerged a group of humanoid beasts, grotesque distortions of the human form.

Muscles rippled beneath matted fur and skin stretched too tight, while eyes glinted with a predatory hunger. There were towering figures adorned with jagged scars and hunched forms that skittered unnaturally, each one exuding an aura of menace.

"Get ready!" Sergeant Miller's voice rang out, but before he could issue further commands, the beasts charged.

The sound of gunfire erupted, a cacophony of bullets striking the monstrous forms.

But to their horror, the rounds seemed barely to penetrate; the beasts roared in defiance, their unnatural strength allowing them to shrug off the damage.

Adrien felt a wave of panic hit him as he watched one of the soldiers get slammed into a tree, the force knocking the wind out of him.

But he kept the fear and panic off his face, exuding a calm, composed aura.

"Fall back!" someone shouted, but the beasts were relentless, their snarls and growls echoing through the forest as they overwhelmed the soldiers one by one.

In that moment of desperation, something surged within Adrien an electric feeling coursing through his veins.

A light flickered in the depths of his consciousness, igniting a fire he couldn't quite comprehend. As a beast lunged at him, he instinctively sidestepped to avoid it, and to his astonishment, he moved with a speed that felt beyond human.

Before he knew it, he was springing into action, counterattacking and striking the beast with a powerful force he didn't understand.

The creature was thrown back, crashing into the ground with a yelp. Adrien blinked, stunned by his own power, but the rush of adrenaline propelled him forward.

"Adrien!" Miller's voice cut through the chaos. More astonished than questioning "What are you doing?"

"I… I don't know! Just stay close!" he called back. Another beast barrelled toward him, and he thrust out his hand, turning up his focus sharpened like a blade.

To his astonishment, the creature halted mid-lunge, as if impelled by an unseen force. It was as though the air around him reacted, pushing against the monster and thrusting it away.

His abilities surged in waves, and soon he began to realize that he was not alone.

He glanced around to see the group of armed soldiers around him also moving with newfound agility, as if their natural survival instinct had awakened something deep within them, too.

A young female soldier effortlessly dodged a striking claw, striking back and surprising herself with the force of her retaliatory kick.

Even though it was not enough to straight up kill the monster, it seemed to be much better than their useless firearms.

The air crackled with a strange energy, each blast of gunfire charged with an electric pulse, hinting at something more significant that lurked just beneath the surface, boosting the piercing power of the bullets

They were tapping into this energy—it was aether, a force that seemed to intertwine with their very beings, liberating them from their previous human limitations.

"Use it! Focus on it!" Adrien shouted, both to his group and to the soldiers still struggling against the onslaught. And a little to himself

More soldiers, too, began to harness this power, though it manifested in specific forms; some found themselves with enhanced resilience, others with speed, and yet others communicated seamlessly with one another, coordinating their attacks.

But not everyone was so lucky, some just found themselves being thrown around by the ghastly beasts, unable to comprehend where their comrades were getting this otherworldly power.

Miller was in this group of unfortunate souls. The soldiers, trained as they were adapted quickly to the situation and regrouped around each other for support.

As a coordinated effort took form, the tide of battle shifted. With a newfound strength, they engaged the beasts, Adrien in particular started using telekinetic bursts to scatter them, while the soldiers unleashed a barrage of concentrated firepower.

Teamwork flowed effortlessly as they adapted to their new abilities, taking down creature after creature.

A sharp cry of distress pierced the air as one soldier fell, but the group pressed on, rallying around him.

Even as their own injuries began to pile up—a deep gash here, a bruised limb there—their collective resolve overshadowed their pain.

The light of the aether fuelled their hope and determination, a beacon against the encroaching darkness.

Finally, after an arduous struggle, the last of the beasts fell, its form collapsing in a heap on the forest floor.

Breathing heavily, Adrien looked around at the ragtag group—wounded but alive, empowered but shaken.

In the wake of the battle, the forest stood silent, yet charged with the vibrant energy that had become their lifeline.

But as they gathered to regroup and assess their injuries, the reality of the situation settled in.

They bore the scars of a brutal confrontation, know that they had merely scratched the surface of the chaos that had descended upon them.

The world had changed irrevocably, and they would have to navigate this new reality together.

As the dust began to settle and the echoes of battle faded into wary silence, Adrien and the others regrouped, panting heavily and nursing their wounds.

The victory against the initial beasts felt hard-earned, yet a lingering tension hung in the air, like a storm cloud that refused to dissipate.

"Is everyone alright?" Miller asked, conducting a quick headcount of his remaining soldiers. The mood was somber but relieved.

Just as they caught their breath, though, a deep growl reverberated through the forest, pulling at their attention.

From the shadows of the trees, a figure emerged, larger and more terrifying than any beast they had encountered so far.

It stood at least eight feet tall, muscles like boulders rippling beneath its skin, which appeared to oozes a strange, dark mist.

Its eyes glowed with a feral light, and wicked claws glinted menacingly. The creature exuded an aura of raw power, and the moment it stepped into view, the confidence of the group faltered.

Adrien felt a knot of dread clench in his stomach, as he recognised the familiar beast, formerly Daniel, but as the beast advanced, something snapped within him and his widened eyes gained a cold, calculative, focused glint.

It felt like he was losing a part of his humanity in order to gain something more surreal.
