Chereads / Vantage / Chapter 2 - Entering Epsilon

Chapter 2 - Entering Epsilon

The world around Alex seemed to dissolve as the soft whirring of the headset took over his senses. For a moment, there was nothing but darkness—an overwhelming, endless void that stretched on in all directions. He could feel the weight of the headset against his face, its cool material pressing gently against his skin, but it was as if his body itself had vanished, leaving only his mind to experience the new reality that was about to unfold.

Suddenly, a sharp light burst in front of him, and the darkness was replaced with a sprawling landscape. The transition was so smooth that Alex barely had time to process it before his surroundings came into focus. He was standing in the middle of a wide, open field, the grass swaying gently in the wind. A bright, azure sky stretched endlessly above him, dotted with a few fluffy clouds drifting lazily. It was a place that looked peaceful—almost too peaceful for a game.

His heart skipped a beat. This was nothing like any VR experience he had ever imagined. It wasn't just the graphics or the lifelike scenery that took him by surprise. It was the sheer depth of the world, the way it seemed to pulse with life. He could feel the breeze on his skin, hear the faint rustle of leaves in the distance, even smell the earthy scent of the grass beneath his feet.

"Is this… real?" Alex whispered to himself.

Before he could dwell on the question, a voice boomed from above him, so loud and powerful that it shook the ground beneath his feet.

"WELCOME TO EPSILON, PLAYER."

Alex blinked in surprise, his gaze shooting upwards, but there was no one to be seen. The voice seemed to come from everywhere at once.

"I am the Narrator," the voice continued. "You have been selected to play Vantage, the most famous and treacherous game known to man. Your journey will test your wit, strength, and resolve. Only those who can conquer the trials will emerge victorious and claim the reward."

The reward, Alex thought, his mind racing. Leo had mentioned it earlier, but now that he was actually here, he felt the weight of the words. The idea of gaining the power, knowledge, and riches of the game's creator was starting to feel less like a myth and more like a dangerous, tempting reality.

"Instructions will be provided at each step," the Narrator's voice continued. "But be warned: the path is not an easy one. Trust no one. Only the strongest will survive."

The ground beneath Alex's feet suddenly shifted, and in an instant, the landscape around him was no longer an idyllic field, but a dense, twisted forest. The trees were massive, their gnarled roots twisting upward as though reaching for the sky. A thick fog settled over the forest floor, making it nearly impossible to see more than a few feet ahead.

"What the—?" Alex began, but his voice faltered as a low growl echoed from somewhere deep within the woods.

The Narrator's voice cut through the tension. "You will encounter enemies, both real and virtual. Fight them, or avoid them, but know this: Every decision you make will have consequences. Time is of the essence."

Suddenly, a notification flashed across Alex's vision. It was a small, holographic window that appeared in the corner of his eye.

Objective: Survive the Forest of Shadows.

Time Remaining: 30:00

A countdown timer ticked down, and Alex's pulse quickened. The weight of the situation settled on him—this wasn't just a game. This was real, in a way he couldn't yet fully comprehend. His choices would matter, his survival depended on them.

He took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. The forest was unnervingly silent now, save for the distant, echoing growls and the occasional snap of a twig. Alex scanned his surroundings, trying to make sense of what to do next. There were no clear paths, no signs pointing him in any direction. Just a maze of trees and shadows.

From somewhere to his left, a rustling sound reached his ears. He tensed, instinctively crouching low, trying to blend in with the underbrush. His heart hammered in his chest, and his mind raced as he struggled to remember anything from the game's description that could help him.

A shape emerged from the fog—this time, it was more grounded, more real. A large, wild animal, a lynx. Its tawny fur blended with the forest's shadows, and its sharp yellow eyes gleamed through the mist. The cat was massive, nearly as large as a small panther, its body built for stealth and power. The lynx's ears twitched, its nostrils flaring as it caught Alex's scent.

Alex's mind raced—he knew he couldn't outrun it. The creature was silent, but its muscles were coiled, ready to spring. It was a predator, and he was the prey.

The Narrator's voice broke through his thoughts: "You are in the Forest of Shadows, where creatures such as this roam. Will you fight, or will you flee? Your choice will determine the outcome."

Alex's pulse quickened as he scanned his inventory, the small holographic pouch appearing at his side. He reached for it, his fingers trembling slightly as he retrieved a basic hunting knife and a vial of healing potion. The knife felt strangely light in his hand, though it appeared razor-sharp.

He crouched low, trying to stay as quiet as possible, his heart pounding in his chest. The lynx was still, its eyes locked on him, waiting. Alex could feel the tension in the air—it was a standoff, and the first move would decide everything.

The creature's muscles rippled as it began to shift, slowly circling him. Alex tried to stay calm, taking in his surroundings. There was a large boulder to his right, offering some cover. He could make a run for it, hoping the lynx didn't catch him.

But he had no idea what was worse—the wild, unpredictable creature or the time ticking down on the countdown timer.

The lynx darted forward in a blur of motion, faster than Alex could react. Its claws slashed the air as it leapt toward him, but Alex instinctively sidestepped, narrowly avoiding the attack. The predator's claws raked the earth where he had been only moments before, sending dirt and twigs flying.

He barely had time to react. He swung the hunting knife with every ounce of strength he had, aiming for the lynx's flank. The blade cut through the air, grazing the creature's side. It howled in pain, but the beast wasn't done yet. It hissed, its eyes burning with fury, and charged again.

Alex's breath came in ragged gasps as he dodged, his body moving on instinct. The knife felt like an extension of his arm now, a part of him. The lynx lunged, but this time, Alex was ready. He stepped to the side and thrust the blade forward, aiming for the beast's vulnerable underbelly

The strike hit. The lynx let out a final, guttural cry, stumbling back. It collapsed to the ground, its body twitching before it went still.

Alex stood there, his heart racing, staring at the fallen predator. He had survived. Barely.

He took a shaky breath and wiped his brow, still processing what had just happened. The forest was eerily silent again, save for the distant sound of the wind rustling through the trees. Alex glanced down at the lynx's body, then up at the path ahead. He had made it through the first trial. But the countdown still ticked on.

The game had just begun.
