Chapter 17 - Chapter 16: Secrets in the Shadows

Zoe Carter had a talent for trouble. This time, she wasn't just causing it—she needed it. And what better way to get detention than by slipping a fake tarantula into the staff lounge coffee pot?

Dr. Adrian's reaction was priceless.

"Zoe Carter! To Mr. Saville's office. Now!" he roared, his face as red as a stop sign.

Zoe shrugged, hiding a smirk. "Whatever you say, Doc."

When she reached Mr. Saville's office, he cracked the door open just enough to glare at her.

"What are you doing here?" he snapped, his voice sharp.

"Adrian sent me. Something about detention," Zoe replied, brushing past him and flopping into a chair.

Saville sighed like someone who'd just lost a bet. "You shouldn't be here."

"Not my problem," she said, crossing her arms.

He muttered something under his breath and started pacing the office. He kept glancing at the clock like he was late for something, his hands twitchy. Zoe noticed his eyes dart to the locked cabinet in the corner more than once.

Interesting.

By the time the school was empty, Zoe decided it was time to act. Saville was digging through a drawer, his back turned. She grabbed a heavy bookend and, with one solid swing, knocked him out cold.

"Sorry, Mr. Saville," she muttered, pulling out her phone.

A few minutes later, Damian, Emma, and Oliver slipped into the office.

"Zoe, have you lost your mind?" Emma hissed, her eyes wide. "If anyone catches us—"

"No one's going to catch us," Zoe interrupted. "Now shut up and start looking."

Emma muttered something about bad decisions but joined in anyway. Damian rummaged through the desk while Oliver poked around the bookshelves. Emma headed straight for the locker.

Damian rummaged the desk for a few seconds and he felt something, the drawer had a hidden compartment t in it. He put his hand and pulled out a small leather diary from the hidden compartment. He quickly slipped it into his pocket before anyone could see too much.

"Uh, guys?" Emma called. She held up a circular crest she'd found in the locker.

Damian's eyes flashed with surprise for a moment but he quickly covered it up. He knew Mr Saville worked with the Silent Blades, the visit of Mr Maxwell was enough testimony, but him working for them was something Damian that got Damian confused.

Was Mr. Saville an assassin? Damian was a field assassin, doing the missions, he was not much a higher up in the organization so he didn't know a lot of undercover assassins. He only knew the full time ones.

"Damian, look" Emma called out to him.

The crest was heavy and intricate, with two daggers crossed in the center. Thorny vines wrapped around the edges, and a blood-red gem sparkled in the middle. It looked like something out of a vampire movie.

"Creepy," Zoe said, leaning in for a closer look. "What is it?"

"Dunno," Damian said, his voice a little too casual.

"You've seen this before," Zoe said, narrowing her eyes. She had noticed the flash in his eyes. It was quick but she had seen it.

"Nope," Damian replied, shrugging. "But it's probably worth looking into."

Zoe didn't buy it, but she let it slide—for now.

Once the room had been picked clean, the group turned to the still-unconscious Mr. Saville.

"What do we do about him?" Oliver asked nervously.

"We wake him up and make him forget," Damian said.

Emma crossed her arms. "And how do you plan to—"

"You are too naive, Emma"

Emma pouted her lips in protest.

Damian laughed lightly. "Watch, it's normal vampire skill. Although we hardly use it." Damian said.

He crouched next to Saville, his eyes glowing faintly as he used vampiric charm. "You fell asleep at your desk," he said, his voice soft and hypnotic. "You didn't see or hear anything unusual."

Mr. Saville nodded slowly, his eyes glassy.

"Done," Damian said, standing up. "Let's go."

On the walk back, Emma kept turning the crest over in her hands. "This thing is important. I can feel it. What do you think it means?"

"No idea," Damian said, keeping his face blank.

Zoe shot him a sharp look but didn't say aynthing.

As the group disappeared into the night, Damian's thoughts raced. He knew exactly what the crest was—it belonged to the Silent Blades. But until he figured out what Saville was doing with it, he couldn't let anyone else know. 🕵️🕵️
