Chapter 5 - A Prelude To What's To Come

Derrick, who had tried to kill me nine months ago, would finally be released on my birthday. Which is tomorrow night.

Everyone is coming by the way. Both of my grandparents. A few temples. Several noble houses. It's going to be packed.

Back to Derrick. He apparently has been repenting sincerely in his room ever since the incident. Hah!

All of his meals are being served to his room and the only time he is allowed to leave said room is when he attends lessons.

Druvis has been collecting my mother's demands as fast as possible and is due to present them on my birthday.

It hasn't been easy on her though.

Some of the things my mother asked for are treasures. That harp for instance is an enchanted weapon. The Unknown Egg is sort of a mystery. But it's been around since the first Civil Elf War. No one has been able to hatch it and it's now considered a treasure of the elven race.

There's even a small legend about it.

Oh and the ten thousand gold? I had asked Hadrian a few times about the value of money. After being pestered a few times she finally relented and taught me the basics of how money is valued.

There are three types of currency in the kingdom. Bronze coins, silver coins, and gold coins.

One hundred bronze coins equal a silver coin and a hundred silver coins equal one gold coin.

Ten bronze coins can buy you a meal at a commoner's food stall. Ten silver coins are the average monthly expenditure of a large family. Which includes rent, food, daily necessities, medical needs, etc.

A single gold coin is the average commoner's yearly salary. Five gold coins can buy a house and twenty to fifty gold coins can buy a building.

In summary…I'm rich and about to be even richer!

Ten thousand gold can buy a small country or island.! It's a completely exorbitant price.

Everyone is praying for the celebration to go smoothly. The maids, staff, masters, and their children.

Everyone.

Because my mother is a scary woman when she's upset. Believe me when I say this. She let Druvis off easy, at least physically she did.

Which makes me wonder. She's a champion. I've read about them briefly. Every single race is significantly stronger and faster than each other in its own way but Champions of the Gods are a cut above.

She could've rescued me on her own or prevented Derrick from kicking the bassinet. With her previous loss of a child logic and common sense state that she should be pretty overprotective of me. Yet she left me alone with strangers and the potential murderers of her child for months. Without ever seeing me.

And then when something terrible happened to me. All she asked for were things of monetary value and…treasures.

Why did she even have me? It just doesn't sit right with me. What does she want? That egg? The harp? To punish Druvis? To hurt me?

One of the more disturbing tales I've heard about her is called the Boiling Tea Party.

Someone had made a malicious comment regarding her deceased child and her ability to give birth shortly after she returned to the estate.

My mother had watched, listened, and waited in silence from another table.

Then she got up and ordered for tea to be prepared. She along with several of her guards poured boiling tea down several of the partygoers' orifices.

It didn't matter if you were just a bystander or an instigator. Everyone was served some tea.

My biological mother is a fucking gangster.

So it just doesn't make sense that she's just calmly letting this go. There must be something that she wants.

On that note. Everyone else has also been dutifully preparing to give me a gift of their own.

Which also means…"I heard the Duke bet six hundred gold on the eighth miss, liking his gift!"

The kitchen maids giggled and gossiped over their master's foolish behavior. I snorted and crawled away from the kitchen towards the door to the outside.

I got up slowly, used a stick, and pushed it open before walking out. The sun cast a golden glow on my surroundings and warmed my skin.

Much better. Heh.

Six hundred gold? He better win. I've asked about my allowance before. My room. Which refers to me, my food, my servants, and other necessities. All total up to about one hundred gold a month.

For now, the Duke fronts the cost. I wonder how rich he is? I know it's a lot but I'd love to see some exact numbers.

Whatever. I should enjoy the sun while it's here. It's going to be night soon.

Night and Day is kind of strange here. I've gotten used to it over time but memories of my past life often raise a sense of unfamiliarity in me.

Daylight is limited to seven hours during the summer and three hours during the winter. It's currently summer so I can enjoy the sun for a few more hours but soon it'll be dark.

I crawled in the grass towards the outside world. It's really just an alcove with a garden but it's the closest to outside that I've gotten. Green and purple grass gathered in my hands. It's really nice out here today.

I sighed and felt the breeze on my skin.

Peace. Tranquility. C—

"Hey, fugly!"

Gone. All gone. Why?
