Chapter 17 - The Return of the Prodigy

Chapter 17: The Return of the Prodigy

The three-week vacation had ended, and Caleb returned to Awakeners Academy. The moment he stepped onto the campus grounds, whispers erupted around him like a wildfire.

"That's Caleb, right? The one who topped the competition?"

"I heard he fought an S-rank beast alone!"

"Not just that, he's got some crazy skills. Did you see the leaderboard? He crushed everyone!"

Some students admired him with awe, others with envy, and a few with outright fear. As Caleb made his way to his dorm, he could feel their gazes burning into his back. It was a strange feeling—being the center of attention—but he tried to ignore it and focus on the day ahead.

Class 1: Beastology

Caleb's first class was Beastology, taught by the stern but knowledgeable Professor Maynard. The lecture hall was packed, as this subject was considered essential for all awakeners.

Professor Maynard paced at the front, her gray hair tied back in a tight bun. "Today, we'll delve into the biology of high-rank beasts, focusing on their weaknesses and behavioral patterns."

She waved her hand, and a holographic image of a Hydra appeared in the center of the room.

"Take this Hydra, for example. Classified as an S-rank beast, it's nearly impossible to kill because of its regenerative abilities. But if you sever all its heads simultaneously, it triggers a collapse of its core. This knowledge could save your life one day."

Caleb took detailed notes, the system quietly assisting him by highlighting key points. As the lecture continued, a few students glanced at him, hoping to catch his reactions, but he remained focused.

Class 2: Combat Techniques

The next class was Caleb's worst: Combat Techniques, led by the energetic and wicked battle-hardened Instructor Zeal.

"Alright, class!" Zeal barked. "Today, we're focusing on speed and precision. You can have all the power in the world, but if you can't hit your target, you're useless."

The students were divided into pairs for sparring practice. Caleb was paired with a senior named Marcus, a muscular boy known for his brute strength.

"Ready, freshman?" Marcus smirked, gripping his longsword.

Caleb nodded, drawing his Voidfang Daggers. "Always."

The spar began, and Marcus charged forward with a powerful overhead swing. Caleb sidestepped effortlessly, using Shadow Step to maneuver behind him and land a light slash on his shoulder.

"Too slow," Caleb said calmly.

Marcus growled and launched a flurry of attacks, but Caleb's agility and precision outclassed him. By the end of the session, Marcus was panting, while Caleb stood unscathed.

"Impressive," Instructor Zeal said, clapping. "But remember, Caleb, overconfidence can be just as dangerous as a lack of skill."

"Yes, sir," Caleb replied, bowing respectfully.

Class 3: Mana Manipulation

After a short break, Caleb attended Mana Manipulation, a subject crucial for all awakeners. Professor Elara, a gentle yet strict teacher, greeted the class with her usual calm demeanor.

"Mana is the lifeblood of all awakeners," she began. "Control it, and you control your power. Lose control, and it will consume you."

Elara demonstrated by forming a delicate mana shield in her hand, its surface shimmering like glass.

"Today, we'll practice creating mana constructs. Start with something simple, like a sphere or a shield."

Caleb closed his eyes, focusing on the flow of mana within him. Guided by the system's precise instructions, he formed a small, glowing dagger in his hand. It pulsed with energy, its edges razor-sharp.

Elara noticed and approached him. "Excellent work, Caleb. Your control is remarkable for someone at your level."

"Thank you, Professor," Caleb said, dismissing the construct with a flick of his wrist.

Class 4: Strategy and Tactics

The final class of the day was Strategy and Tactics, taught by the ever-serious Mr. C.

"Combat isn't just about brute strength or flashy skills," Mr. C said, his voice firm. "It's about outsmarting your opponent, predicting their moves, and using your surroundings to your advantage."

He divided the class into teams and assigned them a mock battle scenario: defend a fortress against an invading force. Caleb's team looked to him for leadership, and he quickly devised a plan.

"We'll use the high ground to our advantage," he explained. "Archers, take position on the walls. Mages, set traps at the chokepoints. Melee fighters, hold the gate and fall back if necessary."

The simulation began, and Caleb's strategy unfolded perfectly. The invaders were repelled, and his team emerged victorious.

"Well done, Caleb," Mr. C said, nodding in approval. "You've got a sharp mind for tactics." come to my office right now. I know you raided Gates this vacation I want you to be honest with me how many gates did you raid, I raided nine gate in total, I saw and watched how you cleared the gate that opened during the competition I was impressed by your outstanding performance so I decided to give you an award this is a beast evolving scroll of the S class use its wisely thank you sir. I appreciate your kindness, what I don't know is whether I should collect this precious gift, you are too modest,"MC said, take this gift and that is a command

Thank you for your generosity sir Caleb bowed is head with respect.

After a long day of classes, Caleb was ready to head home. As he walked through the school grounds, he noticed students whispering again.

"He's so strong."

"I heard he defeated a B-rank thunder wyvern during the vacation."

"No wonder he's ranked first."

Ignoring the chatter, Caleb made his way to his dorm, eager for a quiet evening. He removed his daggers, placing them carefully on his desk, and sat down to reflect on the day.

The system chimed in.

Final Thoughts

Despite the attention and pressure, Caleb felt a sense of fulfillment. He had grown stronger, both physically and mentally, and was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

"Tomorrow's a new day," he muttered to himself, lying down on his bed. "And I'll be ready for it."

As the moonlight streamed through the window, Caleb drifted off to sleep, his mind filled with thoughts of his next steps and the journey that awaited him.
