Chereads / Ultimate Vengeance of Ethan / Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

Ethan's gaze sharpened, his mind racing. Isabella, standing before him now, was not the naive young woman from his past life. She had her own reasons for seeking him out, and whatever they were, he knew they wouldn't be simple. The betrayal still stung, the memory of her choosing Caleb over him, but the man he was now was no longer the heartbroken boy who had loved her so deeply.

Isabella stepped forward, her eyes meeting his with a mixture of regret and urgency. "I know you don't trust me, and I don't expect you to. But what I'm about to say is important."

Ethan's posture remained stiff as he crossed his arms, his gaze icy. "You've got one chance, Isabella. Speak."

She took a deep breath, gathering herself before speaking. "It's Caleb. He's dangerous—more dangerous than you realize. He's been plotting to take control of the entire province, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to achieve that. I… I made a mistake, Ethan. I thought I could control him, but I was wrong."

Ethan narrowed his eyes, his thoughts swirling. Caleb had always been ambitious, but this? To control the entire province? It was a leap, even for him. "And why should I believe you now? After everything that happened?"

Isabella's expression faltered as she lowered her gaze. "Because I've seen the darkness in him. The real Caleb. The one you never knew. I never understood it before, but now I do. He's twisted, and he'll destroy anyone who stands in his way—including you."

Ethan's heart beat faster at her words, the weight of her confession heavy in the air. His mind flashed to his previous life, the moment Caleb had betrayed him and sent him to his death. Was this another one of Caleb's manipulations? Or was Isabella speaking the truth?

He could feel the pull of his past life—of the emotions he had once felt for her. But those feelings were irrelevant now. His goal was clear: revenge. The past was a shadow that hung over him, but it no longer had the power to control him.

"If Caleb wants to take control of the province," Ethan said slowly, "he'll need more than just his name. He'll need power. He'll need alliances. He'll need something that you can't give him."

Isabella's eyes flickered with uncertainty. "You're right. But that's why I'm here. I know where he's getting his support from—who's backing him. And I can help you stop him."

Ethan studied her closely, sensing an underlying desperation in her voice. It was clear she was caught between two forces—her past loyalty to Caleb and the growing realization that he was becoming something monstrous.

He wasn't sure if he could trust her, but he also knew that he couldn't afford to ignore her warning. Caleb was a problem, one that needed to be dealt with before he could move forward with his own plans. If Isabella truly wanted to help, then he would use her knowledge, but he wouldn't be fooled by her words.

"What do you want from me?" Ethan asked flatly.

Isabella hesitated before answering, her voice barely above a whisper. "I want redemption. I want to make up for what I did to you—what I failed to see in Caleb. But I also need your help. Caleb's hold on the province is stronger than you think. His alliances are deep, and his plans are already in motion. If we wait too long, it'll be too late."

Ethan's eyes narrowed. He knew that time was always a factor in the game of power. The longer he waited to strike, the more Caleb's influence would grow. He had to act—he had to be ahead of the curve.

"Alright," Ethan said, his voice cold and calculating. "Tell me everything you know. But understand this: I don't trust you. If you try to deceive me, I will end you."

Isabella met his gaze, the weight of his words sinking in. There was no room for betrayal this time. She had one chance, and one chance only.

"I understand," she said, her voice steady despite the tension.

Over the next few days, Isabella provided Ethan with a wealth of information about Caleb's plans and his growing network of supporters. It was worse than Ethan had anticipated. Caleb had secured powerful allies—wealthy merchants, influential nobles, and even a few military commanders who were loyal to him. His network was vast, and he was using it to consolidate his power.

One of Caleb's key allies was Lord Harlow, the same noble Ethan had been targeting. Harlow had been a major financial supporter of Caleb's rise, helping him secure the resources needed to expand his influence. But what Ethan didn't know was that Caleb had also struck deals with several of the province's most dangerous underground factions—mercenaries, smugglers, and assassins—all of them eager to help Caleb seize control.

Ethan's mind whirred as he processed the information. If Caleb had these kinds of resources at his disposal, then he couldn't afford to play small. Caleb wasn't just a spoiled heir anymore. He was a serious threat to everything Ethan had built, to everything he was working toward.

Isabella's role in all of this was becoming clearer. She had been on the inside—she had seen Caleb's rise, his manipulation, and his ruthlessness. But she had also seen his vulnerabilities. And now, she was offering Ethan the chance to exploit them.

But Ethan couldn't let his guard down. He had learned the hard way that people were always driven by their own agendas. Isabella's motivations may have been driven by guilt, but that didn't mean she was entirely trustworthy. She had helped Caleb once. Would she do so again? Would she betray him as well?

The days that followed were filled with careful planning. Ethan knew he needed to act swiftly, but he also had to be methodical. Caleb's web of influence was vast, and any misstep could result in disaster.

He began by testing the loyalty of the people around him, planting seeds of doubt in the minds of Caleb's allies. He reached out to Lord Harlow, offering him an alternative—one that promised more power, more wealth. He knew Harlow's greed would be his undoing, and before long, the lord began to waver in his loyalty to Caleb.

Ethan's next step was to weaken Caleb's support among the military commanders. He had learned that several of them were secretly dissatisfied with Caleb's leadership, but they feared retribution if they acted against him. To sway them, Ethan promised them positions of power in his own future rule, ensuring they knew that their loyalty would be rewarded.

But no matter how much he worked in the shadows, no matter how many pieces he moved, Ethan knew that the final confrontation with Caleb would be inevitable. He had to be ready. He had to strike when Caleb least expected it—and then, once he had Caleb cornered, he would make him pay for everything.

As the days passed, the tension between the two brothers grew ever more palpable. Caleb, unaware of the forces working against him, continued to build his empire. But the cracks were starting to show, and it was only a matter of time before everything fell apart.

And when it did, Ethan would be there to pick up the pieces.
