Chapter 4 - Introduction 3: The Black Sails

◇ ◇ ◇

Back in the old days, when a ship had been fully constructed and was ready to sail the seas, it was named thereafter, either by the shipwright or the owner of the ship who had ordered for its construction. The name of the sea vessel was based mostly on three conditions:

 * Firstly; Based on a special quality it possessed, one which was exclusive to it alone and clearly distinguished it from other ships. These qualities could be some commendable features, such as its super speed on the seaways, its durability against the forces of nature, etc. Its name, sometimes, could also be humorously based on a dispensable feature, such as the length of its mast, thus, one could find a ship named 'Zesendertig' Which is just a Dutch translation of the number '36' !

* Secondly; Based on an event, memorable to the shipwright or the owner, an event that depicted the reason for the construction of the ship, or even an event that took place while the vessel was being constructed.

* Thirdly; A ship was usually named after someone who had a special place in the Memory of the owner. The person in question was usually one who had already passed away, and so, to pay tribute to his / her legacy, the vessel was constructed in his, or her name. . . .

. . . . As for the Black Sails, it was given the name because...….. of course, because it had Black Sails!

The name 'Black Sails' was actually first used by Captain Noname's victims, and later spread on, just like his fast-rising achievements, until it got to his own ears, he eventually adopted the name and also made it his crew's name.

But then, his was not the only ship in the world to have black sails, so what exactly made this one special?

>Well, the sails of the ship were so black that it completely absorbed 100% of light !

It was also so opaque that even the brightest light brought to it at one side would not be seen on the other side, and this special quality was brought about by a single drop of some black-coloured position on any regular-coloured ship sail. This potion was possessed by the captain himself, and he had always made use of it whenever he got a new sail for his ship. To the other crew members, except Henry, it was still a black box as to why he used it on new sails of his ship, but it meant more to Captain Noname than just a coloured potion... . . . .

A few minutes after the heist was over, the Black Sails was seen advancing on the calm waters of the sea as gentle winds blew from the western direction. As the ship kept sailing at a slow but steady rate, an unanticipated phenomenon began to unfold; The opacity of the water in the atmosphere started increasing; It looked as though they were entering a foggy region.

Santiago, being very agile and acrobatic, always stayed in the crow's nest; a small, comfortable space at the top of the mast; It was round, open, and worth calling a room. Santiago noticed the blurriness of vision but didn't care too much as he had very sharp eyesight – He had a special ability of consciously controlling the dilation and contraction of his iris, making them either contract so small to the extent of the pupils being only a tiny black dot, or dilate them so large that the pupil occupies the whole space of his iris.

Santiago looked down and sighted his colleague, Jack, taking off his shirt, revealing a built upper body. The bandana on his forehead was also taken off, and it revealed a very rough and messed-up linear scar that ran horizontally along his hairline.

"Hmph! " Santiago remarked, thinking that Jack was doing all that to make him jealous of his builds, so he found a paper, took a thin, short stick and put it close to a lamp, using it as a makeshift pen to scribble some words on the paper, after which he squeezed and threw the paper to Jack.

After being touched by the paper ball, Jack stared sternly and fiercely towards the direction from which it flew and saw Santiago signal him with his head to pick it up.

Reluctantly, Jack picked up the paper ball and read the two words written on it—

'SHOW OFF! ☻'

Jack huffed and called out to Santiago—

"If you think you are any better, why not come down here and display your bone of a muscle?!"

"Bone of a muscle???!!!" Santiago exclaimed and immediately climbed down the mast, like a squirrel would, down a tree. He towered over Jack, contracting his iris as a move to make him look more scary and intimidating, but Jack just flexed his chest and Santiago instantly got the message.

"OK, OK, you win! But what's the big deal taking off your shirt in this paradoxically warm but windy weather?"

"That's the deal Santiago; It's windy, but yet, the temperature just keeps increasing somehow, it's just too.. off!"

"Well, I'll tell you what Jacko! My bandana's red my jacket's blue...

...No matter the weather, I'm still cool. "

"Whatever, but can you just stop calling me Jacko already?" Jack said as they concluded their discussion and left for their posts.

To Santiago, average temperature change was never a problem, courtesy of his diverse heritage; His mother was Indian, and being much closer to his mother, he stayed in the hot part of the country for a long time before eventually meeting his Mexican father. As for cold temperatures, his agility, flexibility, and keen sight made it possible for him to freely and speedily move underwater, venturing into deep, dark parts of the water that had very low temperatures, causing him to eventually adapt to the cold aquatic environment and, consequently, the cold terrestrial habitat.
