Chapter 9 - A drunk mother

Lu Jinchen looked at Gao Yiming who was grinning like a cat. His eyes narrowed. Suspicious. Too suspicious. "Yiming..."

"Yes, Jinchen?"

"Whatever you're thinking in your mind, take it, crumble it into a tiny ball, and throw it into the deepest darkest pit where even GPS can't find it. Understood?"

Gao Yiming blinked innocently. "Me? Thinking something? Pffft. I would never."As if! Lu Jinchen knew this guy too well. He had probably already planned a honeymoon, picked out baby names, and was mentally designing a nursery. After all, Gao Yiming and his mother shared the same lifelong mission—to get him married, as if the world would collapse if he stayed single."Enough grinning like an idiot. Call that woman."

Gao Yiming pressed his lips together. "Are you sure?" he asked cautiously. "Think it through. You literally got married yesterday, and now you're already considering divorce. Aren't you being a little too hasty?"

"How about this...," he leaned forward, his tone silky like a man ready to do his best pitch. "Why don't you give Miss Xia another chance? Meet her again. Talk to her. Get to know her. Maybe take her out to dinner—"Lu Jinchen's eye twitched. "Are you trying to set me up on a date? Did you forget? This is a contract marriage. Business only."

Gao Yiming coughed. Plan failed.

"Fine." He sighed in defeat. "Don't talk to Miss Xia. Get divorced. But think about your mother first. What will you tell her? She's already over the moon about your marriage. If you do this now, she might just fly back and set you up on another blind date..."

Lu Jinchen's expression froze, his soul leaving his body momentarily.

Gao Yiming had a point.

Several memories flashed through his mind. His mother's blind dates. The horror. The sheer trauma. A shiver ran down his spine. He could not—would not—go through that again!Between the pervert tigress and his mother's taste in women, he'd pick the tigress. Atleast, she was slightly.... bearable.

"Fine. I'll give her another chance." He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Call her and ask her to—"

Ring. Ring.

The familiar ringtone sent a chill down his spine. He slowly glanced at his phone. The caller ID? His dear mother.

What timing!

Taking a deep breath, he answered, "Mom."

"JINJIN BABY!!! HOWWWWW ARE YOU?!?! WHERE'S MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW?!?!?! GIVE HER THE PHONE THIS INSTANT!!!!" His mother's overly enthusiastic voice practically boomed through the receiver.

Lu Jinchen's eyes narrowed. "Mom... are you drunk?"

"Noooooooo... you know I wouldn't touch a drop of alcohol after you ordered me not to—"

"Mom!"

"Fineeeee... I did drink... just a little... I promise. Only one, no two, no five... just five glasses..."

"Mom!"

"Jinjin baby, you just got married! As your mother, I'm celebrating! You can't stop me! And you know what they say here—If you're happy and you know it, drink some wine! If you're happy and you know it, drink more wine! If you're happy and you know it, then your cheeks are gonna show it, if you're happy and you know it, drink some more wine! Ha! Whoops! Uh-oh!"Lu Jincheng practically cringed at his mother's song and rubbed his temples. "Mom..." But, she continued, ignoring him. "Maybe I should have stopped at glass number... five? Or was it seven? Hehe... Anyway, let's not talk about this. Let's talk about my daughter-in-law. Ahhh, I wish I could've been there for your wedding, but don't worry! I'm already taking the first flight and—"

"NO!" Lu Jinchen nearly fell out of his chair. "Mom, you can't come!"

A big pause.

And, then his mother's voice returned, all her drunkenness vanishing. "Lu Jinchen. Tell me the truth. Did you really get married? Or are you trying to scam your mother?"

His throat went dry. "Of course, I got married! Why would I lie?"

"Then put my daughter-in-law on the phone."

"Mom, I'm at work!"

"Then send me a proof. A picture of your wedding certificate, a picture of you two together, or call me when you get home so I can talk to her."

"Yes, Mom."

"And Jinjin baby, if you dare forget or lie... hehehe..." she trailed off, her voice returning to its drunken state, but the underlying warning sent a shiver down his spine. Though his mother was a cheerful and easy-going person, when she got angry, even King Yan wouldn't be able to save him.

Lu Jinchen swallowed hard. "I'll send it as soon as I can."

"Okay, Jinjin baby! Talk to you later! Mom loves you lots... muah, muah, muah!"

Click.

The line went dead. Lu Jinchen exhaled and placed his phone on the table, his soul exiting his body once again. Thinking about his mother, he could already feel a migraine coming. Gao Yiming, on the other hand, was dying of silent laughter.

"Call her. Now," Lu Jinchen ordered, rubbing his temples.

"Of course," Gao Yiming grinned, as he pulled out his phone and dialed Xia Yuqing's number.

Then—ring, ring.

Both the men turned towards the source. Right there, on the chair was a small white and black handbag. And the sound was coming from it.

Lu Jinchen stared. "You have got to be kidding me."

That idiot woman forgot her bag here?! How was he supposed to contact her now?! Carrier pigeon?!

Gao Yiming hung up with a grin. Seeing his friend's expression darken, he chuckled and picked up the bag "Relax. I'll get her address and set up a meeting for tonight."Lu Jinchen nodded. "Thank you, Yiming."

As Gao Yiming turned to leave, Lu Jinchen narrowed his eyes. "Wait! Don't call her to the office," he warned, remembering today's disaster. No way was he going to let history repeat itself!

"Set the meeting in a public place," he added, just in case. "With witnesses. Many, many witnesses."

If they met in public, she wouldn't—shouldn't—try anything indecent, right?

Gao Yiming was stunned for a moment, then pressed his lips together to stop himself from laughing. "Jinchen, don't tell me.... are you scared?!" he asked, his brows raised funnily.

Lu Jinchen shot him a look. "Scared? Me? No! I don't get scared. Never."

"I see, "Gao Yiming nodded, pressing his lips together, trying not to explode with laughter.

Seeing that, Lu Jinchen's face turned red from embarrassment. "If you laugh, no bonus!"

Gao Yiming nodded, but then— "HAHAHAHA! Of course! HAHAHAHA!" He ran out of the room before Lu Jinchen could throw something at him.

Lu Jinchen clenched his fists, his face dark.

Damn crazy woman!!!! It was all her fault!!!He could already imagine his fun married life... starting today.
