Lewis stood frozen, his heart pounding in his chest as he watched the grisly scene of a seraph with feathers of ash hover over the bodies of his parents.
Blood dripped from his long, elegant fingers, pooling at his feet. Its eyes glowed with a cold, unearthly blue light.
The metallic scent of blood filled the air making Lewis retch.
The ash-winged seraph breath was steady, almost serene, in stark contrast to the violence he'd just unleashed.
"Why? Why did you do this?"
Lewis demanded, his body shuddering with rage.
The seraph tilted his head, a twisted grin spreading across his face.
"Why?.... Because it's fun to torment the weak."
Enraged by the seraph's words, Lewis lunged forward, but before he could take a second step, the seraph materialized in front of him, driving a sword into his chest.
Agony surged through Lewis's body as blood poured out, his life seeping away as he staggered.
Lewis fell to the ground, but instead of hitting the floor, he sank.
Falling into what felt like a bed of water.
And once he emerged on the other side, he woke up with a loud gasp for air.
Lewis breathed heavily, wondering where he was.
He stared at the white ceiling for a moment while catching his breath before slowly sitting up.
He noticed drips were connected to his arm, and he was wearing some sort of gown, which made him realize he was in a hospital.
Lewis touched his chest, expecting there to be a hole there,e but there was none.
Lewis frowned in confusion.
He certainly recalled being stabbed by the seraph so how the hell was it gone?
As he pondered, he remembered his sister and his mother and what happened to them.
Rage and sadness filled him as he remembered the seraph had killed them.
There was no way they could have survived like he did.
Even the most powerful healer, a sovereign known to regrow lost limbs, couldn't save them, after all, they had been diced to pieces by the seraph.
The memory made him nauseous, recalling their mutilated bodies and the seraph's sadistic grin.
Tears streamed uncontrollably down his face as he remembered his sister's smile and his mother's caring words.
He would never see or hear from them again.
"And it was all because of that damn seraph," Lewis clenched his fists, gritting his teeth in hatred. He wanted it dead
Suddenly, he heard a mechanical sound in his head.
Tring!
Lewis opened his teary eyes and saw a floating rectangular box in front of him:
[Congratulations! You have awakened the Angel Assault System]
"Angel Assault System?" Lewis mouthed, staring at the purple panel floating before his eyes. 'What the hell is this?'
[You have been chosen as a host for the Angel Assault System]
[A system created to give the host power to eliminate the seraphs and gods that have invaded your world in disguise as humans.]
[You must thwart their plans to consume your world, driven by their desire to prove their superiority.]
Lewis blinked his teary eyes twice and rubbed them, but the floating panel remained.
He tried to touch it, but his hand passed through it.
This made him confused as he wondered if he had lost his mind from the trauma or was a dream.
But as he reread the system info, he felt his heart race, it calling and it aligned with Lewis's desires.
"Eliminate the seraphs huh," Lewis muttered but then the door to his room abruptly swung open, startling Lewis.
"I see you're awake," a nurse said, walking in.
She had chestnut-brown hair, gentle green eyes, and a comforting smile.
"I'm Nurse Sheila. Nice to meet you, Lewis." She smiled, and Lewis nodded in reply.
He wondered if Sheila could see the floating panel, but her lack of reaction indicated it was visible only to him.
"So, Lewis, how do you feel?"
"I feel fine physically, but mentally, I'm not so sure," Lewis replied.
"After what you've been through, that's understandable."
"Can you tell me what happened with the seraph invasion?" Lewis asked.
He had heard that a gate had opened in the sky and angels were falling.
So he hurriedly home to his family and that was when he saw the seraph with feather of releasing ashes.
The appearance of the seraphs was an odd occurrence as it was usually monsters like orcs, goblins, and the like that came out from these gates and that was when there was a dungeon break.
This heaven gate had appeared out of nowhere and exploded open out of nowhere with no warning.
"It's been a week since the seraph attacked. The seraphs left shortly after their assault but as soon as they left, new dungeons began to appear. The dungeons are so close to breaking, and hunters are busy with them. The casualty and death rates among civilians and hunters are high. And at this rate, there won't be enough hunters left to handle the dungeons."
In simple terms, things were chaotic.
Lewis then realized something Sheila had mentioned.
She said the seraphs had left, but according to the system, they were hiding among humans in disguise.
Lewis sucked in a deep breath realizing what this meant, whatever they wanted couldn't be good and it will certainly pose a threat to humanity.
"I'll be back later to run some tests. If everything looks good, you can be discharged and you'll be free to go home." Shelia said
'Home, huh?'
Lewis's home was his family, but they were both dead, so he had no home.
Shelie noticing Lewis's somber look then remembers hearing that Lewis's family had been killed by emergency officers.
Sheila then berated herself for her insensitivity and hurriedly apologized, but Lewis stopped her, stating he was fine.
"I'm sorry once again."
"No issues."
"Hmm...I still have patients to tend to." Shelia said as she hurried to leave, but then there was an earthquake that shook the entire building.
The room trembled violently, causing the lights to flicker.
Shelia stumbled mid-step as the floor shifted beneath her.
Her eyes widened in panic, arms flailing for balance as she fell.
In a split second, Lewis moved forward, his hands grasping her, and she fell on his chest instead of the ground.
The jolt of the impact reverberated through his body, but he held firm, steadying her as debris rattled around them.
The tremor stopped, and Lewis let her go.
"Is it an earthquake?"
Lewis asked, but Shelie placed both hands on her cheek, feeling it was warm.
"I-I don't know, but I'll go find out," she said getting a grip of herself and leaving Lewis's room.
Suddenly, a mechanical voice rang in Lewis's head,d and he saw the words on the panel had changed.
[A seraph has been spotted close to your location]
[Find it and slaughter it.]
