Chapter 5: Sora's Awakening

---

Sora sits alone in his room, the dim glow of the city filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Hoshino mansion. His terminal screen still flickers with fragments of the corrupted drone data, but his focus is elsewhere. The image of the malfunctioning drone—the erratic sparks, the haunting voice, and the corrupted Unity symbol—has left a mark on his mind.

Leaning back in his chair, Sora closes his eyes. His head throbs with the weight of unanswered questions. What were those images that flashed through his mind during the patrol? Why did the girl in the memory seem so familiar, yet so distant? He whispers a single name, almost involuntarily:

"Aiko."

The sound of it feels foreign on his tongue, yet it sends a chill down his spine. His chest tightens as an unfamiliar warmth floods his senses.

---

Sora's vision blurs, and the sterile confines of his room dissolve entirely. The cold, lifeless air is replaced with the warm, fragrant breeze of his childhood.

He finds himself in the sprawling gardens of the Hoshino mansion, a place that feels at once familiar and alien. The air carries the mingling scents of blooming roses and freshly cut grass. Rays of sunlight stream through the canopy of trees, creating shifting patterns on the ground as the wind rustles the leaves.

In the distance, the sound of laughter floats through the air, pure and unrestrained. Young Sora, no more than ten years old, stands barefoot on the soft grass, his heart racing with excitement as he searches for the source of the sound.

"Aiko!" he shouts, his voice bright and playful.

The reply comes as a giggle, light and teasing. "You're too slow, Sora!"

His gaze snaps to the movement ahead—a girl with long, dark hair streaks across the garden, her laughter ringing like music. Her dress, simple yet immaculate, flutters behind her as she ducks behind a tall rose bush.

Young Sora grins and picks up his pace, weaving between flower beds and hedges, his small hands brushing past petals and leaves. His pulse quickens as he rounds the corner and finally catches sight of her.

Aiko crouches by the edge of the pond, her delicate fingers pointing at something just beneath the surface. She turns her head slightly, catching sight of him, and flashes a mischievous smile.

"You found me," she says, her voice filled with mock defeat.

"I always do," young Sora replies, kneeling beside her. Their shoulders brush, and an unspoken bond sparks between them—one of trust and familiarity.

"Look," Aiko whispers, her tone hushed with wonder.

Sora follows her gaze to the pond, where a koi fish glides gracefully through the water. Its scales shimmer in the sunlight, shifting hues of gold, red, and white with every ripple.

"It's beautiful," Sora says, his voice soft and awed.

Aiko tilts her head, her dark eyes reflecting the sunlight. "So are you," she whispers, almost inaudibly.

The words catch him off guard, and he turns to her, startled. She blushes deeply, her cheeks tinged with pink, and quickly springs to her feet.

"Catch me if you can!" she calls over her shoulder, dashing away before Sora can respond.

For a moment, he remains kneeling by the pond, his reflection staring back at him. A warmth fills his chest, a feeling he doesn't yet have the words to describe.

---

The idyllic scene takes a sudden, jarring turn. The sound of boots crunching against gravel pierces the tranquility of the garden. A shadow falls over Sora, and he looks up to see his father, Daichi Hoshino, striding toward them.

Daichi's imposing figure is framed by the sharp edges of his tailored suit, and his expression is a mask of cold authority. His gaze, hard and unyielding, locks onto Aiko.

"Sora," Daichi says, his voice sharp and commanding. "What are you doing here?"

"I… I was just—"

"Enough," Daichi cuts him off, his tone brooking no argument. His eyes shift to Aiko, who has frozen in place, her hands clasped tightly in front of her.

"You shouldn't be here, girl," Daichi says, his words laced with disdain. "Know your place."

Aiko lowers her head, her playful demeanor evaporating under the weight of his gaze. Her small frame seems to shrink, and she murmurs a quiet apology.

Sora stands, his fists clenched at his sides. "Father, she's my friend," he protests, his voice trembling with both fear and defiance.

"She is the daughter of a servant," Daichi snaps, his eyes narrowing. "You are a Hoshino. You do not lower yourself to their level. Do not let me catch you fraternizing with the help again."

Daichi's words strike like a blow, leaving Sora stunned. He glances at Aiko, who meets his gaze for a fleeting moment before she's led away by one of the household staff. Her eyes glisten with unshed tears, and the hurt etched on her face carves itself into Sora's memory.

Daichi places a firm hand on Sora's shoulder, his grip heavy with authority. "You have responsibilities, Sora. You cannot afford distractions. Remember who you are."

The garden grows silent as Daichi walks away, leaving young Sora standing alone by the pond. The koi fish circles lazily in the water, oblivious to the tension that lingers in the air.

Sora stares at the rippling surface, his reflection distorted and fragmented, just like the feelings swirling within him. For the first time, the weight of his family's expectations presses down on him, and the carefree warmth of his childhood begins to slip away.

---

The vivid scene dissolves like smoke, and Sora is thrust back into the present. He gasps for air, clutching the edge of his desk for support as the last remnants of the memory fade. His heart pounds in his chest, and a single name escapes his lips:

"Aiko."

The name feels like a key unlocking a door long sealed. The memory, though fragmented, is undeniable. She wasn't just a fleeting part of his past—she was someone important. Someone he was meant to remember.

The realization sends a wave of conflicting emotions crashing over him. Who is Aiko to him? And why was she erased from his life?

Sora's gaze hardens as he looks toward his terminal. If the Unity Network could suppress memories like this, what else had it stolen from him?

For the first time in years, a spark of rebellion ignites within him.

---

Sora's gaze shifts to his terminal. The Unity Network is designed to control, suppress, and erase unwanted thoughts. What if this memory was one of those erased? What else has been taken from him?

He sits back at the terminal, determination hardening his expression. His fingers hover over the keys. He begins sifting through encrypted files, searching for anything—any trace of the anomalies mentioned by his father, the corrupted drone, or even the name Aiko.

But every attempt is blocked by layers of restricted access, each denial fueling his resolve. The Unity Network, once a symbol of order and control in his mind, now feels like a cage.

Sora leans back, his thoughts racing. For the first time, he begins to see the cracks in the world he's known all his life. And in those cracks, he senses a truth waiting to be uncovered—a truth that begins and ends with Aiko.

The chapter ends with Sora standing by the window, gazing out at the city below, the spark of rebellion slowly igniting in his heart.
