Chapter 10 - [9]: The Ruiner Has Entered The Stage

Serafine stood on the cold, unforgiving stone platform, her wrists bound by thick ropes. She couldn't believe it.

'They turned on me so fast.'

Her life was supposed to be dedicated to Aurelia, spreading peace, love, and all that saintly goodness, yet here she was, on the verge of being beheaded for, well, apparently not being the saintess at all.

Oh, the irony.

She was on the execution block, her mind racing as the crowd of believers gathered in front of her, their faces twisted in anger. The same people who had once prayed at her feet were now clamoring for her blood. And for what? A little mix-up with the soul-magic? A simple error in celestial paperwork?

"You really believe you're the real saintess?" one of the priests sneered, holding a scroll in his hand. "Turns out, there was an error in the divine ledger. You're nothing but a fraud."

'An error in the ledger? Are they serious?' Serafine thought, rolling her eyes internally. A mistake. A whole mistake!

It wasn't her fault her soul hadn't been marked right. She'd been doing her best, albeit with some slight distractions... like a lot of distractions—but still! This was absurd. She could hear the crowd murmuring in disbelief, some of them shaking their heads, others visibly enraged.

"Oh no, you're not. You can't be real." One woman in the crowd shouted. "I knew something wasn't right about her!"

Another man shouted, "She never healed my warts! I knew she wasn't the one!"

Serafine stifled a laugh, looking around at the absurdity of it all. 'Warts? Really? That's the evidence you got?'

The priest in charge, an old man with a spectacularly impressive beard, pointed dramatically at her, his finger shaking in fury. "This woman, this imposter has deceived all of you for years! She's nothing but a fraud!"

Serafine opened her mouth, ready to defend herself, but one of the priests beat her to it. "Enough! She's already admitted her guilt."

Serafine blinked. "What? I didn't—when did I—?!"

One of the priests nodded sagely. "We know all your secrets, dear saintess. You can't hide behind that façade any longer."

'Wait, what secrets?'

How had it all gone so wrong? One moment, she was enjoying the perks of her position, blessing people, attending galas, dodging awkward marriage proposals from the prince, and now... she was about to be beheaded for being the wrong person entirely.

'How fast they were willing to kill me', she thought. 'Seriously, one tiny mistake, and boom, decapitation. The medieval period really sucked, huh.'

She thought about how they had raised her. She had been the chosen one in their eyes, nurtured and adored, but now? Now they were ready to rip her life away over a clerical error. 'Okay, okay. Maybe it was a big error, but still... come on, guys.'

From the back of the crowd, someone shouted, "I knew it! She never even glowed like the real saintess!"

"What is that supposed to mean? I'm sorry I don't glow like a walking, talking glow stick!" She threw her hands up, exasperated. "Can we all just calm down and think this through—"

But it was too late.

"Enough!" shouted the priest. "Prepare her for execution!"

The crowd began to chant, their voices rising in anger. "Behead the fraud! Behead the fraud!"

'Oh, great', Serafine thought, feeling the rope biting into her skin. 'This is it, huh? This is how I go down?'

The executioner, a big burly man with an axe that could probably slice through a mountain, stepped forward, preparing to do his duty. But first, he had a question. "Do you have any last words?"

Last words? What could she even say? Nothing came to mind, except for a long string of curses, but she wasn't sure how well that would go over.

"Uhm..." She cleared her throat. "Well, fuck it, I guess. Can we get this over with? I've had a really weird day."

The crowd gasped at her audacity, but she didn't care. She had died before. What's one more time?

And with that, the axe swung.

Darkness.

Suddenly, Serafine groaned.

She didn't know where she was, but it felt... hot. Really hot.

Like melting in the sun hot. She opened her eyes and blinked, squinting against the glaring light. There was a stone altar above her, and the sky above seemed so... unreasonably bright. The heat was unbearable.

"Did I... did I survive that?"

Before she could even sit up, a voice greeted her. A voice that sent a chill down her spine, making her wish she was back in that nice, cool execution chamber.

"Welcome, The Sun Who Burns The World."

Serafine stared up at the mysterious figure who had spoken. 'The what now?'

The figure before her was tall, with flowing robes and an ethereal presence that made her skin tingle. "I am the one who watches over the burning sun."

Serafine blinked, slowly sitting up, her face scrunching in confusion. "Wait. Wait. What? Burning sun? You mean I didn't actually—? I'm not dead?"

"Well," the figure said with a smirk, "technically, you were. But not anymore."

'I was?' Serafine stared, wide-eyed. "You revived me?"

The figure nodded. "Yes. And now, you face your new purpose. You are the Sun Who Burns the World."

Serafine stared at them, then glanced at her definitely-not-decapitated neck. "I'm sorry, who burns the what?"

"You, O Radiant One," they said solemnly. "The destroyer of nations. The scion of chaos. The—"

"Yeah, yeah, I get the gist." Serafine sat up, rubbing her temples. "Okay, pause. You're telling me I'm not the Saintess?"

"No, O Blazing Majesty."

"So all that 'chosen savior' nonsense was...?"

"A misunderstanding, O Herald of Ruin."

'Honestly, what the fuck?' She cursed inside out of habit.

She glanced down at her robes—yep, still in the same outfit, as if she hadn't just been executed mere moments ago. How long had she been lying here, exactly? She tried to get up, but her body felt heavy, like it was still recovering from an ordeal.

Was I knocked out for that long?

Looking around, she realized she was lying on a grassy hill, the sun blazing down on her like it was trying to melt her into the earth. The wind rustled through the trees, but everything felt off. There was something... odd about this place. The air had a strange hum to it.

She was about to stand up when—

What the heck was that?! It was like a robotic voice in her head or maybe it was a glitch in the Matrix. Whatever it was, it was definitely not the voice of some celestial god.

"Uh... Hello? Is there a cosmic being I should be speaking to here? Maybe an AI or a celestial assistant?" she muttered to herself, unsure if she was starting to lose her mind. "Because I've definitely had enough of strange voices lately."

A small blinking holographic display appeared in front of her, much to her surprise.
