Chapter 2 - An Extraordinary Day

"My day of birth was filled with dread, the heavens wept such endless tears, the sky forever turned to blue. No one knew, no one could understand, no one could fathom why things were so different, on that...extraordinary day."

They said there was an unprecedented and miserable weather that day; such endless rain it felt like the buildings would be swept away in its ferocity. The forecast failed to predict it; the news stations were baffled; nothing suggested such a weather. It started around seven in the morning on Veterans' Day on a particularly temperate day of 46°C. It was a beautiful day, clear skies, beautiful weather, many people staying home to enjoy a day off, others commuting all the same to head to work. A man here, walking the street idly listening to music as he entered the New York terminal. Another standing in a dirty train station at 59th St Lexington Ave waiting for the 2-train arriving in 6 minutes. Yet another was sitting on the Bx35 bus idly observing the shifting scenery as he headed to the Shoprite on Bruckner Blvd. The streets were bustling, people walking absentmindedly in congested sidewalks ignoring the occasional beggars sleeping against a building on the side of the sidewalk. Cars turning and stopping at intersections and buses occasionally skipping stops with people waiting on them much to their annoyance. Tens of thousands dying in remote countries oversees, another multitude being born to replace them. Suddenly thunder boomed across the entire state of New York, in a completely clear sky. The clouds began to gather and thicken, the light darkened, an inexplicable chill suddenly permeating the bodies of the sparsely dressed citizens. They all look up with utter bewilderment as heavy rain began to drench each and every one of their bodies as they scrambled to find shelter. The domesticated animals became restless, dogs began to bark wildly, cattle ran amok, while the wild animals became still, cowering to find shelter. Predator and prey abandoned their squabbles and ran beside one another in fear, while packs scattered. Lightening flashed, and dark clouds blotted out the sun as far as the visible horizon; this was at a state level, a sudden state of emergency. And on that strange day a child was born in a small unimportant hospital in downtown Brooklyn. The date was November 11, 2003.
