Chereads / The Secretary ; A romantic tale / Chapter 16 - The Stalking

Chapter 16 - The Stalking

As I sat at my desk, trying to focus on my work, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. Brian's words kept echoing in my mind, and I couldn't help but wonder what he was thinking.

Just as I was starting to get lost in thought, Sophia walked into the office, her eyes scanning the room until they landed on me. She smiled, a cold, calculating smile on her face, and I felt a shiver run down my spine.

"Emily, can I talk to you for a minute?" Sophia asked, her voice dripping with sweetness.

I hesitated, unsure of what Sophia wanted, but something about her tone put me on edge. "What is it, Sophia?" I asked, trying to sound calm.

Sophia sauntered over to my desk, her eyes locked on mine. "I just wanted to warn you about Brian," she said, her voice low and conspiratorial. "He's not the man you think he is. He's ruthless and cunning, and he'll stop at nothing to get what he wants."

I felt a surge of anger at Sophia's words, but I tried to remain calm. "I think I can handle myself, Sophia," I said, trying to sound confident.

Sophia laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. "You have no idea what you're getting yourself into, Emily. But I'll give you some advice: be careful. Brian is not a man to be trifled with."

With that, Sophia turned and walked out of the office, leaving me feeling shaken and unsure. What was Sophia's game? And what did she want from me?

As I sat at my desk, trying to process Sophia's words, I couldn't help but wonder what Brian wasu hiding. Was he really the ruthless and cunning man Sophia claimed he was? Or was Sophia just trying to sabotage our relationship?

I didn't have any answers, but I knew one thing: I was going to find out the truth about Brian.

After the day's work Brian insisted at dropping me off at home and i agreed besides i had some questions for him.

As Brian pulled up to my apartment building, I turned to him, my mind racing with thoughts of Sophia's visit.

"Hey, can I ask you something?" I said, my voice firm but controlled.

Brian looked at me, his eyes questioning. "Of course, what is it?"

I took a deep breath, my words spilling out in a rush. "Sophia stopped by the office today. She warned me about you, told me you're ruthless and cunning. What's going on, Brian? What did you do to her?"

Brian's expression changed, his eyes narrowing slightly as he shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

"Sophia's just trying to cause trouble," he said, his voice low and even. "She's still bitter about our breakup, and she's looking for ways to sabotage our relationship."

I raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "Sabotage our relationship? You mean, the one we don't even have?"

Brian's eyes locked onto mine, his gaze intense. "Emily, I told you, I'm not sure what's going on between us. But I do know that Sophia's not someone to be trusted. She's manipulative and cunning, and she'll stop at nothing to get what she wants."

I studied Brian's face, trying to read between the lines. Was he telling the truth, or was he just trying to cover his tracks?

"I don't know what to believe," I said finally, my voice barely above a whisper.

Brian's expression softened, and he reached out, his hand brushing against mine.

"Believe me, Emily," he said, his voice low and husky. "I'm not the man Sophia makes me out to be. I'm just... complicated. And I need you to trust me."

I looked at Brian, his eyes burning with intensity. Could I trust him? Or was I just blinded by my feelings for him?

As we sat there, the tension between us was electric. I could feel the weight of Brian's gaze on me, and I knew he was waiting for me to respond.

Slowly, I turned my hand over, and our palms touched. The spark of electricity that ran through me was undeniable.

Brian's eyes locked onto mine, and I could see the desire burning within them. Without a word, he leaned in, his lips brushing against mine.

The kiss was soft and gentle, but it sent shivers down my spine. I felt myself melting into him, our lips moving in perfect sync.

As we kissed, the argument, Sophia, everything else faded away. All that mattered was the connection between us, the spark that ignited whenever we touched.

Brian's hands wrapped around me, pulling me closer as he deepened the kiss. I felt myself getting lost in him, our hearts beating as one.

For a moment, nothing else mattered. We were lost in our own little world, where the only thing that existed was the love and desire we shared.

As we finally broke apart for air, Brian's eyes locked onto mine, and I knew in that moment, I was his, and he was mine.

As we sat there, catching our breath, Brian's eyes never left mine. I could see the intensity of his gaze, the passion that still burned within him.

"I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice husky with emotion. "I didn't mean to argue with you."

I smiled, feeling a sense of calm wash over me. "I'm sorry too," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. "I just don't know what's going on with Sophia."

Brian's expression turned serious, his eyes clouding over. "Sophia's just trying to cause trouble," he said, his voice firm. "She's not used to not getting what she wants, and she's not going to give up easily."

I nodded, feeling a sense of understanding. "I know," I said. "But it's hard not to wonder what's going on between you two."

Brian's eyes locked onto mine, and I could see the sincerity in his gaze. "There's nothing going on between us, Emily," he said, his voice firm. "I promise you that. Sophia's just a part of my past, and I'm trying to move on."

I smiled, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. "I trust you," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Brian's eyes softened, and he leaned in, his lips brushing against mine. "I'm glad," he whispered, his voice husky with emotion.

As we sat there, wrapped in each other's arms, I knew that I had made the right decision. I trusted Brian, and I knew that he would never hurt me.

But i still couldn't shake off the feeling that Sophia was still a threat. She was a woman scorned, and she would stop at nothing to get what she wanted.

And what she wanted was Brian.

Brian walked me to the door, his arm around my shoulders. "I'll pick you up tomorrow at 7," he said, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "We'll go out for dinner, just the two of us."

I smiled, feeling a sense of excitement. "I'd like that," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Brian leaned in, his lips brushing against mine. "I'll see you tomorrow," he whispered, before turning and walking back to his car.

As I watched him drive away, I couldn't help but feel a sense of happiness. I had never felt this way about anyone before, and I couldn't wait to see where things would go with Brian.

But as I turned to go inside, I noticed a piece of paper on the ground. I picked it up, and my heart sank as I saw the words scrawled on it: "Stay away from him."

I felt a shiver run down my spine as I realized that Sophia had been here, watching me. I crumpled the paper in my hand, feeling a sense of anger and fear.

Who was Sophia to threaten me? And what would she do next?

I felt a chill run down my spine as I realized that Sophia had been watching me, and now she was stalking me. I tried to shake off the feeling of unease, but it only seemed to intensify as I thought about how vulnerable I was. I quickly entered inside and locked the door.

I didn't have Brian's phone number, and I couldn't call him to warn him about Sophia's threatening note. I felt a sense of panic rising up inside me as I realized that I was completely alone in this situation.

I looked around my apartment, feeling a sense of paranoia wash over me. Was Sophia watching me right now? Had she been following me?

I tried to calm myself down, telling myself that I was being ridiculous, but the fear lingered. I knew that I had to do something, but I didn't know what.

As I stood there, frozen with fear, I heard a knock at the door. My heart skipped a beat as I wondered who it could be. Was it Sophia, come to confront me?

I hesitated for a moment, wondering whether I should answer the door or not. But then, I heard a voice calling out to me.

"Emily, it's Josh. Can I come in?"

I let out a sigh of relief as I realized it was just Josh. I opened the door, and Josh's concerned expression greeted me.

"Hey, what's wrong?" he asked, noticing the look of fear on my face .

I stood in the doorway, my hand still grasping the doorknob. "What's up, Josh?" I asked, trying to sound casual despite the turmoil brewing inside me.

Josh's eyes narrowed slightly, his expression concerned. "I saw Brian drop you off, and I wanted to make sure you're okay," he said, his voice low and gentle.

I forced a smile, trying to reassure him. "I'm fine, Josh. Just a long day, that's all."

Josh's gaze lingered on mine, as if searching for something. But I kept my expression neutral, not wanting to reveal anything.

"Okay, if you're sure you're fine," Josh said finally, his voice tinged with skepticism. "But if you ever need to talk, I'm here for you, Emily."

I nodded, feeling a pang of guilt for shutting him out. "Thanks, Josh. I appreciate it."

With that, Josh turned and walked away, leaving me feeling more isolated than ever. I closed the door behind him, my mind racing with thoughts of Sophia's threatening note and Brian's mysterious past.

I felt a surge of unease as I realized that Josh had been waiting for me outside my apartment. How did he even know where I lived? I had never given him my address, and he had never been to my apartment before.

A shiver ran down my spine as I thought about the implications. Had Josh been following me? Was he spying on me?

I tried to shake off the feeling of paranoia, telling myself that I was being ridiculous. But the seed of doubt had been planted, and I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off.

I looked around my apartment, feeling a sense of unease. Had Josh been watching me from afar? Did he have some kind of obsession with me?

I knew I had to confront Josh about this, but a part of me was scared. What if he had been stalking me? What if he was capable of something more sinister?

I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. I needed to get to the bottom of this, and I needed to do it now.

The next morning i got to office very early. I stepped out of the elevator and onto the quiet office floor. The early morning hours were always peaceful, and I appreciated the solitude. I made my way to my office, flipping on the lights and settling into my chair.

As I sat at my desk and sipped my coffee trying to shake off the feeling of fatigue that had been plaguing me all night. I had barely slept because my mind was racing with the thought of Sophia's threatening note and Josh suspicious behaviour, I heard the sound of footsteps outside my office. I looked up to see Brian walking towards me, a look of surprise on his face.

"Emily, what are you doing here so early?" he asked, his eyes scanning my face.

I raised an eyebrow, curious. "I could ask you the same thing," I replied. "What brings you in so early?"

Brian smiled, his eyes on mine. "I have a board meeting later today, and I needed to review some files beforehand," he explained.

I nodded, feeling a sense of relief that it was just a normal work-related reason. Brian walked into my office, his eyes locked onto mine.

"You're in early," he repeated. "Everything okay?"

I tried to hide it, but Brian's keen eyes picked up on my exhaustion immediately. "You look like you've been up all night," he said, his voice filled with concern.

I sighed, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. "I didn't sleep well," I admitted, trying to brush it off.

But Brian wasn't having it. "What's wrong?" he asked, his eyes locked onto mine.

I hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to bring up the note. But something about Brian's kind and concerned expression put me at ease.

"I found a note on my doorstep last night," I said finally, my voice barely above a whisper.

Brian's expression changed in an instant, his eyes narrowing into slits. "What did it say?" he asked, his voice low and menacing.

I swallowed hard, feeling a sense of fear wash over me. "It said 'stay away from him'," I replied, my voice shaking slightly.

Brian's face darkened, his jaw clenched in anger. "I'll take care of it," he said, his voice firm and resolute.

I felt a sense of relief wash over me, knowing that Brian was going to protect me. But at the same time, I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was in grave danger.

Brian's expression softened, and he nodded. "For now, I think it's best if you stay with me," he said, his voice firm but gentle. "My penthouse has top-notch security, and you'll be safe there."

I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to do. But the thought of going back to my apartment, where Sophia had left that threatening note, made me feel uneasy.

"Okay," I said finally, nodding. "I'll stay with you."

Brian's face relaxed, and he smiled. "Good," he said. "I'll feel better knowing you're safe."

He walked over to me and took my hand, his touch sending a spark of electricity through my body. "Let's get your things, and we'll head to my place," he said.

I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. For now, I was safe, and that's all that mattered.

As we walked out of the office, Brian's arm around my shoulders, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude towards him. He was going out of his way to protect me, and I knew that I could trust him.

But as we stepped into the elevator, I caught a glimpse of Josh watching us from across the room. His eyes narrowed, and I could sense a hint of anger emanating from him.

I felt a shiver run down my spine as I realized that Josh might not be as harmless as I thought.
