Chapter 6 - Start of the Build

Sweat on brow, hands toil,

Each task, a step to climb high,

Persistence blooms.

==================================================================

I had already decided my course of action for the 1st week of living in this place, and a lot of those within the checklist have already been done.

I have secured a piece of land, heck, it even has a field that i can use to cultivate vegetables and grains. I have also bought necessary equipment to begin the development of land around the place that I have taken. Next, I have also drafted a plan way before I decided to retire hence I am admiring at the drawing that I have once drawn on my free time.

[Hmmmmm...Is this even possible?]

There's a lot of things that I have to keep in mind if I want to build a house from scratch and one of those is the quality of wood that you are going to use as the main post.

[Damn... I completely forgot about that]

Unlike a concrete block house or a stone house, which I had originally planned to do, a wooden house has very good thermal and sound insulation. The humidity control is carried out in a natural manner, the air is healthier and as a consequence there are fewer microbes and fungi.

Putting it on a financial aspect, wooden house constructions help you save energy, because wood is a naturally insulating material and there's a forest nearby which I can use to obtain the said materials for housing.

The Nordic countries back at "Earth" understood that fact earlier than those of Central Europe hence used a lot of wood for home constructions.

Building a wooden house can be a complex task that requires planning, skill, and experience. While some people with carpentry skills might find it relatively easier, for the average person, building a wooden house can be challenging. And---

The example of an average person...is me. Someone with zero carpentry experience, nor was I an architect in my previous life. I was simply an office worker...well...not anymore.

Here are some factors to consider:

Design and Planning: Designing a house and creating a detailed plan is essential before starting construction. This involves understanding the necessary permits, creating architectural drawings, determining the dimensions and layout, as well as making decisions about materials, insulation, and other crucial aspects.

[Is that why you are asking if you need a permit to build a house?] (Ernie)

The town mayor visits early in the morning bringing me a flask full of coffee. So while drinking a cup of it, I asked him what I was thinking.

[Yes, back when I was living at the city there was need for permit due to the space issue within the city. Does that apply here?]

[Hmmm, it is not necessary unless you are going to build a barn that would house poultry or cows. A horse stable also applies that you need a permit when building, but those only applies to places near the capital. As for these parts...totally not needed at all. You can just build one right off the bat, no questions needed] (Ernie)

I was right, there really was no need to stress about permits when you are at the countryside.

Foundation Work: Constructing a solid foundation is critical to the stability of the entire house.

Modern cement is rather non-existent on this world. Instead, the people who construct houses here that uses stone would use mortar. It would act as a primitive cement to bind these stones together, thus creating a structure that the builder would have in mind.

That technique has been used all throughout the entire European country back then and if I am correct should be prominent within the countryside areas of this world due to its durability.

Then framing, roofing, and so many more....Haaaaah. It is tiring and exhausting to think that a house has a lot of things that must work otherwise it will be just a box.

After that then you will have to deal with the finishing and the main thing....what should be put inside your house.

While building a wooden house might seem overwhelming, it can be a rewarding and fulfilling project. Depending on the complexity of the design, the required skills, access to resources, and experience, the level of difficulty can vary. Consulting with professionals or experienced builders is highly recommended for successful construction.

Surely, there must be a carpenter at the town that could help me. This project is impossible to do by solo as I have no idea what to start.

[I guess this is the part where I say I should leave it to the experts] Yep, I have given up on doing this on my own.

[If you're looking that troubled just thinking about it, maybe you should consider getting some help?] (Ernie)

The town mayor sipped his coffee casually while watching me drown in my own overthinking.

[Help, huh…?]

I had been planning to do this all by myself, but realistically, building a house was a huge endeavor, especially for someone with zero experience. I might be able to brute force my way through, but it would take an eternity, and I'd probably make a ton of mistakes along the way.

And mistakes when building are expensive...

[Yeah. The village has carpenters, y'know. If you want, I can introduce you to a few. Even if you just ask for some guidance, it'd make things easier for you.] (Ernie)

That… actually made a lot of sense.

[Alright. That does sound like a good idea. I should probably learn from someone who actually knows what they're doing rather than making everything up as I go.]

[Smart choice, lad. No shame in learning from others.] (Ernie)

As I sipped the last of my coffee, I felt a bit lighter. Maybe this wouldn't be as impossible as I first thought.

Now, it was time to put my plans into action.
