Chapter 26 - CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX: In the Shadows

The dungeon was vast, its walls shimmering with an eerie, pulsating energy that seemed to hum with life. The air was thick and oppressive, each step echoing ominously in the cavernous space. The Devil's Shadows entered cautiously, their weapons drawn and senses sharp.

JC had already stepped inside, blending into the darkness. He stood near the entrance, leaning casually against the wall, his arms crossed. His scarred face remained calm and stoic, but his single open eye carefully tracked the movements of his former team.

He didn't dare move further into the dungeon—not yet.

---

Watching from the Shadows

JC knew that the others would eventually spot him. It was inevitable. But for now, he wanted to see how much they had grown.

Angel moved like a shadow herself, her dual blades gleaming as she scouted ahead. Jackson walked behind her, holding the staff he had taken from JC, his eyes scanning the area for any sign of danger. Mark stayed in the center, his shield raised, ready to defend the team at a moment's notice. Lissy brought up the rear, her hands glowing faintly with fire magic, her expression focused and determined.

They've improved, JC thought to himself. Their movements were more precise, their reactions quicker. But the monsters in this dungeon weren't ordinary—they wouldn't be enough.

---

The First Encounter

As if on cue, a low growl echoed through the dungeon. The group froze, their weapons at the ready.

From the shadows emerged a massive beast, its body covered in jagged scales and its eyes glowing a deep crimson. It was a Shadow Fang, a high-ranked monster known for its speed and ferocity.

Angel charged first, her blades flashing as she slashed at the creature's legs. The Shadow Fang roared, swiping at her with its massive claws, but Mark was there, blocking the attack with his shield.

Jackson raised the staff, summoning a glowing barrier to protect the group. "Lissy, now!" he shouted.

Lissy nodded, her hands igniting with flames as she launched a powerful fireball at the creature's head. The explosion sent the Shadow Fang reeling, but it quickly recovered, its glowing eyes narrowing in rage.

JC watched silently, his expression unreadable. He felt the urge to step in, but he held himself back. They need to handle this on their own, he reminded himself.

---

A Growing Danger

The Shadow Fang wasn't alone. From the dark corners of the dungeon, smaller creatures began to emerge—spindly, shadow-like figures that moved unnaturally fast.

"More of them!" Mark shouted, slamming his shield into the ground to create a protective barrier.

Angel gritted her teeth. "We need to finish this quickly!"

Jackson channeled energy into the staff, summoning a burst of light magic that illuminated the dungeon and sent the shadow creatures scattering. "Stay close! Don't let them surround us!"

Lissy's flames burned brighter, her frustration evident as she hurled fireball after fireball. "There's too many of them!"

JC's fingers twitched. He could feel the energy in the room shifting. The monsters were adapting, growing stronger. If they weren't careful, the Devil's Shadows would be overwhelmed.

---

Making a Choice

As the battle raged on, JC finally pushed off the wall, stepping out of the shadows. His presence was subtle at first, but as the monsters seemed to sense him, they froze, their glowing eyes fixating on him.

Lissy noticed the sudden shift in the creatures' behavior and turned, her breath catching as she saw him. "JC?"

He didn't respond, his gaze locked on the Shadow Fang. Slowly, he raised a hand, and a faint glow began to emanate from his palm.

"Keep fighting," he said, his voice cold and commanding. "I'm not here to save you."

With a flick of his wrist, a wave of light magic surged forward, obliterating several of the smaller creatures in an instant. The Shadow Fang snarled, its attention now fully on him.

The others stared in shock, but JC didn't wait for their reactions. He stepped back into the shadows, blending into the dungeon's dark corners once more.

---

A Moment of Clarity

The battle continued, but the tide had turned. The Devil's Shadows fought with renewed vigor, the presence of JC giving them an unspoken boost of confidence.

When the Shadow Fang finally fell, collapsing to the ground with a thunderous crash, the group stood panting, their weapons still at the ready.

"Was that…?" Jackson began, glancing at the spot where JC had been standing.

"It was him," Lissy said quietly, her hands trembling as she extinguished the flames in her palms.

Angel frowned. "Why didn't he stay?"

Mark sheathed his sword, his brow furrowed. "Maybe he wanted to see if we could handle it."

Lissy's eyes lingered on the shadows where JC had disappeared. Why are you hiding from us? she wondered.

Moving Forward

The group pressed on, more determined than ever. They didn't know why JC was there or what his true intentions were, but one thing was clear: he was watching.

And as they delved deeper into the dungeon, they couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something much larger.
