Chapter 35 - Arrival of the Ember Dragon

BAM!

The door was kicked open. Guards in knights' armour scampered inside the building and stared at the inhabitants who wore shock on their faces.

"The dragon has arrived!"Said one of the guards in a loud voice. "Time for you to slay it!".

Rhett exchanged one last glance between Ash and Haicor before he turned to the knight and said:

"Lead the way!".

The guard nodded and walked out of the building, in hurried footsteps, Rhett following behind, his shield and sword firmly held in hand, a sigh coming out of his mouth, his face determined.

Outside wasn't so bucolic, it was more of a mess, the citizens of shaiiyeru were running helter skelter, looking to the skies. Knights urged them to enter a large building made of bricks. It seemed to be a safe harbor or something like that.

Rhett suddenly became anxious, what was he against?. Nothing seemed to alleviate his anxiousness and then, just when he thought it was worse, he heard a very loud growl he could have sworn it came out of a large microphone.

But it didn't. It sounded like the voice of a dragon. Rhett gritted his teeth and made his grip on his sword stronger.

Up ahead were Knights, lined up, swords and shields in their hands. Rhett smiled, he frankly had thought he would be taking on the dragon all alone. Well, this was some relief. The line of knights soon parted as they approached and went into it, all staring at Rhett in disdain.

Well, some wore helmets while others just wore visors which Rhett didn't give a hell about. The damp and woody stares he was receiving was seriously irritating him. He was like:

'I'll be risking my life by trying to slay an Ember Dragon and all you guys can do is to give me mean looks?'.

Finally, with quite a nod, Rhett agreed that their brains were deprived of common sense.

The guards he was following took left and then he was facing the king's palace. The sight feeling all too majestic to Rhett it felt abnormal. He could see a figure standing on what looked like the porch, or was it a verandah, well, language differed but it was all the same.

Rhett squinted his eyes and he saw king vongarth, his fat protruding belly well intact, staring intently, with owl-like eyes, at him. When Rhett was nearer to him he extended a hand.

Rhett paused and gave out an incredibly sarcastic smile.

"Clearly as you can see, my hands are occupied".

King vongarth twisted his neck to one side and made a face.

"King of the dragon slayers, hope you're all prepared?", he asked.

"Clearly I am ,to do what you ought to have done as king of the dragon hunters", Rhett ejaculated.

King vongarth giggled - in a manly way by the way.

"Ha!", he said. "We're not far from the same I must say, you slay dragons while I hunt them. You are king of the dragon slayers while I'm King of dragon hunters", he paused and gazing intently into the eyes of Rhett he added. "Aren't we the same?".

Rhett made to reply but the loud THUD! of a tree distracted him. He turned backwards and saw Ash and Haicor running towards his way, Dhamsel too behind them, she was running but in a 'royal' manner, one which made her, according to Rhett, look like a duck trying to run to safety. He even smiled at the thought.

More trees fell and Rhett, now looking around him, saw that the place was now more anachronistic, it was like the synonym of rambunctious.

Ash breathed hard and so did Haicor and well, even Dhamsel, but in her 'royal' manner.

King vongarth now walked closer to Rhett and touched him by the shoulder.

"Our fate lies in your hands",he said.

Rhett almost became angry.

"But why did the Ember Dragon come, why?It feels odd and I've always wondered. Why is it coming", Rhett ejaculated, turning to face King vongarth who smiled and said:

"Well, it's coming because I summoned it, to possess its spirit gem and attain, what I've been trying to achieve for years, the rank of immortal".

Rhett fumed greatly after hearing that.

"Fool!", he shouted. "Blatant fool!, why, you son of a-".

"Fire!".

Archers filled the rooftops of the houses, their bows perched to the skies, their faces hidden with helmets and visors. Rhett looked forward, he could see a glimpse, yet it felt like he had been staring at it for a whole month, yellow coloured wings, drawing every morsel of the wind and sending it towards Rhett.

Haicor gasped, Ash gaped, Dhamsel's teeths were almost out, king vongarth was almost sweating. Rhett?, he stepped forward, brandishing his sword in the air, the wind now driven to bite into his face. It felt like biffs, but he shook it off. His face now a mix of a frown and a smile. His legs quivered and he shook his head sideways to shake away any sign of fear.

The archers had already started firing arrows at the dragon, one they couldn't see clearly, one that it felt like it was growing out of the wind and dashing into oblivion.

Words can hardly describe this scene, Rhett, standing, waiting, in anticipation of the Ember Dragon.

The arrows shot into the skies, and then they could already feel its presence, the wind shot towards Rhett who staggered back a little. Guards in knights' armour had already filled his front, infact, they seemed to surround him, their shields positioned up to the air.

Rhett, already bracing himself for something big, saw, with such vivid scenery, a yellow dragon sprouting from under a tree. Its wings looked like they were made of larva, massive stuff, the presence alone making the ground to shake.

Rhett inhaled deeply and exhaled. The dragon's face reminded him of large ones he used to watch on television back on earth. Its nostrils looking big enough it could sniff him in.

And then, Rhett saw, to his surprise, a figure silhouetted in a cloak, its boots and a bit of its trousers, hanging almost loosely on the dragon.

Rhett was stupefied and so was Ash who opened his mouth in astonishment. Of course he knew about Ember Dragon riders, but he hadn't known this one was coming with one.
