Damn it! I've long known that the old lady (the machine gun) has a penchant for jamming and malfunctioning, but I never expected to be this unlucky now.
Lambert had emptied a cartridge bag and was reloading. His hands were trembling uncontrollably as he struggled to load the bullets.
Shao Ming watched the mutants charging towards them, realizing that he didn't know how to troubleshoot the gun either. This was truly a disaster.
Both machine guns had stopped firing, and the mutants were charging across the runway at an extremely fast pace.
If they passed the runway, there would only be a taxiway in the middle, and the distance was no more than a few dozen meters at most.
Shao Ming punched the receiver of the old lady hard, and to his surprise, the gun started working again.
He quickly pulled the trigger, and the machine gun resumed its rapid fire, spraying bullets at the mutants.
The helicopter had started up, and its propeller was spinning rapidly.
All safety regulations were thrown out of the window at this moment.
If the mutants were sensitive to sound, then the small "position" of the four of them was like someone shouting through two hundred loudspeakers, "Time to eat! Time to eat!"
The noise of the helicopter's propeller, the gunfire, and the mutants' roars was deafening.
To be precise, the three people in the vehicle were almost deafened by the noise.
However, at this moment, the Cessna small plane beside the helicopter started to move.
None of the three noticed that Wellington had left the helicopter and got into the Cessna.
Wellington started the engine and taxied onto the runway.
"Sorry, guys," Wellington said in the cockpit, "Taking you with this small plane might prevent me from reaching Austria. The train is just too slow."
As he spoke, he took out the photo in his pocket and looked at it.
"Thank you so much," Wellington glanced at the three people still fighting hard, "Without your cover, I wouldn't have been able to get the plane. I'll always remember you guys in my heart."
Shao Ming was firing at the mutants when he noticed the Cessna 172 accelerating and rushing onto the runway out of the corner of his eye.
He stared at the plane in disbelief. Wellington was sitting in the cockpit.
That old guy had really run away.
Due to the obstruction of the helicopter's line of sight, Shao Ming didn't notice Wellington starting the plane. Moreover, with the noise of gunfire and the helicopter's propeller, he didn't hear the sound of any other plane starting either.
Shao Ming released the trigger and kicked Lambert, who was shooting like crazy.
"Stop shooting! Stop fucking shooting!" Shao Ming shouted at the top of his lungs, "We've been tricked. That son of a bitch has run away!"
Lambert stopped shooting and turned his head to see the small plane accelerate towards the end of the runway.
"Ah?" Lambert couldn't believe his eyes.
Feng Yusheng reacted quickly. She threw the shotgun onto the back seat and rushed into the driver's seat.
Fortunately, the Cessna 172 was a four - seat single - wing propeller plane and didn't require a long runway to take off.
When it was almost at the end of the runway, Wellington pulled the control lever and soared into the sky.
Shao Ming was about to turn the machine gun and fire at Wellington when he saw the mutants rushing onto the taxiway, only fifty meters away from them.
He cursed all the swear words he could think of in his heart and vented his anger on the mutants.
Feng Yusheng inserted the key after several attempts and started the engine. She made a turn and drove towards the outside of the airport.
Because of the obstruction of the hangar, the vehicle had to drive along the taxiway first before driving out of the hangar.
She almost stepped the accelerator into the fuel tank.
Shao Ming turned the machine gun to aim at the mutants and saw Gordon running after the vehicle.
Gordon hadn't got on the vehicle yet.
The poor dog was forgotten by the three people who were busy fleeing for their lives.
"Dog! Dog!" Shao Ming shouted, patting the roof of the car.
Feng Yusheng quickly slowed down, and Gordon jumped into the vehicle.
A few seconds later, the mutants reached the helicopter.
Shao Ming turned the machine gun and fired at the fuel tanker.
Several bullets penetrated the fuel tanker and sparked. The sparks ignited the oil and gas in the fuel tanker.
Then the fuel tanker exploded.
"Boom!"
The explosion took out at least a hundred mutants, and the mutants farther away were also more or less blown to pieces with broken limbs.
Since the refueling truck was still connected to the helicopter by a refueling pipe, the explosion of the refueling truck triggered the explosion of the helicopter.
The main rotor of the helicopter was blown off and flew out. A broken rotor flew over Shao Ming's head and was stuck into the outer wall of the hangar beside him.
Feng Yusheng stepped on the accelerator and shouted, "Hold on tight!"
She drove the vehicle through a section of barbed wire and onto the land outside the airport.
If the pickup truck they had taken a few days ago had good shock absorption for comfort, then the Land Rover Defender, a pure military vehicle, had no idea what shock absorption was.
Shao Ming was jolted so much that he couldn't hold the gun firmly and had to sit back in his seat.
The Defender made another turn and drove towards the direction of the train.
Shao Ming recalled what Wellington had said and felt something was wrong.
How did he know that there must be a helicopter at Luton Airport and that there happened to be a fixed - wing plane being refueled beside the helicopter? Maybe the number of mutants Wellington mentioned was true. After all, they hardly encountered any mutants along the way. But how come there were quite a number of mutants in the airport terminal and he just happened to need a group of people to cover for him?
Wellington had scouted the place before. He couldn't take off the plane on his own without alerting the horde of zombies, nor could he take off while fighting against the horde of zombies.
His plan was perfect, except that he needed a few clueless guys to cover for him and draw the fire.
Unfortunately, Shao Ming and the others were the first batch of clueless guys that Wellington encountered.
Shao Ming punched the back of the seat hard, startling Lambert in the front seat.
Lambert didn't say anything either. Nobody expected Wellington to run away on his own.
Shao Ming looked back and saw that the mutants in the airport had been left behind.
After bumping along the country road all the way back to the train, none of the three people said a word.
"At least everyone is safe and sound," after a while, Feng Yusheng said, hugging Gordon beside her, "besides, we've brought back such powerful firepower."
"Alas..." Shao Ming sighed. Now, he could only think on the bright side.
