Chapter 61 - Chapter 57: Pilot Wellington

Shao Ming looked at Lambert beside him. Although they had gone through life and death together, he felt that this railway engineer still had a lot of things hidden from them.

Fortunately, there were no more junctions on the following journey. The train sped through the countryside and was approaching the urban area of London in less than an hour. Moreover, the several of them noticed that the closer they got to London, the fewer mutants there were in the villages and towns.

They decided to stop first and plan how to pass through London City.

"I say, why don't we find a vehicle or just walk around London," Shao Ming jumped off the train and said. "The railway system in London is so complicated. Even if we can change tracks manually, changing tracks every hundred meters, are we supposed to fight against millions of zombies?"

"Yeah," Feng Yusheng echoed. "It's not very realistic to go through London City."

Seeing that the two of them didn't want to take the train anymore, Lambert hurriedly said, "We just need to find the main railway station in London..."

"Do you know where the main station is?" Shao Ming retorted. "Have you considered how to get in and out safely among hundreds of thousands or even millions of zombies?"

Lambert was left speechless. Perhaps he hadn't thought about these questions either.

"Stop arguing, you two," Feng Yusheng looked at a place not far from the railway tracks and patted Shao Ming on the shoulder. "Look, what's that?"

Beyond several fields, a helicopter was quietly parked there.

"A helicopter?"

Although there were trees blocking the view, Shao Ming still recognized at a glance that it was a "Lynx" HC2 helicopter.

Shao Ming took out his shotgun, found a place with less obstruction to his line of sight, crouched down, and raised his scope.

Through the scope, Shao Ming saw that the door of the helicopter's cockpit was wide open, and there were some pots, bowls, and other things inside.

Shao Ming put down his shotgun and said, "Let's go and have a look."

The three of them crossed the fields, and a military-green helicopter fully came into their sight. There were fifteen small skulls painted with paint on the door of the helicopter.

Shao Ming climbed into the helicopter. There was a portable alcohol stove placed on the floor of the cabin, and several opened cans were piled up beside it. It looked like someone was still living here.

Who would live in a helicopter?

Shao Ming touched the alcohol stove. There was still some residual heat.

"There's someone alive," Shao Ming turned his head and said to the two people outside the plane.

Suddenly, Gordon stared warily at the grass not far away. Then, a man in military uniform jumped out with a gun in his hand.

To be precise, he was only wearing the underclothes of the military uniform.

The soldier was gripping an assault rifle tightly in his hand and pointed the muzzle at them.

Feng Yusheng held back Gordon, who seemed ready to pounce at any moment.

"Put down your gun! Put down your gun!" Lambert shouted hurriedly.

"Who are you..." The soldier slowly put down his gun, his eyes full of shock.

"Are you really alive?" the soldier asked.

"Have you ever seen a zombie that can talk?" Shao Ming jumped down from the helicopter and replied.

"I thought everyone was dead..." The soldier put down his rifle, his face full of joy. "I'm Second Lieutenant Wellington of the 16th Airborne Brigade, a helicopter pilot of the Army Aviation."

Shao Ming introduced their group to Wellington and asked, "What are you doing here?"

Wellington climbed into the helicopter, not feeling embarrassed at all, and started putting on his military uniform.

"About two weeks ago, after the mutation broke out, I received an order to follow the troops to London to maintain order. But later, the situation gradually got out of control."

Wellington handed a can to the three of them. "Want to eat?"

Seeing the three of them shake their heads, Wellington continued, "Within a few days, we had just set up a temporary base, and 85 percent of the people in the city had mutated. It was the same in the army. Many of my comrades had turned into monsters."

"Two days later, I and several remaining comrades received an order asking us to gather at the base, saying there was a new mission."

"I flew them to the base. There were probably still a few thousand living people there. Our superiors gave us a new mission, asking all of us to enter London City to rescue the king and the prime minister who were trapped under Buckingham Palace."

"Wait, that means," Shao Ming interrupted Wellington, "there were still troops that entered London City?"

"Not long before you came," Wellington knocked on the sign painted on the door of the cabin. "We carried out 15 reconnaissance missions for the rescue troops."

"Did you succeed?"

"Do you know what's the funniest thing?" Wellington sighed and said. "Those fools bombarded with artillery at the base for a whole day and night until they attracted all the mutants from the surrounding small cities."

"Yes, we succeeded. Those stupid high-ranking officials and royal family members were rescued. But when I flew back to the base, I found it was full of zombies."

"And surprisingly, no one told us where we should gather. Some said to go to Brighton, where the French Navy would be waiting to pick us up. But when I flew there, there were only a lot of discarded heavy equipment on the beach."

"Then I ended up here. The fuel in the helicopter has run out."

After listening to him, the three of them looked at each other, not knowing what to say. An entire army was sent in just to rescue those few royal family members? Shao Ming wondered if the king had two more eyes than ordinary people.

"What about you?" Wellington asked.

"We escaped all the way from Manchester by train," Shao Ming said. "We plan to go back to China all the way."

Hearing Shao Ming's words, Wellington hurriedly asked, "Will you go to Austria? Or passing through Germany would be okay too."

Lambert nodded and said, "We will pass through Germany."

"Can you take me with you?" Wellington quickly said. "I sent my wife and children to Austria as soon as the mutation started. I want to find them."

"Of course," Shao Ming couldn't be happier. A pilot, that was a highly skilled talent. "Can you fly big planes? Like passenger planes? Fixed-wing ones?"

Wellington replied awkwardly, "Uh, I can only fly a few types of helicopters. I haven't learned to fly fixed-wing planes. I can't find a plane to take you home. If I could, I would have flown to Austria already."

"Alright," Shao Ming said. "Pack your things and get back to the train."

"You've flown over London," Lambert asked. "What's the situation in London City now?"

"It depends on which way you go," Wellington said. "Most of the zombies are concentrated in the eastern urban area and the military base on the northeastern side. Didn't you notice that there aren't many zombies on the western side where we are?"

The three of them thought about it. It was indeed true that the closer they got to London on this journey, the fewer mutants there were.

After hearing Wellington's words, Lambert quickly asked, "Where's the map?"

"It's on the train."
