The two of them squeezed through the shattered glass door and began sprinting toward the tarmac. Since Feng Yusheng had only broken the lower half of the glass door, the mutated creatures that followed slammed headfirst into the upper part of the door.
To their right stood Terminal 2, while they had just exited from Terminal 1, which was connected to Terminal 3.
As they were about to head toward Terminal 2, a few mutated creatures in ground crew uniforms emerged from the garage inside Terminal 2, charging straight toward them.
"Turn back!" Shao Ming shouted. They quickly changed direction and ran toward the space between the two terminals. In front of them were only two fuel tanks and a small, locked building, with the towering airport walls beyond.
Shao Ming turned back and aimed his rifle at the creatures emerging from Terminal 2, but it took several shots before he managed to take one down. Meanwhile, more mutated creatures had emerged from Terminal 1 and were charging toward them as well.
"Run!" Feng Yusheng shouted urgently as Shao Ming was still firing.
Shao Ming quickly stowed his rifle. If only he had spent more time practicing at the shooting range, this wouldn't feel so hasty.
The airport walls were about two stories high, with the lower part just a two-meter gap, while the rest was made of chain-link fencing with gaps in it.
The two of them reached the base of the wall, and Shao Ming noticed that the concrete at the bottom was wide enough for a person to stand on.
"Can you climb the wall?" Shao Ming asked.
"Not really, but I'll try," Feng Yusheng replied, putting her pistol away.
Shao Ming crouched down, allowing Feng Yusheng to step on his shoulders to reach the chain-link fence. At his height of 185 cm, a simple jump would let him grab the wire, but Feng Yusheng, at 160 cm, couldn't quite reach it.
The mutated creatures were closing in, and they had only about thirty seconds left.
With a push, Shao Ming lifted her onto the wall.
"Go first!" Shao Ming shouted as Feng Yusheng hesitated to climb alone.
Feng Yusheng didn't say anything in return and began scrambling up the fence.
Shao Ming, though he still had time, quickly aimed his rifle and took down a few of the mutated creatures that were almost at the wall. This gave him a brief opening.
He took two quick steps forward, jumped, and grabbed the top of the fence, just as a mutated creature lunged at him. Its hand missed him by mere inches.
They both scrambled over the wall, leaving behind a dozen mutated creatures that howled in fury from the other side.
Once on the outside, a new problem arose.
Though they had been cornered by a small group of mutated creatures into the airport, that didn't mean the main horde had moved on.
The distant sound of thousands of mutated creatures surging from the city beyond the highway could be heard. The gunfire had attracted their attention, and now they were heading toward the station.
"There!" Feng Yusheng pointed toward a building not far ahead. It looked like the only place to hide.
The two of them ran toward it, supporting each other as they made their way to the nearby train station, which was connected to the airport.
Inside the station, the scene was eerily similar to the airport terminal. Piles of debris and scattered luggage were scattered across the floor. The station was large and empty, but the shops on the side were mostly wide open, leaving nowhere safe to truly hide.
They continued running deeper into the station and quickly spotted two trains on the platform. One was completely empty, but the other, much closer to them, contained several mutated creatures.
As soon as the mutated creatures inside the train saw two living humans entering the station, they became agitated. Several of them scrambled out of the broken windows and charged toward the two.
"This is bad, we're trapped!" Shao Ming thought as he slung his rifle and grabbed the baseball bat from his back.
He swung the bat, knocking down the nearest mutated creature, then quickly started calculating their next move.
There were a few creatures blocking their path, but more were emerging from the train. And with the horde rapidly closing in on the station, time was running out.
Feng Yusheng, though a woman, was fierce in her own right. After all, mutated creatures didn't care about age, gender, or strength; to them, everyone was just food.
As they fought, they moved toward the empty train. Shao Ming's baseball bat was extremely useful, sweeping across and knocking several creatures back at once.
Feng Yusheng swung her kitchen knife at an approaching mutated creature, slicing through its skull and exposing its brain. However, it didn't stop there; the creature lunged at her, ready to bite.
She suppressed the urge to scream or curse and quickly grabbed the mutated creature by the throat with her right hand, preventing it from biting her. With her left hand, she raised the pistol and fired multiple rounds into the creature's chest.
"Shoot the head!" Shao Ming shouted.
The reminder snapped Feng Yusheng into action. She raised the gun to the creature's temple and pulled the trigger. The creature's brains splattered out, but its momentum carried it forward, knocking her to the ground.
The shot rang out, and though it saved Feng Yusheng's life, the sound was the perfect beacon for the approaching horde. They began charging toward the train station.
Shao Ming turned to see several mutated creatures already rushing along the train tracks toward them.
The two of them reached the empty train and Shao Ming swung the bat at the window, shattering it. He quickly pulled Feng Yusheng inside, almost tossing her into the train.
With the creatures closing in fast, Shao Ming raised his rifle, aiming quickly and firing at the nearest creatures.
Luckily, he managed to take down two that were almost at him, giving him just enough time to climb into the train.
They ran through the train, moving away from the broken windows at the back. It wasn't a long train, so they quickly reached the front, where Shao Ming locked the door to the driver's cabin.
Shao Ming retrieved a fresh magazine, slotting it into his vest, and then reloaded his rifle.
Outside, the horde of hundreds of mutated creatures poured into the train station, violently slamming into the train. They huddled under the control panel, barely daring to move, praying the creatures wouldn't find them.
