Chapter 15 - Apex predator

The air in the chamber was thick with the stench of blood and dust. Crumbled columns and broken stone littered the ground, a grim testament to the centuries-old ruins. Erwin moved cautiously, the glow of the orb in his hand dim but warm—a constant reminder of its mysterious significance.

He clenched the orb tighter, his instincts screaming that it was more a curse than a gift.

Then the growl came.

It was low and guttural, reverberating through the chamber like distant thunder. Erwin froze, every muscle in his body tense. His eyes darted to the far end of the chamber, where the shadows seemed darker, heavier, alive.

The growl grew into a snarl, then erupted into a bone-shaking roar. From the oppressive shadows, it emerged.

The creature was massive, its form a grotesque blend of shadow and flesh. Its spines glowed faintly with a sickly green light, pulsating in rhythm with its growls. Claws, black as obsidian and sharp as razors, scraped against the ground as molten gold eyes locked onto Erwin, unblinking and predatory.

He swallowed hard, his pulse pounding in his ears.

Then the System Initiative flickered in his peripheral vision:

> Entity Identified: Apex Predator

Survival Probability: Minimal

Strategy: Adapt or Perish

"Perfect," Erwin muttered, gripping the Vesperfangs in each hand.

The creature lunged. Despite its size, it moved impossibly fast. Erwin dove to the side, narrowly avoiding the strike. The impact of its claws shattered the stone floor, sending jagged shards flying through the air.

Erwin rolled to his feet, his breath ragged. He lashed out with the Vesperfangs, aiming for the beast's flank. The daggers scraped against its armored hide, producing nothing but sparks. The shock from the blow jolted his arms, and he stumbled back.

The predator roared, unfazed.

Erwin circled it, his mind racing. His chances of surviving a direct fight were slim. He needed a weakness, and fast.

His gaze landed on the glowing spines along its back. They pulsed with energy, illuminating patches of exposed, vulnerable flesh between its armored plates.

"That's it," he thought.

The creature lunged again, both claws swiping in a deadly arc. Erwin ducked and rolled, the movement clumsy but effective. He ended up behind one of the broken columns, using it as a momentary shield.

"Think, Erwin," he whispered to himself. "You've gotten out of worse. Haven't you?"

---

Memories of a past scavenger mission surfaced—his first encounter with a high-level predator. He'd been outmatched, outgunned, but he'd survived by using his environment to his advantage.

He glanced at the cluster of still-standing columns nearby. They were unstable, precarious. Perfect.

Erwin darted out, catching the predator's attention. "Come on, ugly," he taunted, brandishing the Vesperfangs. "Let's see how smart you are."

The beast snarled, charging after him. Its massive frame smashed through the first column, then the next. Dust filled the air, obscuring its vision as it barreled forward.

Erwin moved carefully, weaving between the columns, baiting the creature closer to the most unstable one.

Three… two…

The predator slammed into the final column. The force of the impact dislodged a massive chunk of stone from above, which crashed down onto its back.

The creature roared, staggering as green ichor oozed from the wounds. Its movements slowed, the blow clearly disorienting it.

Erwin didn't hesitate. He sprinted forward, the Vesperfangs glowing faintly in his hands. He plunged them into the vulnerable flesh between its armored plates.

This time, the daggers bit deep.

The beast howled, twisting violently. Green ichor sprayed from the wounds, sizzling as it hit the ground. Erwin was thrown off its back, landing hard.

Pain shot through his body, but he forced himself to stand. His vision swam as he gripped the daggers tightly.

"It's not enough," he muttered, his breath ragged.

---

The System Initiative flickered again:

> Vesperfangs Detected

Synchronization Potential Unlocked

Proceed?

Erwin's brow furrowed. "Synchronization? What does that mean?"

The predator, recovering from its wounds, turned to face him. Its molten eyes burned brighter, and the spines along its back pulsed ominously.

Erwin didn't have time to hesitate. He focused on the Vesperfangs, willing them to activate whatever the System had hinted at.

A surge of energy coursed through him, originating from the daggers. The faint glow around the Vesperfangs intensified, spreading to envelop his hands and forearms. The daggers felt lighter, sharper, alive.

The predator roared, unleashing a burst of green energy from its spines. The air around Erwin heated, the force of the attack searing the stones. He shielded his eyes, waiting for the light to fade.

When it did, he was already moving.

The Vesperfangs guided his strikes with newfound precision. Each blow targeted a joint, a weak point, a gap in the armor. The beast roared in fury, its movements growing frantic as Erwin stayed one step ahead.

He ducked under a claw swipe and leaped onto its back, the glowing spines dangerously close.

---

With a final, decisive strike, Erwin drove the Vesperfangs deep into the predator's neck. The creature let out one last, earth-shaking roar before collapsing, its body convulsing as green ichor pooled around it.

Erwin staggered back, breathing hard. The daggers' glow dimmed as the energy faded.

The chamber fell silent, save for the faint hum of the orb in his hand.

Erwin glanced at the System Initiative as it flickered again:

> Objective Complete

Synchronization Progress: 20%

He exhaled shakily, his body trembling from exhaustion. The Apex Predator was dead, but the victory felt hollow. The System's cryptic messages hinted at more challenges ahead.

As he looked at the fallen beast, Erwin tightened his grip on the orb.
