Chapter 16 - Progress

Clarissa was visibly scared of witnessing herself killing a fellow human, as she still thought of the zombie as one, thus she shut her eyes while killing it.

However her eyes soon opened when she heard a soft beep sound in her head. Her vision was greeted with two small windows floating in front of her.

[ Slayed x1 Zombie, +10 EXP ]

[ 90 EXP remaining to level up ]

Dorian smiled proudly at her.

"You did it," he congratulated.

"T-thank you," Clarissa responded.

Her gaze shifted to the dagger in her right hand, the blood of the zombie she had just slain still staining the dark blades. A strange feeling churned in her stomach, one she couldn't quite explain.

Zion and Sampe on the other hand, had different expressions on their faces, one was surprised and the other appeared a bit solemn.

Dorian had no time to ponder why both had such reactions.

He gave a signal and proceeded to search all rooms on the first floor for zombies and sadly they found none.

They quickly proceeded to the second floor which was empty without a single zombie on sight.

It was the same for the third and fourth floor which was a little strange but Dorian still continued on to the fifth floor, he recalled noticing some movement on that floor before entering.

The three followed him cautiously up the stairs. As they neared the fifth floor, they began to hear movements and the shrieks of zombies.

"There are more than one zombies on this floor. There might be at least ten of them. Be careful," Dorian warned.

The three nodded and became even more cautious.

SHRIEK!

They hadn't completed the steps when two zombies came tumbling down the staircase towards them while shrieking loudly. Both zombies had frenzied looks on their faces as they rolled down the stairs.

The staircase was narrow, if it wasn't; the only right option would've been to give them space to roll down without coming in contact with them as it would naturally be fatal if they inflicted even the tiniest bit of injury on them.

"Watch out!"

With that option, Dorian acted right away, utilising the 30% agility boost from [Demon Agility] to ascend the staircase faster.

Once he was close enough, he applied strength through his feet and kicked the two zombies back up the staircase.

Thanks to the extra strength boost from [Demon Strength], combined with his martial arts strength boost, executing such a stunt wasn't difficult.

The two zombies flew back up like rag dolls, crashing against the walls with loud thuds.

Unfortunately, they didn't feel pain, and the clashes were mostly ineffective.

Dorian did not give both zombies a chance to get back on their feet and immediately latched on them.

He arrived in front of both zombies before they stood up, he applied strength in his right fist and punched at the neck of the closest one which had already begun to rise.

His fist connected with the neck instantly, shattering the fibers as blood erupted, bathing the wall behind it. The zombie's head fell to the ground with a small thud, followed by its body.

The other zombie shrieked, preparing to attack Dorian with its claws.

Sadly for it, Dorian's feet were already flying toward it.

He kicked its head like a football, sending it crashing and exploding into a meat paste against the wall behind it.

[ Slayed 2 Zombies, +20 EXP ]

Dorian sighed, he squatted and used the clothes on the zombie's body to wipe the gore off his hand.

"Wait... Dorian, look!"

The panicky voice of Clarissa drew Dorian's attention.

He stood up and traced his eyes in the direction she pointed out, revealing a pretty shocking scene.

"T-this is insane!" Zion remarked with a pained look on his face.

"I can't bear to watch this anymore, I wanna puke," Sampe added.

Clarissa had a pained expression on her face and was pretty stunned to speak.

On the passageway, a group of more than ten zombies could be seen fighting over and devouring the bodies of two students.

The two were still very much alive—their eyes open and mouths moving slowly. They had lost the strength to scream for help. One of the students even had his eyes fixed on them.

Dorian had been too focused on killing the two zombies earlier and almost missed the commotion.

"I've read about these scenes in novels, but it's much more horrifying to witness it in real life," Dorian muttered inaudibly.

The shrieks as the zombies fed grew even louder.

Dorian shrugged and braced himself to engage once the zombies noticed their presence.

If he went in now, he would definitely sustain injuries from fighting so many of them in limited space.

"Both of you prepare to engage with me on my signal," he told Sampe and Zion.

The two had the urge to refute but they had no choice at this moment.

Dorian took the dagger from Clarissa and asked her to wait behind.

As expected, one of the zombie spotted them and let out a shriek alerting the other zombies.

They let go of the halfly devoured bodies and began staggering at them.

SHRIEK

SHRIEK

Their crazed and hungry shrieks became even louder, they were excited with the new supply of prey.

Dorian waited for the zombie to approach closer before giving the signal and sprinting towards the zombies. Sampe and Zion followed closely behind him.

A bloody brawl soon erupted between the living and the walking dead.

Meanwhile, the other teams outside the dorm were also overwhelmed with zombies. Brandon and his group, in particular, had unfortunately drawn the attention of more than a dozen zombies.

Fortunately, they had the advantage of an open space compared to Dorian and his team.

Brandon punched the zombies indiscriminately, Craig moved swiftly and stealthily, slaying zombies with his dagger, while Milan utilized his pyro sword.

Brandon had reached level 5 about thirty minutes ago, Craig had reached level 4, and Milan was just a few EXP away from reaching level 4 as well.

They were progressing exceptionally well.

The members of the other groups had already made a substantial amount of progress.
