Chapter 8 - Under the Fair Lights

The fair buzzed with life, a kaleidoscope of vibrant lights, excited laughter, and the occasional delighted scream from roller coaster riders. The air smelled of caramel popcorn and sizzling sausages, mingling with the sugary scent of cotton candy. For Wale, it was the kind of lively chaos he hadn't realized he'd missed, a much-needed break from the grind of work and the unfamiliarity of his new surroundings.

Sophia seemed to come alive in the atmosphere, her usually composed demeanor replaced by a carefree energy. Her hair was loosely tied into a bun, stray strands framing her face as she pointed out game booths and colorful stalls. Her laugh came easily, a sound that felt contagious to those around her.

They found themselves at the ring toss booth, where Felix took on the role of self-proclaimed champion. He lined up his first toss with exaggerated precision, his tongue sticking out in mock concentration. When the ring missed by a mile, the group burst into laughter.

"You're absolutely hopeless," Sophia teased, shaking her head at Felix's theatrical groan of defeat.

"Hopeless? Watch and learn," Felix replied, puffing out his chest as he handed the next set of rings to Wale. "Come on, man. Save my honor!"

Wale hesitated for a moment, feeling the group's eyes on him. He wasn't one to enjoy the spotlight, but he didn't want to disappoint either. Stepping forward, he squared his shoulders, his focus narrowing on the brightly colored bottles lined up in neat rows.

The first toss went wide, prompting Felix to groan again, this time with dramatic despair. "Not like this, Wale!"

The second toss came closer, grazing the bottle neck, earning a collective "Ooh!" from the group. With a deep breath, Wale took his third shot, steadying his hand before releasing the ring. It sailed through the air, spinning perfectly before landing with a satisfying clink around the neck of the bottle.

"Yes!" Felix shouted, throwing his arms in the air. The group cheered, and Sophia clapped, her face lighting up with a grin.

"Not bad, Wale," she said, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "I guess you're not as serious as you seem."

Wale turned to her, feeling a sudden wave of confidence as he picked up the small plush toy he'd just won. "I had a good cheerleader," he said, handing it to her with a small smile.

Sophia took the toy, her fingers brushing his for a brief moment. "Thanks," she said softly.

Felix, ever the instigator, groaned loudly. "Oh, come on! That's flirting, isn't it?"

Wale's face turned crimson as the group dissolved into laughter. "It's not flirting," he protested, though the shy smile tugging at his lips betrayed him.

From there, the group moved toward the Ferris wheel, its bright, spinning lights beckoning against the night sky. When the operator asked for pairs, Felix wasted no time in shuffling Sophia and Wale into a cart together.

"Don't get too cozy up there!" Felix called after them, his teasing earning groans and chuckles from the group.

As the Ferris wheel rose higher, the lively noise of the fair began to fade, replaced by a peaceful quiet. Wale glanced out at the view below—twinkling lights, bustling crowds, the distant hum of cheerful chaos—but his gaze kept drifting back to Sophia.

She sat with her head tilted slightly back, her eyes tracing the skyline. The soft breeze caught the stray strands of her hair, and the glow of the fair lights danced across her face. She seemed lost in thought, her usual sharp wit replaced by a calm serenity.

"This is nice," she said suddenly, her voice breaking the silence.

Wale nodded. "It is," he said, though he wasn't really looking at the view.

Sophia caught his gaze lingering on her and raised an eyebrow. "What?"

"Nothing," he replied quickly, his ears burning as he turned his attention back to the horizon. "Just… glad you came along today."

Sophia smiled, the kind of smile that softened her features and made her eyes crinkle slightly at the corners. "Me too," she admitted. "I needed this."

By the time they rejoined the group at the base of the Ferris wheel, Felix was ready with another round of teasing. "You two were up there forever! Confess—did you plan your wedding already?"

"Shut up, Felix," Sophia said, rolling her eyes, though the faint blush on her cheeks didn't go unnoticed.

"Not everything's a rom-com, Felix," Wale added, shaking his head. Despite his words, he couldn't suppress the small smile that lingered on his lips.

The group continued to explore the fair, moving from games to food stalls to the occasional ride. The playful teasing between Wale and Sophia became a thread of humor woven through the evening, drawing them closer in ways neither of them fully realized yet.

As the night wore on, the fair became more than just a fun outing for Wale. It was a moment of connection—a rare sense of belonging in an unfamiliar place. And as he caught Sophia laughing at one of Felix's ridiculous jokes, he felt something stir in his chest, something he couldn't quite name but knew he didn't want to let go of anytime soon.
