[System is gradually restoring the host's health.] The system's response came promptly. [As for the hunger level, maybe it's not your body that needs to consume the energy from the food but rather your soul that is adjusting to the new body. Host's stamina is originally weak as Ni Ni was born prematurely with weak health.]
'Then it's really a fool's luck that she managed to see the sixth year of the apocalypse with her broken body,' Ni Ni sighed mentally feeling exhausted and didn't realize when she actually fell asleep.
She didn't know how long she slept for but she was awoken by a creepy growl which made her hair stand on ends. With a startle, Ni Ni opened her eyes and found that Ni Mei was no longer resting in her original position.
"Did she leave me behind?"
Ni Ni was yet to think further in this direction when she heard a loud voice, "Go die!" And then with a bang sound, she heard someone falling. Driven by curiosity, Ni Ni got out of her hiding place and looked outside. The scene before her made Ni Ni truly realize that she was in the apocalypse filled with unknown creatures.
Outside, Ni Mei was struggling with a couple of mutated dogs. At least, Ni Ni thought they must have been dogs but those cute creatures had now become the horror of humanity. Their size was bigger, their eyes were red, and their teeth were ready to bite into your neck.
Ni Mei shot down one of the mutated dogs but this made the other two alert toward her. They continued to dodge agilely. Ni Ni took a deep breath and looked around to see what she could find. Finally, she saw a protruding structural steel from one of the half-broken walls. She walked to it and held the structural steel. She exerted some force and easily broke off a long piece of steel.
[Host! You are so strong!]
The system seemed surprised and it made Ni Ni realize that the system really didn't know everything. As Li Hani, she was born with exceptional strength. Why else would she be targeted by that research center? Didn't they just want to study the secret of her supernatural strength?
Although after repeated use of strange drugs, her strength seemed to have been sucked out of her body, she still held on to some hope at this moment. What if she carried that strength over? Because her survival would only get more difficult if she didn't even have her original strength to help her out.
Holding the steel bar in her hand tightly, Ni Ni's eyes glowed with a murderous light. She ran out and just when one of the mutated dogs was about to pounce on Ni Mei from behind, she struck its neck. The steel bar pierced through its neck splattering disgusting black blood on Ni Mei who was taken aback by the turn of events.
She killed the only remaining mutated dog immediately and then turned to look at Ni Ni's expressionless face. She could not believe her eyes. Was this really the step-sister she grew up with? When did she start looking so indifferent and what was up with that coldness in her eyes?
Ni Mei acknowledged that their family had a shortcoming. They all doted on Ni Ni excessively. They raised a silly white rabbit who was easily deceived as she believed the world was a good place. It was their fault that even in the end times, they kept the dirtiness of this world away from Ni Ni, just wanting to keep her as innocent as ever.
But if you walk by the sea, your shoes will eventually get wet.
Although Ni Mei accepted that Ni Ni seemed to have grown up, it was still difficult for to face such Ni Ni. It made her feel uncomfortable.
"Are you planning on just standing there?" questioned Ni Ni when she noticed how Ni Mei continued to just stare at her. "Also, save the bullets. It's not like we have any extra weapons with us."
Ni Mei also agreed with her and nodded her head in agreement. "It's not safe to stay here any longer. We should start our journey."
She quickly gathered her things and once she looked at the body of the mutated dog that Ni Ni had struck to death, she stopped. She rummaged through her bag and finally took out a knife for Ni Ni, "Keep this with you." Then she also took out two guns and extra box of bullets that she gave Ni Ni as well, "This too. In case, we have to act separately, you should have something to protect yourself."
Ni Ni didn't avoid the things but took them calmly from her. Putting the things away, she asked, "Which direction should we go to?"
"To south!" said Ni Mei as she started walking in high spirits.
Ni Ni pursed her lips in hesitation before finally saying, "Sister, you're going north."
Ni Mei's steps stiffened and she awkwardly laughed, "I know. I know. I was just checking if you know."
Ni Ni did not think she was in a situation to laugh but her lips still ticked up. Who said this girl was a villain in the future? Have you seen such a cute villain? It seems this cute villain is directionally challenged but is unwilling to accept it in front of her younger sister.
Actually Ni Ni wouldn't have known which way the south was if not for the system's holographic screen that showed not only time and date but also had a compass at the right bottom of the screen.
Before moving on, Ni Mei stopped for a minute and turned her head to look toward the solemn walls of the base in the distance. There was an undeniable melancholic look in her eyes that she could hide from Ni Ni.
"Is there something or someone you can't let go off?" asked Ni Ni.
Ni Mei closed her eyes but when she opened them, the reluctance in her eyes was replaced with determination. "No. There is nothing to look back at. Our only way to survive is in our hands now. Let's survive, little sister?"
